As someone who likes to bake breads, i can confirm that it's simply impossible to not take some pieces of the dough to taste before baking. I'm pretty sure this is what Steve does to the pies.

I feel like it would be a unique game mechanic to have the pumpkin pie act like a cake in the inventory. Every time you eat it a slice gets taken out giving you like 6 food items in 1.
That would be insanely practical to carry around

It would definitely become the new superfood simply for the convenience.
The only issue would be the sprite showing how many slices are left, because all of the pies in a stack would show as having slices missing in the inventory. Mojang would absolutely make the pumpkin pie unstackable if that were the case, throwing the pumpkin pie straight back into obsolescence. Such is the way of the mojang.
or they could make it that nbt changes for each missing piece so there for 7 piece cake will stack with 7 piece cakes but 3 piece cake only with 3 piece cakes i belive some mods did something similar@@Zappr

i think herobrine is the cause of the bite out of the pumpkin pie, personally. he must eat one slice every time steve makes a new one. it's never been solved since the beginning. (and steve eats the WHOLE pie otherwise, so... there's some weird stuff going on there already.)

Part of the pumpkin pie is used to repair the crafting table. Same goes for any crafting recipe which seems to give less than put in.

Out of sheer curiosity, why is Minecraft pie a single food item instead of a placable food block? It seems like a pumpkin pie would have been implented to compliment the cake in the first place.
By wool logic (which is reversing wool to string), a block of bamboo is 9 bamboo, whereas 2 bamboo is 1 stick, which means each bamboo block is only 4.5 sticks.
3 bamboo blocks × 4.5 sticks/bamboo block = 13.5 sticks
1 bow = 3 string + 3 sticks
13.5 sticks + 12 string = 4 bows + 1.5 stick
It’s not about the size of the arrow, it’s about how you use it.

Now, it would look suspicious to the player if suddenly there were two pumpkin pie sprites, and the player is not supposed to realize that Steve is actually a conscious being with his own cravings. Therefore he now forces himself to eat a piece of the pie every time one is crafted, no matter how full he is, even eating ones made by the crafter right before your eyes, merely to protect his identity.

Steve always takes a slice of Pumpkin Pie when he crafts one for the same reason soup chefs always try a bite of the soup they just made before serving (Steve probably does the same with Mushroom, Beetroot and Rabbit soups too, though it's not as obvious due to the contents of the bowl being mostly fluid).
Making 9 pumpkin pies should yield you with an extra one because you are putting all the lost pieces together into another pie.
