  • Clip of Vivienne Westood's appearance on Wogan with Sue Lawley on BBC1 in 1988 with fellow guests Russell Harty and Janet Street-Porter.
The audience respond to Vivienne's "Time Machine" collection by laughing at the models in the studio.
This clip which features commentary from Colin McDowell and Peter York is taken from "Fashion versus the BBC" which was shown on BBC4 in January 2009 as part of its "Timeshift" series.
Dame Vivienne Westwood passed away peacefully in London on 29 December 2022.

Why invite her on the show to present her work only to laugh at and mock her and her artwork. As an artist that is an absolute nightmare, the most humiliating and frightening thing to even think about. 30 years later and Westwood is the only person on that stage remembered. She's an icon and an artistic genius.

I remember when this happened, I was only little. Vivienne Westwood is a fashion icon and fashion historian, I hated the behaviour at the time - it feels like an attack on the working classes - Vivienne's links with the punk movement and coming from a working class family in Derbyshire. Russell Harty is just being deliberately obtuse - clearly the mini crini isn't something designed for the purpose of doing your weekly shop, what a ridiculous thing to say. what i find really interesting is that people call her crazy, delusional, stupid, stuck up, out of touch, but VW is highly influenced by world history; her designs are super grounded and have a lot of context. you're all yapping on about "tradition", "good taste" and "decorum" and yet she's more aware and educated on it than you ever will be. she can definitely be shy and awkward when talking about what she loves but she knows exactly what she's reworking or tearing apart & she's having (OMG) fun with it. i have more respect for people who critique her for being a collage maker rather than an innovator (even though i disagree) than for anyone who just thinks she's pretentious or daft.

I totally agree with Russell Harty, what a load of rubbish fashion that nobody in their right mind would wear, and the laughter of the audience just proves it. The gentleman’s suit at the end was beautiful tailoring, but why put it up against a fancydress display. Just attention seeking. It’s a bit like the story of the King’s New Clothes, where only the little boy could see the truth, and Russell was that boy stating the truth.

Why is Vivienne Westwood famous? She was the girlfriend of Malcolm Mclaren who manufactured the Sex Pistols, who were famous because they were the fashionable thing. They swore on TV, and released an anti monarchy song whilst Vivienne did the clothes. They made a name out of being rude. So why complain when one of them gets a deserving taste of her own medicine?

Have you seen Wogan he is an Irish piss taker he would of been the first to ask what’s this about then ? Probably why he decided to go on holiday like he didn’t want to be sat having to defend an eccentric fashion designer at a time when people didn’t understand that expression stuff at all and were brought up in a world of power cuts miner strikers and wars , Of course today with our child like attitudes to life based on our own decadent need for nothing society we can all appreciate someone who wears clothes like that woman off the Hunger Games. I mean Lady Gaga eat ya heart out but back in the 80’s when the government was fighting miners and Argentina and society had reached a cross roads between serious WW2 1950’s black and white and the new punk revolution inspired kids of the 1960’s times were very different I mean back then there was no internet most people thought who is this mental health patient and why is she on Wogan ? But the fact people laughed is great it’s an expression of there opinions I mean GB was still at heart a very traditional country and working class people didn’t have the money to waste on these eccentric crazy clothes, Only the rich people of the upper class could do that
