Stretching is KILLING Your Gains (BIG MISTAKE!)

  • Stretching, when done the right way at the wrong time can absolutely be killing your gains. The issue is that many people do not know the difference between active and static stretching and the impact that doing one over the other before your workout can be having on your strength and ultimately your size gains. In this video, I’m going to show you why you should not do static stretching that you hold for any length of time before you train if you want to get maximum muscle growth and strength.
    60% off all AX programs - athleanx.com/x/467-workouts

    The issue boils down to neural efficiency. When you perform any movement, it doesn’t matter if it is something you would define as an exercise, your body has a stored pattern for accomplishing it. It does this in order to create movement efficiency. If I drop a pen on the ground and I bend to pick it up, your body doesn’t have to think about every single joint component of motion that is needed to get you down to the ground. Instead, it thinks of the “squat” movement in general and is able to instantly help you down to the floor without wasting any time.
    When you perform static stretching of muscles that are going to be trained in your workout that day, you are negatively interfering with your stored engrams or motor patterns. While increasing flexibility and the length of a muscle can be a very good thing long term, doing stretches just prior to your workout that temporarily do this can have this associated downside that winds up costing you gains from your workouts.
    The length tension relationship between muscles is something that you have that is unique to you and different from one muscle to the next. While not all length tension relationships are optimal, it is still what your body is used to and what is being used by it when calling on the stored motor pattern when performing a movement. Static or passive stretching before a workout will temporarily disrupt these patterns by affecting the actin and myosin cross bridging.
    If you were going to use this method of warming up for a workout, you would then have to spend a significant amount of time prior to starting your training just to attempt to re-integrate the movements to better match up to the engrams stored for that movement pattern or exercise. In this case, I would suggest doing two or three light sets of each of the exercises you were going to do in that workout after completing the static stretching routine. This could add at least a half an hour to your workout when you account for the stretching and the re-integration.
    There is a better way. You can instead opt to perform active or dynamic stretching for the muscles that are going to be involved in the exercises you are about to perform that day. These are movement stretches that take your joints actively into new ranges without ever holding for any length of time. The disruption to the muscles is greatly minimized and your ability to feel loose and perform at a high level is maintained.
    That said, static stretching is still vital and has a place in your routine. The best thing to do is do your stretches for the muscles that you worked that day, later on at night before you go to bed. When you sleep, your body heals itself and the muscles that were trained tend to heal a bit shorter. You can lessen this shortening effect by performing the static stretches just before laying down. When you wake up the next morning you should not only feel more loose but you will likely have less muscle soreness as well.
    If you are looking for a program that puts the science back in not just stretching but everything you do in your workout, head to athleanx.com and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System. See why today’s top athletes and performers are turning to this program in order to be in the best shape of their lives. Now you can too.

    I’m a registered yoga teacher. Some of my clients are bodybuilders, some are power lifters. This video is great, very informative, and I hope people watch it all the way through rather than just reading the title, which is TERRIBLY misleading. Warm up before, then lift, then stretching is an absolute must. There are different kinds of yoga. Yin yoga is the perfect post workout for bodybuilders; I guarantee it will actually maximize your gains by helping you heal, stay resilient, and increase myofascial space when done properly. Stretching will not kill your gains, that’s ridiculous. Stretch after you lift if you want to get bigger without hurting yourself.

      although i think thats not what you mean, the first part is a contradiction to itself. Since stretching changes the motor pattern, pre and post stretching pattern cannot be the same.
      Regarding the second part, im gonna go with the following: i dont think its necessarily bad, its just not optimal. Stretching is only good to even out muscle imbalances. For example, i know i have a imbalance in my legs (left > right). So i could stretch before my workout to weaken the neuro-muscular connection between the muscle and the stronger leg to allow for a more even distribution of load

I followed the same pattern when I'm lifting weights. I'm going to be trying a new warmup before my weight lifting sessions and see how it works for me. • @rgcunni2540
    @rgcunni2540 6 років тому +56

    This is actually a simple subject
    Warmup before
    Stretch after
    The reason people think to stretch before is so you don’t pull or tear a muscle right. It doesn’t work that way you have to warm up by doing dynamics for whatever muscles your warming up and then stretch after so your muscles don’t stay in that tightened position. If your stretch before you will see performance loss compared to just warming up. I’ve learned this through my own experience with track and field times and friends as well as years of lifting.

      @rgcunni2540 6 років тому

      magnum482 whenever I start a lifting regimen like my winter lifting or after I take a break for a while I usually start the first week just pretty much running and stretching. The same goes for running don’t stretch before warm up before and make sure you warm up good. After you get through that first week of mainly running and a little lifting and make sure you stretch really good after. Then at week two when you start lifting more keep doing a good warm up run before and then do your workout I usually do distance for runs because with time you can go at any pace and then not have to run as much with distance your always going to run your set distance after you’ve been running and stretching for a while before your workouts you can increase the distance over the weeks but your hips should start to loosen up with the running. If you do a hard leg day MAKE SURE you get a good run and stretch in the next day to keep it loose.

