The Knicks never had to hide Randle defensively. Most star players who have to expend a lot of energy on offense, have to pace themselves on defense. The thing is y'all still refuse to acknowledge Randle as that type of player, but you'll see it soon enough. Randle can play elite defense when it is required from him. Throughout his whole career he has taken assignments against some of the best scorers in the league, and done well. His 1v1 defense is great when it needs to be, but yes, sometimes his team defense can suffer due to lapses in focus, but like I said, that's not uncommon with star players, but Randle rarely gets the benefit of the doubt, so people will try to lower his value anyway they can.
It's basically even but the addition of Donte makes a win for the wolves without a doubt. He carried the Knicks so much last playoffs for a role player and he gives effort on defense. The stagger with Randle will also be better
i think Wolves won the trade. Randle is a stud on a good contract and "prove it" year. He will show out, he is super motivated. Donte is a stud too and a absolutely great contract.
and a 1st rounder! We broke up the big three and built a team where 7-9 of the guys, either definitely would or at least might, start on another team in the league. That's Wolves in depth. I hope this year's defense equals last years. That was pretty boss! They could literally trade the best guy on the team for a plethora of first round picks, and they would likely still make the playoffs. When's that ever been true of the Wolves before? Like... never.... The talent is high overall!
what do you think randle has to prove? I think he’s shown out the past few years and has just gone underrated due to those first poorly constructed knicks team that he took to the playoffs
Discounting Kat's defense after this playoffs is kinda crazy Hes definitely an inconsistent defender, and isnt exactly what you would expect out of a 5, but his defense against KD and Jokic was fucking amazing. Its was honestly his defining moment as a member of the Wolves...
Calling it amazing is a stretch. Against jokic all he provided was a big body to slow him down a little bit, which gave the rest of the timberwolves time to help/double. This only worked because gobert, reid and daniels were there to back hjm up. And its exactly why gobert had trouble guarding jokic, not because he cant do the same thing as kat but because his line of help was now kat who is not great at providing rim protection/help. With kat at center now, the knicks are going to have an exploitable "rim protector" which will undoubtedly make their defense suffer compared to last year when hartenstein was the C
Too bad you can't say the same against Daniel Gafford, PJ, Derrick Lively and Derrick Jones. Dallas big exposed him. The Wolves have seen this out of him the last 9 years. He's incredibly soft, turnover prone, folds under pressure and cant be relied on in big moments. The wolves played well without him, and will be fine in the future without. When his new contract kicks in and he's paid 50 mill a year, people are gonna start asking how the Knicks can get out of his contract
@bobbybobwellington Wolves were at the bottom of the league for defensive rating and a lottery team before Gobert replaced him at the 5. It was the team playing defense on Jokic and KD. Sure, KAT was the guy on them, but Gobert holding down the paint and McDaniels/Ant trapping when KD or Jokic would drive on KAT is where the defense held up. When Towns puts up 12 and 8 in an elimination game, NY will see why we got rid of him. Not to mention, his $60 million/year contract might be one of the worst in the league after the new CBS rules. 8th highest paid player for what? A 23 and 12 big with no interior defense.
If all we talking about with Randle is his effort on defense then that’s great. Why? Naz Reid has spoken about he never saw himself as a defensive player but has changed since Rudy and everyone leaned it to that as their identity. Randle has come to the best team to help with his effort. Obviously it’s his choice to buy in but I trust in the culture Wolves have created.
What's interesting in this trade is the history the players already have with the coaches. Randle worked with Finch in New Orleans and KAT ofcourse already had thibs as his coach in Minnesota. Both had very good seasons back then.
I think most people don’t understand either that they chose naz Reid over KAT. If they kept KAT they would’ve lost Reid after this year. And honestly I would’ve done the same
Randle is gonna put effort in on defense or he won't play as much. The team made that clear last season. Defensive effort is the key to playing time in Minnesota.
@@aml2548 Randle dropped 57 on Naz's head last year when KAT was out, but let the haters delude themselves. These people need to inform themselves. @StrawHat-68, just go look up Randle's career high 57 lol.
Moving one of the big three kind of had to happen for money reasons, no? So...on paper... I don't think this strikes as a horrible trade. We have two people that should be good contributors to the team overall, and a 1st rounder for the future. The talent is pretty deep for starters and bench, for every position except maybe SF. McDaniels is probably going to get a lot of minutes this year. I hope KAT all the best! He was great for Minnesota! Randle and DiVincenzo have big shoes to fill. As a Minnesotan, it's strange to feel very optimistic from the git go about the season, but the last couple years.... strangely.... feeling quite optimistic. The trend continues!
