Hey, just how short do you keep your nails now? I used to play completely nailless, but have grown them a bit (about level with the fingertip) in order to play tremolo and I’m loving this kind of ‘hybrid’ way of playing, I get the benefit of a bit of nail to help catch the string for tremolo but it doesn’t sound as ‘tinny’ as full blown nails. Your playing is immaculate 👍

    • @brandonacker

I've been fluctuating between no nail and very short nails like you mentioned. In this video I have no nail at all. Very short nails and using mostly flesh is a great sound too!

@@kenz2756 It's hard enough, when you try to hold the sustains and maintain the sonorous solemnity of the piece. When you add the pulloffs/appoggiaturas Acker uses it becomes quite impressive. I'd say the piece is probably easier on the lute. I have not played it on the lute, but the low gut-string frets on the lute make it less strenuous on the left hand.

@@kenz2756 yes, it is. Difficult. I bought the arrangement and struggle to learn it. Hobbyist here, no complete beginner though. There is not a single difficult note or grip on the entire sheet. Alas, the dynamics. And the speed of, partially weird, grip swaps (3rd string to f#! So very luty...). The only advice I can give to others with confidence: Learn the song first. Know which notes are melody and which are adornments. Were the thing not so immensely cool... I'd just stick to "Mr. Dowland's Midnight" and call it a day.

Nice practice for a legato is to practice slow (as every other practice) and make small movements. You should be practicing with the smallest motion of finger as possible. Study Carlevaro's method which is the best method for practicing classical guitar technique. There are 4 books:
      1. Major and Minor scales.
      2. Right hand technique
      3. Left hand technique
      4. Right and left hand mixed and legato

Here's the lyrics to the Vocal Version from the Composer.
Flow my tears, fall from your springs
    Exiled forever, let me mourn
Where night's black bird her sad infamy sings
    There let me live forlorn
Down vain lights, shine you no more
No nights are dark enough for those
That in despair their lost fortunes deplore
    Light doth but shame disclose
Never may my woes be relieved
    Since pity is fled
And the tears and sighs and groans, my weary days
My weary days of all joys have deprived
From the highest spire of contentment
    My fortune is thrown
And fear and grief and pain for my deserts, for my deserts
Are my hopes, since hope is gone
Hark, you shadows that in darkness dwell
    Learn to contemn light
Happy, happy they that in hell
    Feel not the world's despite
Hark, you shadows that in darkness dwell
    Learn to contemn light
Happy, happy they that in hell
    Feel not the world's despite

I love it. Also because I have been loving the sound of the guitar all my life. I wonder though, what would Dowland think of it? How would the piece be, had he known and used the guitar in the late 16th century? We will never know. But this probably would be quite a different piece.
There is a calling-out quality to the lute version, fitting the despairing lyrics. The guitar makes it contemplative.

I think it has a lot to do with the angle of one's guitar, but there must be a compromise, and there are incredible players that cock their guitars at nearly 0° and some beyond 90° and do incredible stuff.

Fernando Sor talks about the perfect spot for playing in general (with gut and no nails) is 1/10th the length of the string which is very much on the bridge. I agree with him that playing on the bridge is the perfect spot for an articulate and focused sound that is still resonant.
Nail shape depends on your hand and instrument position. If you change the angle of holding the guitar, yes you'll need to change your nail shape.
I like the ramped approach you talked about.

Very lovely artful playing with skilled use of dynamics that inspires me as a guitarist and your touch of sounding accents with a melodic quality is so alluring.

I just picked up my first classical guitar and your channel has been an incredible source of helpful tips and inspiration, so thank you!
    P.S.
You look kind of similar to the doctor from Firefly. I don't know if you've ever seen that show but its definitely worth a watch if you haven't. 😅

At minute 2:30 … never seen cadential trills played with that right hand technique and it looks extremely useful and musically appropriate - very light whereas my usual alternate fingerings (m, i or p, i) may sound a little heavy-handed. I'd be very grateful if you could provide a little explanation on how to perfect that technique, where to use it and how you came by it ;D

Beautiful sound and playing. I have subscribed. Was the audio of this piece recorded separately from the video? How did you add there reverb, assuming it's not the natural reverb of the room. Wood floor? Thank you. Love the blues walls, too!

Imagine having nylon strings on a lute. It'll probably have a different sound compared it to having gut strings.

Brandon me encantan tus vídeos, los retos y ocurrencias que nos enseñas para desafiar nuestra curiosidad y placer musical. Qué bien suena esa pieza de Dowland en guitarra, no sé si me gusta más que la versión clásica de laúd.
