Thank you! I just changed the cylinder heads on my wife’s 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with the 5.7 Hemi. In this forty minute video you showed everything that needs to be done. Not only was this video easy to follow, but there were times I would wonder if I could complete this. I’d watch this video and my confidence would go up again. Until now, I’ve done almost everything else under the hood, but this was the deepest I’ve gone. All the garages quoted us $10k-$12k to get a new engine. For the warranty on a new or a remanufactured engine you need to also replace the cooling system as well as buy a new intake manifold. Thank you again.
Did this on my 05 Magnum almost 2 years ago. I used a head rebuilder out in Simi Valley and they included new head bolts, gaskets and a great warranty. The heads looked like brand new. Few pointers I’d add to your already excellent tutorial: 1)Replace those little O rings on the water pump hard lines. It’s EZ to do while everything is apart. 2) Check your pushrods to make sure they haven’t been bent by the force of the valves impacted the pistons. Again very easy while it’s torn down. 3) Getting the air pockets out of the cooling system is a pain. I’ve found the best way is to use one of special funnels that allows the air bubble to rise out of the reservoir. Don’t forget to use the bleeder port on the water pump when you add the coolant too. 4) Check your heater hoses! With these cars getting up there in age it’s probably time to replace them to avoid another overheating issue down the road...,don’t ask how I know this.... 5) Consider replacing the motor mounts for the same reason. 6) My new water pump was purchased on eBay from a dealership and had a metal impeller. Mopar! 7) I used a engine support bar from Harbor Freight instead of a cherry picker so that’s another alternative. Great job, thanks for taking the time to document all your hard work 👍
Great video. This is to all you who ask way too many questions that are in the video, you shouldn't be watching this because if your attention span is so short that you missed parts of this great video, you certainly don't need to be working on an engine, especially this generation Hemi.
I agree to some extent. I did have to keep going back because this video is so information packed. Watching so carefully, I actually missed some bits of information he would be talking about. One thing I really appreciate is how he goes over all the fasteners, bolts, and connectors as he’s pointing out procedures. Some connectors are not always obvious, and when they are frozen in place it’s easy to doubt you’re doing it correctly. If you’re doing it wrong and you force something you’ll break it.
Excellent video, I have a 2007 Durango with the 5.7 and over 170k miles. Nothing major yet. Thanks for taking us along on the repair, you made it look easy and simple.
Excellent job guys. I'm retired now but spent 45 years in dealer service depts and found your video spot on! I'm dreading doing my 5.7 Grand Cherokee Limited with 137 K, but better to change heads before the seats drop. Highly recommend turning off MDS since some research says it might be involved, although it seems yours was on non MDS cylinders. Great job, once again!

Just curious, why would you still decide to buy a truck with this engine knowing it will potentially drop the valve seat and give you this headache? Why didn't you consider other trucks that are more reliable like a Toyota Tundra or even Nissan Titan?
Great instructional video. Detailed and easy to understand. I am surprised that there was no visible damage to the cylinder wall with all those valve seat pieces bouncing around in there. You're lucky you didn't need to do a cylinder bore out.
I couldn’t begin to thank you enough. I was contemplating how to double check my stroker build from my local performance shop and a camera through the spark plug hole is a great start. Thank thank you.

Very informative video. A couple of thoughts. The rear cooling passages are really caked. Same thing with the block water passages before you scrape the carbon off the pistons? Why are they this way when all the others look clean?
Looking to do this on My 2007 Chrysler 300C, 64,000 miles...same piston rear passager side...no compression, plugs covered with metal......Are you saying $1,000 dollars in parts ?
Thank you for such a thorough video! I have oil on my number 7 spark plug and it misfired. I am wondering if this is part of the issue that caused it, or at least now I know how to take it apart to get a better look and find the problem.
@@jsteez7656 Still diagnosing the problem. Luckily I have another vehicle to drive in the meantime, so I'm not moving too quickly on the Hemi, but I will update when I have more info. I think my next step is a leak down test.
Great video. If I'm not mistaken that's a 3rd gen hemi so almost everything should be pretty similar amongst all 5.7. PS they send me to right gaskets for my Subaru. Had to reorder too. Lol.
My 2011 Ram HEMI 5.7 at 93k miles broke a valve spring and my #3 intake valve hit the piston. Dealer wanted $13k to replace the engine. Will do what you did to save money. Thanks for the video. My only feedback is why didn't you replace the lifters and cam while you were there? They cause the same failure modes.