Randle's D is dependent on his happiness level. I think Wolves need scoring, so they will be find letting him 'do as he's been doing' as Finch said. Dillingham is a very good passer, and will be developed that way, he was just asked to score in college. They traded up for him at #8, he's the point guard of the future if he develops well.
Kat is unbearable to watch. He makes so many mistakes on the court. Always commits silly fouls offensively and defensively. It's like babysitting the highest paid player on your team. The fans were over it. Finch was over it. Its not even what they got back, its a win for the simple fact that he's not on the team anymore.
PJ Washington received a Gold Badge in 2022 on Bball Index for "Post Move Lockdown." So, he may be tougher in the post than one may think. While KAT isn't punishing defenders in the post, his point per possession on post offense is pretty solid. I would suspect his post-game will make a semi-return playing under Thibs again and playing the 5 spot primarily on offense.
THE ONLY WAY this works with Randle is if both ANTMAN & RANDLE can have great chemistry / off ball movement with each other to create quick offense and unselfish offense, very similar to Lebron and Dwade. Lebron & Dwade worked because they had such great chemistry and unselfishness. Their first year they didn’t have any of that, but year 2/3 together were amazing to watch.
The pick isnt that heavily protected. I dont think the Pistons will be a bottom 8 team 2 years from now. It's a lot more valuable than you are giving it credit for.
I think the most obvious point people aren’t considering is how much better ANT is going to be this year 😂 He is ready to be the high usage guy, Naz Reid, Jayden McDaniels are all ready to level up They lost size but they got VERY FAST
I mean you woulda never guessed kat would guard super stars before last year. And the wolves got options if Randle isn’t defending. Plus he’s tryna get paid so he’s gonna give a f
People said KAT couldn’t or wouldn’t play defense. They said he was too soft and couldn’t play physical on ball… last year he was 7th in the league in defensive rating. He bought into the defensive identity that this team established and he stepped his game up. If they can get Randle to buy in as well, perhaps they can get similar results out of him. He’s not a terrible defender, but he can be lazy at times and maybe has never had the proper motivation to play otherwise. Maybe he becomes a defensive liability… and gets traded… or maybe he becomes a more rounded player and you see some eyebrows raise. 🤷🏻♂️
TF are you talking about? This is CLEARLY a massive Win for Minnesota. It plugs their biggest weakness- consistent bench offense from deep and an actual mid-range/post player. These two are what KAT was SUPPOSED to be in one player but could never figure it out. Combine them with an Improved Naz Reid and McDaniels AND Rob Dillingham and the other pick, and suddenly Minnesota has offense to match their defense without missing a step. They are going to be very difficult to beat in a series.
Thoughts on offensive spacing? A projected lineup will be Ant (35.7%) McDaniels (33.7%) Conley (44.2%) Gobert (0%) and now they go from KAT (41.6%) to Randle (31.1%)
Kat was not at all an end game player. Meaning, the kobe or jordan factor. Heck, the pg13, kawhi, ant, booker, durant factor. You cannot have a guy being paid in future 50-60 million and him not be an option for a last second shot to win a game. The play would have to be scripted and work perfectly. Someone like Ant, and heck, Dillingham already has the ability to get off any shot from anywhere at any time. That is how and where you invest in. Randle is not good at it either but is a heck of a lot better at it than Kat is.
I really like a lot of the detailed elements of this but, I just think that you're undervaluing the Timberwolves even more, despite giving them some credit, we have the most talented roster in the entire NBA next year, and you're also underestimating Randle and his defense and his passing ability
Most talented roster is a stretch and a half imo. Randle is a good defender yes but as the video stated he’s extremely inconsistent. He’s also a good passer yes but KAT was a much better passing hub for them.
@@connorlee1868with Ju being able to attack the rim and draw doubles I think it obviously will open up the floor more. Randle has a knack for making good passes to cutters and shooters. A lot of people be forgetting Naz Ried is as good of an offensive threat as Randle. There still some redundancy in the roster. Both Randle and Naz should be starting. What's your closing lineup w/ Naz Gobert Randle as bigs, Ant Conley & Dillingham as guards, and NAW JMac DiVincenzo as forwards. Any lineup you make will lack defense, size, playmaking or spacing. I bet they will end up benching Rudy a lot, which just shows he isn't worth his contract sadly.
