it's a little complicated. you have to use software called gmpublisher to extract the .gma into the addons folder

I don't know the full details on the Gmod situation, but I know that random people occasionally like to masquerade as Nintendo and start going after nsfw artists for drawing Nintendo characters. I've seen it happen probably a good dozen times over the last 10 years where it's nothing for a while (months, maybe even a year or two) then all of a sudden artists just start getting flagged en masse for a few months until it suddenly just stops. Curiously, it's not always a broad sweep of all things Nintendo, for example, sometimes artists will only be targeted if they've drawn Rosalina, which would be a weirdly specific thing for Nintendo to target if the claims were actually by Nintendo
The fact that people are already pointing fingers at a suspect and noting that the claims include Gmod Workshop items that aren't even Nintendo property (like Sega characters) sounds all too similar to those artist DMCA attacks. Like, if this was _really_ Nintendo legitimately going after Nintendo assets in Gmod then surely they'd have the legal sense to look at the Steam Workshop _as a whole_ and go after Steam itself for being the actual entity that's hosting all these items for _all_ games on Steam and not just Gmod, right? Again, it falls into that category of being such a weirdly specific attack that it raises a lot of questions regarding its legitimacy
Obviously, Nintendo's history of hostility towards its fans doesn't help matters, but even with Garry Newman's claims of legitimacy, I think the skepticism is still warranted, tbh. I think the real takeaway here is how absurdly broken the DMCA and copyright systems continue to be that they allow people to freely issue claims fraudulently with little to no consequence, but actually disputing those claims requires you to give up personal, private information to potentially bad actors who are already intentionally abusing a system. Like, this _could_ be Nintendo or it could just be some random dude who has internet beef with Garry Newman, and it's messed up that we'll probably never know the truth either way
They don't go after steam, that's the point of DMCA, that steam is considered a neutral safe harbour for hosting these things and it's entirely between the person who uploads the things and the copyright holder. That is why DMCA is a thing and gets upheld the way it is. If steam refused to comply with takedown requests, only *then* would they be liable, but if they comply then it's just between the uploader and the copyright holder.
even funnier with targeting non-Nintendo IPs like Sega characters, the only actual Nintendo property I've seen attacked is the big plumber himself, just completely ignoring the other IPs like Pokemon or Splatoon (yuck). Plus, that's not mentioning the other numerous cases where the very real "Nintendo" striking down fan content actually just turned out to be a dude whiteknighting, often for the pettiest reason. Siivagunner a few years ago was a victim of the same thing, and even more recently (and even more petty), a guy snitched on the Yuzu emulator leading to a court settlement, all because it didn't run on Windows 7 (most sane Windows 7 user in 2024).
I do think a lot of the fan outcry might unfortunately just be copium because no one wants to see 20+ years of fan content wiped, source engine or not, but actually reading through just pokes so many holes in whatever legitimate case "Nintendo" here could have.