Good morning & friendly nice greetings from Bavaria ( Allgäu, Germany ) & me👋🍀🙂 Nice Video about the issue of lose valve seat rings & a great repair Guide, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this 👍🙂 Oh mate, what a bad issue and damage of your HEMI in your nice Dodge Magnum, i'm very sorry about that, a sad thing....😓 And i'm so AFRAID about that my HEMI could also become this damage, especially it's the same 5.7 Eagle 3rd Gen. HEMI in the 2006 Charger R/T Daytona what i've bought 2 months ago with 132.000 or even 222.000km ob the clock. I've found it via Internet at North Carolina and imported it and it arrived me ~3 weeks ago. And the Car looks great, especially for its age of 14 years and the mileage. I see the car was not used a long time, and the seller gave it away to the shippers without filling up the motoroil. And so the HEMI had Not enough oil and runned that time when it was in the way, in the vessel. Motoroil It was under the "Safe marking" at the oil Stick. I gave ~1.5 liters of Motoroil in it and then it artived the middle of the Safe marking. What a big shame for the seller i think! That's really really Bad i think. BUT, the HEMI runns quiet and very nice, so i really hope the low Motoroil didn't made any damage. It's a beautiful Motor, i love it! But now i've found some Videos of the issue of the loosing valve seat rings. And also about the HEMI Roller lifters issue what is also called the "HEMI tick" & now im very very afraid about that.... Especially because it's a 2006, it's a 3rd Gen. Eagle HEMI, with the mileage when these engine failures could be possible. What do you think i should do now? And could you Tell me about, what is the most often worn part at the belt drive for the wather Pump, AC and steering pump? Because i listen a little "queeking" when the Engine is running what comes from this belt drive. For your knowledge i'll be very thankful. I Hope my english is good enough that you'll understand me right, but i think so😅...i'm a real Motor Enthusiast, and i Spend more than 17 years with Alfa Romeo Cars in Motorsport, upgradeing, repairing, working on it and so i know every Bolt & screw of these very nice Cars and engines. But American Cars, especially Classics, but even also these modern MOPARS with HEMI's are a big love of me /since i was Young, US classic cars are my big Love. And this 2006 Dodge Charger RT Daytona, a Top Banana is a big Dream of me and to own one now Made a big Dream true. And at this time i'm fixing different things on it before i could Drive it. And now, with the knowledge of these possible Bad issues im really afraid about that my new old HEMI Dream could get that.... I wish you a great day and i hope for a answer of you, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, Bye👋🍀🍀🍀🙂
The cooling fans don’t exactly have to go up through the bottom you just gotta remove the upper radiator hose and turn the fans on. It’s on its side it’ll come right up.
I have a question, you couldn't install the Oil pan with the gasket already on it. Or is there a specific reason why you had drop the oil pan gasket separately through the front to sit on top of the oil pan ?.
Awesome video. Thanks for all yhe great information. Mine is gonna be a pain because its in a grand cherokee and its 4x4 so everything from the bottom will be tough. I may end up pulling the engine. But I'll see how it goes once i get into it.
Pistons install MUCH easier when you use a little lube. At my shop, we use Schaeffers Moly EP in an oil can and use that as assembly lube for everything but the cam.
Awesome video!! Explained everything in detail and some good time saving tips. Definitely giving me the confidence to try and do this myself, thank you:)
Hey this video is real helpful,I live out Philly it’s so hard to find the parts I need to do this, because the dealer straight up told me I need an engine which they want $8000 for. I’m only 22 & I refuse to let my 06 charger 5.7 go to waste
Get rid of it dude,it's a POS trust me..I know they look nice, but what counts is whats under the hood and that 5.7 is a POS..25 years in the engine parts business..
rockauto.com for parts I know one guy who has over 360,000 miles on his 05 Hemi Magnum. Mine I bought new only has 113,000 on it and I ain't getting rid of it. I love that car.
5.7L is definitely not a POS engine if you take care of it. The one part that cuts half the engine value is the damn cheap ass lifters they put in them. If not for those, with regular oil change these engines would be nearly unstoppable
I had to have my rear main seal replaced under warranty. Apparently they never fail, according to forums. Still don’t know why mine did, and it was sudden and poured oil out with anything more than about 1500 RPMs (oil pressure). One very important thing- The people in the know ALL stress the importance of using the Mopar sealant on the oil pan gasket. Crucial.
Wow! Since you mentioned getting two left head gaskets in your gasket set, I decided to go look at the one I just got in the mail from rockauto today. It has two left head gaskets. And the cylinder size on the gasket is larger.
