- A Plasser & Theurer 09-3X Tamping Express (aka Stopfexpress) owned by "Track Australia" (now Rhomberg Rail Australia) is seen operating on the standard gauge line at Kilmore East, Victoria.
The Plasser 09-3X is a heavy duty, high speed, continuous action track tamping machine. The tamping units are mounted on a separate, self-propelled, satellite frame and are capable of tamping three sleepers at a time.
Kibri make a HO scale kit of this track machine, I'll now be able to detail mine correctly based on the 09-3X seen in this movie. Or maybe I'll take the plunge and buy the working model recently released in HO scale by Viessmann :-) .

Facinating - have always wondered how these worked. Must save so much time and labour. Love the way it has been designed so the main engine can keep moving slowly without stop-starting.
Just watching a BBC TV program now on struggling Tanzania railway which only has one of these machines for the whole railway. If it breaks, and cannot afford to repair, they will be in a whole lot of trouble.

The tamper tightly compacts the ballast, which creates a stronger base for the sleepers. This in turn allows faster and heavier trains to operate, makes the trains ride smoother, and also reduces the frequency of track maintenance. A badly formed ballast roadbed can lead to all sorts of problems such as broken rails and train derailments.

There were three Bogies from one of these in Alliance Nebraka at a Texas owned Railroad salvage company, they were trying to sell them.

why would Tamping need to be done? this one is cool, if i understand the point of Tamping.
Up until two year's ago, I was employed to operate and maintain this bad girl and its partner in crime, the DTS. Two very loud and dirty bitches that require constant attention.This machine was the first 3x built by Plasser in Australia, Im sure D.Brimble will correct me or add more info when he see's this.Both are operated and maintained by specific trades people and led by captain Ken. The DTS is a stabilizing customized weapon with two broom boxes at the rear. Happy stomping my friends
