Sorry to be late to see this. I am wondering how the hemp string packing worked on the fuel pump. I have done similar for shut off valve stem seals. I used grease on the hemp string to get a nice seal. Hemp packing like this was very common in the day.

It worked very well after I did, is I never had a problem