Great video. I know I bought an 06 charge police editio. The valve seats fell out and destroyed the engine. So now I'm looking for a used engine and redoing the heads
Having to pull the heads to get to the lifters makes a cam/lifter swap a pain. Not like the old V8s. But this would have been a great time, if you are wanting more cam, to do it. Looks lucky that piston didn't damage the cylinder wall beyond honing.
Having that many seats dropping at the same time it sounds like it over heated. Change exhaust studs and replace the valve springs. There are updated one's.
You make this look so easy though I know it takes time and broken knuckles. I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi with 177,300 miles. It overheated beginning of December and now I have white smoke coming out of the exhaust. It runs very rough and I'm afraid to use it for fear I would damage more. I want to get it repaired. How much did it cost you to repair the Magnum including parts & labor? Also, how long did it take to repair? I would love to make the repairs myself but don't have all the necessary tools. Wish I could find a mechanic that would be willing to help me repair.
What caused the damage to the head? The valves looked fine. I have same issue but I found little pieces of metal in exhaust before the cat. The debree cannot be identified and the valves on mine look fine as well. My engine isn't even a year old on a swap I think someone left something in the intake or something. But what caused you're damage.?
Watch that upper radiator hose, folks. It's too short! The torque of revving the engine will rip the hose from the radiator. Happens more readily when engine mounts are torn.
Sir !! You are a Hemi hero! I am driving a 2005 Dodge Magnum with almost 300,000 km on it. I have to say your video was very informative and I could tell the level of professionalism was at the top. Thank you for making this video. I only have one question my Magnum has slight vacuum leak. I can’t find where it is. So I want to go ahead and take that air intake off. Do you attach the intake gaskets to the intake or to the Block? Thank you so much
hey man good ass job explain this. i wish you made this video 5 years ago my valves dropped on my RT 05 magnum. i have a 07 now and IF that happens again....im coming back to this video for reference.
Same thing happened to my 300c but my cylinder walls got scratched up did you have to get yours fixed or were they not too bad? Also where did you buy your heads ? And would it be worth it to fix the stock heads if they are in good condition( removing valve seat and getting new valves?
How much time is required to remove the passenger side Head for inspection ONLY? I was charged 4 hours labor and believe it was book time for a removal and installation as a gasket replacement might require. Any thoughts??
What was they symptoms? I have the 07 6.1L with 83k miles. The car has a small evap leak and misfire in cylinder 2. I changed the plugs swapped the coil/injector from 2 to 4 and vacuum pressure test nothing. It idles rough only at low rpms are at a stop. It’s not making no crazy sounds are smoke, so I’m lost.
Great video lots of good information well done sir. By chance do you remember what size the piston bore was for over 200k miles? oversize piston or stock?
Good first vid of the job on this engines. But, you didn't even show what the failed Valve seats look like from the top.. ?? Not everyone knows or have seen it, that's part of what I came for. Plus the Cylinder heads looks brand new, are they New or same old ones, But Cleaned?
So is the main cause of this failure do to excessive heat, or more poor quality parts, I have over 250000 miles on my 5.7 06 Ram and so far iv been lucky I suppose..in other words, is there a rhyme or reason it would happen..
It seems overheating is a super common factor in valve seat failure. It was a bad design but I believe if I hadn't overheated it would've been fine for much longer
Bad head machine work or not enough valve seat interference to maintain seat pressure depending on the way you look at it. Any amount of extra heat in the system just helps loosen up the valve seats. That’s why I like the 180F thermostat for desert cars.
Great video very helpful! 👍 Just curious, given the mileage, did you have good compression in the other cylinders? Also what brand of lifters did you use? Seems like OEMs have a history of failing on these engines. Thanks!
My brother had to do a 300C hete in Australia he pulled the engine out as no one could help as it was a favor (family) it was easier for him to modify one of his engine cranes to yank the motor out. Btw he's got a bad back thats why it was done a bench. You say that engine has done over 200000 mile. The engine he did had apparently 110000 kms and all vave seats had pulled away ! Ya think previos owner might have given it a birthday? As in changed the instrument cluster as it looked ridiculous. Also 10 mm clearance either side of rocker covers. Its running sweet now tho! Is it common with those engines and valve seats doing that as all the valve seats were stuffed? I didnt believe him until he showed me on a pic he sent. Any reply appreciated thanks from Australia 😊
The valve seats drop because the heads had manufacturing defects. I have always suspected Mercedes Benz is the one to blame for this since the engine was initially developed when Mopar was under their control and they had been funneling money out of the Mopar brands and then leaving the dying corpse for the American government to save. I have seen valve seats drop at a wide range of mileages so your 110k kms is possible. Causes of this issue range widely but they all stem from the heads being faulty from new. It was always just a matter of time for most people…..