    • @rgcunni2540
      @rgcunni2540 6 років тому

      magnum482 also when you do your running before you do your squat try to not stretch before your squat and work on your flexibility with the squat so take The bar with no weight and go down as low as you can go for a high amount of reps . This would be for week one make sure your getting to at least 90 degrees or lower if you can it might seem easy or look stupid but your training your muscles to go that low between that and the running and flexibility you should be good after awhile of doing this regimen. It’s very hard for me to write out all the stuff and to help you through it without actually being there but I hope all this info helps and if you have any questions on any of this just reply to this post or email me and I’m willing to help

    • @guitar78ish
      @guitar78ish 6 років тому

      This is from the description below the video:
      "There is a better way.
When you wake up the next morning you should not only feel more loose but you will likely have less muscle soreness as well."

      Barry Bonds about 2 years ago I was having chronic back and hip pain, got an MRI that revealed a torn hip labrum and impingement. Doc told me I needed surgery. Did research that suggested stretching could help fix some postural problems that may have been the underlying issue so I held off on surgery to try a holistic approach. Stopped lifting for a year to focus only on flexibility/mobility and cardio. Currently pain free without surgery and in the best shape of my life. Different methods have different results for different people.

    Static stretching actually slows down the body’s sympathetic, “fight-and-flight” nervous system, which can be beneficial for decreasing blood pressure, controlling stress, helping with focus and making you feel generally good. It is NOT for pairing directly before strength training or plyometrics.

      Seems like people have distorted this information and made it out like stretching before a workout is bad which is incorrect, as long as you don't stretch immediately before lifting you'll be fine.
      Static stretch > Foam Roll > Dynamic Stretch > Dynamic Warmup > "Throw away sets, or "warm up" sets" > working sets > max sets (optional) > Dynamic Stretch (cool down) > Static Stretch > post work out meal > rest = GAINZ.

    I agree that long holds through static stretching will inhibit performance. Essentially you are elongating the muscle and temporarily deadening your nervous systems respond to a potentially tonic (overactive) muscle. However, if for example my tight hip flexors stop me from correctly performing a movement such as a squat, you bet I am going to stretch them out before I squat. I'll take the potential decrease in performance and power, for the ability to get into the proper position with structural integrity.

      depends on the stretch. you should stretch daily multiple times regardless just not heavy static stuff before training n shit. that being said i also cycle and i think thats one of the few exceptions to the rule. i do a full palms to the floor n hold before/during and after i bike. for me its one of them things where the rest of my body just flows better from the get go vs not stretching before i ride. i just convert that temp transition of looseness into more horsepower as i warmup and settle my cadence after a mile or 2. never had an issue yet and i definitely feel better when i stretch mid session as well.

  • @daribro2151

    READ THE VIDEO DESCRIPTION!
    The point here is the difference between STATIC and DYNAMIC stretching. A proper warmup should consist of light exercises and dynamic stretches. This should help you loosen up your muscles. But if you feel tight before your workout, you should ask yourself why that's the case in the first place. I think the best way to fix this, is to do proper static stretching after every workout. Unfortunately, I see quite a few people in the gym not putting enough emphasis into their stretching or not stretching at all because they're probably exhausted after their workout and just want to go home. I don't like to do it either. I remember when I started working out, my muscles were pretty stiff, and I wasn't taking stretching too seriously, so I felt like it wasn't really helping me, and stretching before my workouts felt more like a "quick fix". But then I started to do some serious static stretching after every workout for maybe 10-20 minutes, holding every stretch for a minimum of 30 seconds and up to 60 seconds. After a short time I could feel significant improvement of my flexibility. Today I'm almost like a fucking contortionist lol. Always perform static stretches when your muscles are warm!

    Yes! I’m a firm believer in listening to your body and I always seemed to be getting crappy workouts with stretching before the workout, I switched to extended warmups before and I do my stretch routines AFTER and the difference is huge. Still maintaining my flexibility and I go so much harder in my workout. I appreciate this unpopular truth

    Thank you Jeff! I see this all the time at the gym (guys doing MAJOR stretching prior to tough lifts like squats). Hard to believe in 2017 almost 2018 we still have these myths.... Like spot reducing...but I digress.

    After explaining everything that your body processes during a squat I was lowkey impressed for a second when he picked that marker up.

    If you’re going to stretch before a workout you should do dynamic stretches, using the full range of motion, instead of a static stretch.

    Jeff can you do a video series on the right way to do active stretching for each body parts before exercising. I currently do the flexibility stretches that you taught.

      Just do whatever the main movement is with just the barbell for 5-10 reps. Repeat until you feel warm, then slowly work up to your working weight.

    Very true. I’m old school, I’ve been training with weights for many years and I’m now well into my 50’s and have no intention of stopping. We never used to to do more than a few free standing squats and some light dynamic stretching back in the day, because that’s what you did back then and no one thought anything more of it. But recently I decided that wanted to get more flexible so I included some static stretching several times per week including before a squat session. Big mistake. I started to get all kinds of problems with injuries and my strength seemed to wane. My instincts told me that the stretching just prior to the workout was not a good idea so I ceased and now all is going well again. I still stretch but that is on non workout days.
    So yes I completely agree with all you say Jeff, great advice and great video.
