It sucks but I rather having a game not being released in my country than having it changed. I remember Calisto Protocol was banned in Japan because they refused to censor the game. Things like that will always happen, and I respect the studios that stick to their vision and keep the game unchanged despite the risk of losing some audiences.

It's the opposite of brave though, they won't release it because they don't want to get clapped by the media, the issue is not explicit violence like it was in Japan, it's because it could be considered offensive since it revolves around historical events, not talking about a past event doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Reminds me of how many episodes of Pokémon were banned in Korea, but unlike the episodes banned in America that weren’t really integral to the plot (minus Safari Zone), the Korean banned episodes are full of major plot points, like Ash getting badges or Pokémon evolving.
Also, Raidou was removed from the Chinese and Korean versions of SMT3HD due to historical sensitivity. However, due to fan outcry from the former, they made him free DLC there for about 2 weeks before becoming standard paid DLC. Korea did not get this. Have Korean gamers say if they want Rise of the Ronin. If they say no, that’s all she wrote.

SK edits of Anime are more aggressive on removing every element of Japanese culture from the series in addition to nudity. Sailor Moon was Hit hard with the censorship they cut around Rei living at the shinto Temple. and every nude moment was airbrushed out.

I'm from Argentina, and a game featuring the Falkland's war might've seen as sensitive towards us, but it's freaking fiction and a damn war setting. Of course there is going to be opposing parties, and each might see the other one as the bad guys. Also, it's fiction, even if it's a portrayal of real history events.
Imagine being an adult, and being told that you cannot play a game, see a movie, nor read a book because it might upset you.

There's been other precedents as well. Spec Ops: The Line is banned in the United Arab Emirates because the game is set in a fictional alternate version of Dubai, and the UAE government was incensed at the idea of their crown jewel metropolis being depicted as a dystopia. The people who ban a game or prevent its release usually aren't the ones playing them.

As a Korean who really delves into history though I can understand Sony's sentiment especially given our strained history with Japan, but ultimately art/games must be allowed to express themselves fully. If anything it will provide greater insight into why those movements of conquering happened in the first place, and what we can do to prevent them. Watching the BTS the director clearly states that it was a different historical period, and focuses not on the part conquest/war (MC was influencial of a right wing movement to invade/punish Korea for disrespecting/illegitimizing their emperor) but rather sheds light on the part that appeals to him as a creator which is the demand to take action with the central theme of revolution showcased throughout multiple interviews/game trailers. Feel like too many people are treating this game like its legimitizing jingoistic propaganda. At least Sony allowed Korean subtitles in other versions of the game thats a very nice touch not to throw out that hard work.

Your words are absolutely true but this game is banned by the national law of Korea. Publisher decided not to launch this game in Korea by themselves. They're selling games, not making controvercies and nuisances. The problem is simple. And let me clarify this problem more, I haven't seen any kind of games the developers' direct worshiping on Hitler-like historic figure yet.

    • @Revolthell
      @Revolthell 4 місяці тому +7

@@selohcin Maybe its typical for westerners to think us Koreans are just one giant hivemind with no individual opinion because of what you perceive from our societal norms. But I can play Sengoku Basara, while knowing the irl Totoyomi Hideyoshi lead the Invasions into my country as their main goal was to fight against China. Just so you know the Korean intellectual elite also oppressed (and even today still is in many ways) the common people by not just through classist means but by also refusing to deploy what we now call Hangul that would have allowed great educational prosperity instead of Hancha which me oversimplyfing is basically Korean Kanji, setting back our culture hundreds of years.
Ive heard that assertion time and time again, the main reason you dont usually hear from people like myself is because the government and institutions are happy to use Japans whitewashing of their history as camoflague and distraction for their own bullshit. Then normal citizens will just use downloaded talking points, opinions to deflect and silence people like myself. Going back to the creator of this game, they are not trying to glorify the aspect of the MCs views on invading Korea or anything, but more about taking action to slowly build a revolution. I personally feel that this kind of censorship is actually the most dangerous despite its sincerity, because it creates a cultural disconnect between us and the rest of the world in how we consume media. Leading to a disconnect of perspective and ultimately a smaller less meangingful voice on the international stage.
Just comes down to personal belief, that individuals should decide what art they wish to consume, not government, nor laws nor even culture as censorship of the individual expression ultimately leads to a poorer understanding of different cultures and more unnecessary conflicts in all contexts.
I want to know why Team Ninja picked this man, this period, and why the director feels he is like Socrates. Putting our heads in the sand crying racism when the devs are NOT coming from a place of hate isnt going to help anyone.
Sorry for the long comment, but felt it was needed to properly explain where Im coming from.

Team Ninja would be hypocrites if so. See, a popular fighting game series expanded to include a goofy side series around volleyball. Now, normally Sweet Baby would have bitch fits and aneurisms at shapely ladies in bikinis lounging on inflatables but, there was one inclusion that the team knew would be a problem. Enter Dead or Alive 5 debutant; Marie Rose. Marie was voted by players for the volleyball which is creepy to begin with. Team Ninja, knowing the lewd content such as poledancing, the poses the women perform... was grand for asian audiences since 12 was once the legal age of consent. However the majority of western countries consider anyone under 18, 21 in the US iirc- as a minor and any implied adult behaviour is a criminal offense as it is seen as child p.
Knowing Marie, like Kasumi and Ayane before her; was barely 16, 17 in some localisations- was a minor and the backlash they would receive.... made sure to only release Dead or Alive: Extreme Beach Volleyball 3 - Fortune in Asia. Only asian players have access to it online so only they can access the in-game store. Western fans had to buy the disc to play it outside of Asia.
So it comes as no surprise that Team Ninja have again, withdrawn a game from a local area to avoid a potential backlash

I'm a Korean. So here's your interpretation of the situation. So here's what this game means in Korea. It's hard to accept normally a game producer saying that he respects someone who preaches, which means, "Nazi is good for taking over Europe and America," that Japan still has that imperialistic mindset, and even Sony, which approved it to be released as a SIE game, has that idea. This is very serious. This game has to be canceled even in other countries.

    Koreans want games.
    But Sony gave up.
They thought that some of the elements in the game would make Koreans uncomfortable.
But Koreans are not simply stupid people who feel uncomfortable because Japan made the game.
I hope there's no problem with the elements in the game. If there's a factor that causes inconvenience to Koreans that even Sony can admit,
In other words, if history distortion, imperialism, the glorification of shoin...
That will be an uncomfortable factor for Koreans.

Reminder: Japan brutally invaded Korea, committed several war crimes and to this day continues to deny it. Then when one game decided to have them as the bad guy in a war that everyone still knows about and where they were the clear bad guys, they ban it in their country.
It's a shame Korea is banning propaganda from a man who never viewed them as humans. Why can't they get along? Japan has apologized like 0 times already. How much more do you want them to apologize?

Korean nationalists keep spreading this lie but the first google result says that Japan apologized in 1960 and many times after it.

@@RyuSaarvado you even know what these guys apologized for? For most people, you can't apologize for something and then deny it ever happened.

      "0 times apologize"
Japanese gov : Actually do apologizes pays a lot.
*Breaking promises made by the previous government
      "That's won't work."
      Logic.

Understandable. The same reason I don't play yakuza games. Romanticizing scumbags or in this case a terrible period of history is not cool.