So as long as you don't overheat the engine, you shouldn't worry about them dropping out? I've heard of these engines going 300K or more without issue so i was wondering about that since i'm looking at buying a friends 2004 Durango Hemi. I want to know what i might be getting myself into.
I think that is the main issue, people run them REALLY hard and hot, then just shut them off no cooldown time, different metals and then they just drop. I think most of it is them overheating. my 06 Daytona Charger with the Hemi has 130k miles no problems
Same Problem on my 2008 Aspen BUT.... 1/4 -1/3 of the rear of the engine is completely covered by the dashboard! Same thing, plastic rad broke on the freeway, b4 I could stop it dropped valve seats.... Wish me luck i am about to start on it
1:29 does he mean valve seat instead of guide? I’m not correcting for criticism or anything. I have a 5.7 hemi Ram and am just trying to understand the issues with them. Is this a problem on the 2019 5.7 Rams or was this problem addressed by then? I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy!
Thank you!

what is the issue with plastic impellers? I've seen plastic impellers used on heavy duty diesel engines without problems. is it a creep issue?
Just replaced water pump on 05 and no bleeder hole in new pump.
Now heater water has air in it.

That's the hemi tick. You should watch some videos on it. You need a bigger oil pump
Very informative video. A couple of thoughts. The rear cooling passages are really caked. Same thing with the block water passages before you scrape the carbon off the pistons? Why are they this way when all the others look clean?
AWESOME video Sir! Excellent narration and some very good tips. Count me in as a subscriber!
Looking to do this on My 2007 Chrysler 300C, 64,000 miles...same piston rear passager side...no compression, plugs covered with metal......Are you saying $1,000 dollars in parts ?
extremely informative, very good
Thank you for such a thorough video! I have oil on my number 7 spark plug and it misfired. I am wondering if this is part of the issue that caused it, or at least now I know how to take it apart to get a better look and find the problem.
Ever figure it out?
@@jsteez7656 Still diagnosing the problem. Luckily I have another vehicle to drive in the meantime, so I'm not moving too quickly on the Hemi, but I will update when I have more info. I think my next step is a leak down test.
Great video. If I'm not mistaken that's a 3rd gen hemi so almost everything should be pretty similar amongst all 5.7.
PS they send me to right gaskets for my Subaru. Had to reorder too. Lol.
Great job with this video. Good explanation and great video footage to show the issues and how you fixed them.
Excellent video. Thinking of doing this proactively in my 2005 300C
Great video! I would’ve liked to have seen you go further into the engine with the cam and lifters, timing chain and guides
Good morning & friendly nice greetings from Bavaria ( Allgäu, Germany ) & me👋🍀🙂
Nice Video about the issue of lose valve seat rings & a great repair Guide, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this 👍🙂
Oh mate, what a bad issue and damage of your HEMI in your nice Dodge Magnum, i'm very sorry about that, a sad thing....😓
And i'm so AFRAID about that my HEMI could also become this damage, especially it's the same 5.7 Eagle 3rd Gen.
Just throwing it out there it's a tight squeeze but the fans will come out the top, I did it when my radiator cracked on my charger.
I’ve done it both ways but it definitely works best with the least issues to pull it from the bottom
The cooling fans don’t exactly have to go up through the bottom you just gotta remove the upper radiator hose and turn the fans on. It’s on its side it’ll come right up.
I'm halfway through the exact process. I'm doing all the pistons and rings since I'm in there. They're che as a set.
Nice job and camera work - I wish I could give it two thumbs up. Well done.
Have you ever had problems with your PCM and had to replace it with an aftermarket one?
I have a question, you couldn't install the Oil pan with the gasket already on it. Or is there a specific reason why you had drop the oil pan gasket separately through the front to sit on top of the oil pan ?.
I was wondering also lol
Awesome video. Thanks for all yhe great information. Mine is gonna be a pain because its in a grand cherokee and its 4x4 so everything from the bottom will be tough. I may end up pulling the engine. But I'll see how it goes once i get into it.
Pistons install MUCH easier when you use a little lube. At my shop, we use Schaeffers Moly EP in an oil can and use that as assembly lube for everything but the cam.
Awesome video!! Explained everything in detail and some good time saving tips. Definitely giving me the confidence to try and do this myself, thank you:)
That was a lot of work. Great info, and thanks for sharing.
