      In fairness, catapults and trebuchets require open and at least mostly relatively flat terrain in order to be brought in and used, so there are some potential scenarios where they could not be brought in and so something had to be improvised to their effect.
      Then again, I'm not exactly an expert on medieval history, so I am unaware of any castles - or just any fortified place that could warrant a catapult or trebuchet - located in or near enough a forest of pine trees. I imagine that as much as such a location could provide some decent protection from seige weapons, I bet it would also make it easier to sneak up to and the into/past the walls.
      I don't know. Like I said, I'm not an expert on the subject, so I could just be blowing smoke.

    6:03 there's actually an old police training video that explains this phenomenon pretty well. It instructed officers not to take cover behind cars in between the wheels, because of a suspect fired at the ground in front of the car, the rounds would skim along the ground and hit the person hiding behind the vehicle in the legs. Same guess for standing right next to a wall or peeking out from around the end of one; a round that strikes that wall will skim down the wall and hit you in the face, Rather than ricochet off at the same angle it hit the wall at.
    All because of the deformation of the bullet.

    Conifer Catapults are awesome. People still use them when up to mischief. But hurling plague corpses? The stories about lobbing plague victims over walls arose from a siege in 1346. The Golden Horde army (Mongols) _was laying siege to Caffa, a Genoese trading center on the Crimean Peninsula. But as Janibeg, the ruler of the Golden Horde, waited for Caffa to surrender, his fighters began to succumb to a mysterious ailment. "It was as though arrows were raining down from heaven to strike and crush the Mongols", a notary from the city of Piacenza in present-day Italy wrote. According to the 14th century account, the beleaguered Mongol commanders had one final move: to hurl their plague dead over the fortress walls."_ Brutal.

    There is a reason the eye protection you wear at a gun range is just hard plastic. You're eyes are the only thing soft enough for a ricochet to really do anything to. I've even had a round hit me off of a plate and the only reason it really hurt was because of how hot the metal was. A bigger round might do more, but a handgun round just doesn't have enough energy. (Unless you are doing something really weird/dangerous. Then the ricochet is the least of your worries.)

      @verynefarious solid ammunition is made to not deform like lead or lead core ammo. When you want a ricochet copper or brass solids are the go to. Watch any demo ranch or Kentucky ballistics video about ricochets. Flat nose projectiles are actually made to go straight through a target, not tumbling whatsoever. Which are mostly made normally with copper jacket and lead core.

  • @kamikazemelon787
    @kamikazemelon787 17 днів тому +1

    the danger in ricochet actually comes from the cratering of targets that are both too soft and too close to the shooter, essentially boomeranging the bullet (or large enough fragments of it) directly back. Higher energy rounds like from a rifle will absolutely ricochet back off of mild steel instead of shattering. Interesting that they used a .45 for this as well since that's a large, heavy subsonic bullet so there isn't much energy to lose from the jump. Using a 5.56 or even a 7.62x51 would have been fun to see!

    Okay, don't get your panties in a bunch, I am a BIG fan of Myth Busters. I mean, how can you NOT love a show whose basic premise is blowy-uppy?
    HOWEVER, there are SOOOOOO many things wrong with their so-called scientific methodology.
    In the first myth, Jamie and Adam are far too focused on the projectile, and not at all on the possible (even probable) inaccuracies of the base myth.
    As a veteran and a mechanic, i have seen mechanical objects/devices perform some absolutely MIRACULOUS events.
    Their second mistake is having such a compact bench test. They are literally firing from point-blank range. What was there FIRST mistake? Assuming the points of ricochet HAD to be ONLY 4, and that at 90° to each other. After all, who's firing steel ball bearings out of their pistol, other than these 2 knuckleheads?
    It is far more likely that there were multiple (as in more than 4) points of contact, with far lower angles of attack, which would greatly reduce the loss of momentum at each point, and (thus) greatly reduce the deformation of the projectile.
    In the second myth, the item which comes BLARINGLY to mind, is the simple fact of HANDLING A DISEASED CORPSE. Medicine and understanding of disease was HIGHLY misunderstood a thousand years ago, and they certainly had no realistic means of proecting themselves from contagion like bubonic plague. How would they manage to get a diseased corpse loaded, without risking contamination of the loaders?
    Just as in recent events, people were absolutely TERRIFIED of disease. Especially one that killed half the population of Europe. If i were an enlisted man back then, and threatened with death by execution or chancing a slow, torturous death by plague? Id take the quick execution.

    In WWII the Germans had an attachment for their rifles that allowed them to shoot around corners without exposing themselves to return fire. If I understand correctly they were developed for use by tankers to shoot at people who got close to the tanks without exposing themselves to enemy fire. They were awkward to use from a tank and not super effective because of fragmentation of the bullet but they did work and saw some use in urban fighting. They were called the Krummlauf. They came in 30-, 45-, 60-, and even a 90 degree version. They weren’t good for very many shots with the higher the angle the quicker it would wear out and the more the bullets would break up and deform but they did work.

      iirc the Mythbusters had another episode about that! it was mostly about cartoon characters bending a gun to shoot their wielder, but they did mention the krummlauf!

    • @Yvolve
      @Yvolve 14 днів тому

      It was called the Krumlauf. Krum means bent, lauf means barrel, so bent-barrel. Only the 30 degree version sort of worked, but mostly the bullet would disintegrate from the forces. The sharper angles would all blow through in one, or several shots. It never really went anywhere.
      The modern version is the Cornershot, which allows you to shoot a pistol around a corner.

    Conifer catapult might work if you construct more of a slingshot using two trees, you get double the amount of spring, but are at the mercy of luck... if no pair of sufficiently similar trees are so positioned as to make the slingshot viable, it simply won't work.
    However... might be more effective to simply cut down the tree and use it to build a conventional siege engine.
    I also somehow doubt that any sane general would have commanded his soldiers to physically handle a corpse infected with smallpox or various other diseases. Might have launched bodies (without smallpox or other), or parts of bodies into the castle and this would have roughly the desired effect of spreading disease.

    Hmm, don't like how they discounted the steel bounce by bouncing off a thick steel plate. It's definitely mechanically significantly different to an I beam as on construction sites, especially under load.

      Don't forget that for something like 3 or 4 full seasons they were using a lexan that was absolutely NOT bullet resistant. I forget exactly the episode it was that they realized how useless it was for what they were doing, but I want to say it was about the time they started bringing in Frank Doyle or JD Nelson.

    The tree catapult one is kinda silly. Any castles and such would have a good distance cleared out around it, making it highly unlikely for any trees tall enough to be in range, even if it were to launch a moderate distance.

    Watching this episode and growing up and then visiting Asia made me realize that "catapult" thing can be plausible. I've seen Asian men in the coconut industry climb and saw very tall coconut trees on the top and make that coconut tree swing like crazy.

    • @Yvolve
      @Yvolve 14 днів тому

      European trees don't bend like coconut trees, they're very different plants. The myth is partly true: they did fling bodies over castle walls back in the day but with a catapult or trebuchet. The tree part is the myth.

    I don’t remember the initial angle but I think it was like 40 degree angle with a shotgun at a hard surface like concrete or black top is supposed to give you a ricochet of 20 degrees. This will allow you to hit someone hiding behind a car above the ankles which will cause the hidden person to move to where you have a better shot at them.

    A few guns with curved barrels were actually made, so they could shoot around corners. Not that curved, of course😅
    They didn't get used much, though, because a lot of the time, the bullets would end up eviscerated, and the pieces that came out the end were too slow and small to hurt anyone
