Critic Ernest Fleischmann said (decades ago now) on the radio that when George Szell passed away, the Cleveland Orchestra overwhelmingly wanted István Kertész to be their new principal conductor. Powers-that-be overrode them, and they got Lorin Maazel (not that I think Maazel was a bad choice).