Nice video, just wondering why didnt you change the coolant tank because it looks very rusty
Great video! 👌👌👌 Question after 3 years those heads are still in good shape???
At the same job I need done what you just did on that Magnum
It's a Mopar thing... I've seen it many times... Usually from overheating. I suggest staking your valve seats so they don't fall out.
This is actually a common thing with Dodge, the valve seat issue happens on their 2.7,3.7,4.7,and 5.7 models..
@@QBN37 yup, I agree. I seen and fixed it on a Jeep. Best thing to do is stake the valve seats when possible.
@@StealthyWolfDaddyWerewolf how do you do that
Hey this video is real helpful,I live out Philly it’s so hard to find the parts I need to do this, because the dealer straight up told me I need an engine which they want $8000 for. I’m only 22 & I refuse to let my 06 charger 5.7 go to waste
Get rid of it dude,it's a POS trust me..I know they look nice, but what counts is whats under the hood and that 5.7 is a POS..25 years in the engine parts business..
rockauto.com for parts
I know one guy who has over 360,000 miles on his 05 Hemi Magnum.
Informative video, I am wondering why not pull the engine
Great video! Thanks! I am in the process of doing this job on my 05 Magnum.
I hope you learned to pull the fuel pump fuse before cranking to build oil pressure instead of unplugging all the coil packs?
What was the original symptoms on the engine before you start looking into the cylinder heads?
How is the engine holding ? Im looking into having my mechanic do the same thing valve seat dropped doing minor damage to pistons
Need to obtain heads...... It's a 2006 charger 5.7. so what I want to do is find 5.7 heads 2009 or newer? Less chance of a valve seat dropping?
Great video. I know I bought an 06 charge police editio. The valve seats fell out and destroyed the engine. So now I'm looking for a used engine and redoing the heads
Awesome video....great job on getting your hemi magnum back on the road again....
Awesome video, very informative. Thanks for sharing this, going to use your time saving tips when I do my aftermarket head install
Having to pull the heads to get to the lifters makes a cam/lifter swap a pain. Not like the old V8s. But this would have been a great time, if you are wanting more cam, to do it. Looks lucky that piston didn't damage the cylinder wall beyond honing.
Lol pulls up the purge valve "it's part of the emissions system or something like that" idk why I found that funny
Having that many seats dropping at the same time it sounds like it over heated. Change exhaust studs and replace the valve springs. There are updated one's.
he says that
You make this look so easy though I know it takes time and broken knuckles.
Thank you so much
There a rubber gaskets for each intake port. They are placed on the intake then you put the intake on the engine.
As already mentioned, excellent step by step build!
Good video but was wondering how much harder it would have been to pull the engine. seems like you were pretty close to pulling it anyway.
Great job, do you recall what size cylinder hone is needed? I bought the scope too to see why my daytona wouldn't start and this happened to me also.
hey man good ass job explain this. i wish you made this video 5 years ago my valves dropped on my RT 05 magnum. i have a 07 now and IF that happens again....im coming back to this video for reference.
Same thing happened to my 300c but my cylinder walls got scratched up did you have to get yours fixed or were they not too bad?
Also where did you buy your heads ? And would it be worth it to fix the stock heads if they are in good condition( removing valve seat and getting new valves?
Outstanding video. Thank you!
Excellent demo 👌
Great video lots of good information well done sir. By chance do you remember what size the piston bore was for over 200k miles? oversize piston or stock?
Great job, would have been good if you show the torque specs for the bolts,
What a great and informative video!
Excellent detailed video. Learned a lot. Thank you.
Mine dropped without overheating. In fact it happened upon startup
Great job i watched it completely and i enjoy to see it
Great video very helpful! 👍 Just curious, given the mileage, did you have good compression in the other cylinders? Also what brand of lifters did you use? Seems like OEMs have a history of failing on these engines. Thanks!
Thanks for the vid you should look in to swapping to 09 5.7 heads they fixed this problem on them or even the 6.1 heads both will bolt up
My brother had to do a 300C hete in Australia he pulled the engine out as no one could help as it was a favor (family) it was easier for him to modify one of his engine cranes to yank the motor out.
Wish me luck i am about to start on it
I wish you the best and hope your block is usable.
Now that's how ya do a video!
Seat not guide, yes.
I noticed you weren't running a catch can. So what did the backside of the intake valves look like? Thanks!
Is it easier to pull an engine when you working on a 5 7 and a Truck a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500
Can you fix mine
Very informative video. Great job.
How is the car running now sincerely you guys didn’t hone the engine block?
