"Korean Government just Told us to Wait" Discriminated Foreign Victims of Itaewon Disaster [ENG SUB]

- A total of 26 foreigners were killed in the Itaewon disaster in October last year. Immediately after the disaster, the Korean government promised to support foreign victims without discrimination, but according to the report, foreign victims have been virtually discriminated against, such as not receiving proper information related to the disaster.
Newstapa met Kim Na-ri, the older sister of the late Korean-Austrian Kim In-hong, who was killed in the Itaewon disaster, and heard how the Korean government has treated foreign victims. Kim Na-ri told Newstapa, "I don't think there is any treatment for foreign victims. No one gave us the right information."

18:27 This is exactly why I left Korea. 8 years of that feeling (hands shaking, tears and anger building along with embarrassment, and a total lack of empathy or any helpful suggestion). Simply unapologetic dead ends everywhere you go in Korea as a foreigner. Then the disdainful looks you get for crying because they can't relate at all. And look, this woman speaks fluent Korean, so no one can even claim it's a language barrier issue. I felt that way WITHOUT losing a loved one. I'm so so so sorry she has to deal with this.

And the scariest thing is that people in the video are of Korean origin if I'm not mistaken. I'm trying to imagine if an ethnic Korean person get this kind of treatment I wonder how it's like for non-Korean people. I always hear about the subtle racism in East Asian countries but it's sad nevertheless.
@@ekinersoy3002 EA’s racism is no where near subtle. They’re as loud as can be, especially South Korea. Even North Korean defectors face extreme racism there.
@@brightiris Yeah I know about that. I read that North Korean defectors are mocked for simple things like not knowing how to use a computer. There are interviews of them and it's really heartbreaking to see that they're not completely accepted in their new homes. When I said subtle I meant a different thing. I think South Korea is more racist when compared to other EA countries and most of them don't even try to hide it. Their treatment of North Koreans explain everything. Even though both are ethnic Koreans northerners can't adjust to the South and the latter doesn't try so hard to accomodate them. When I say subtle it's more like Japanese peoples' "don't show, don't tell" kind of attitude. Most foreigners say that in East Asia, especially Japan, people smile to your face but never accept you even though you speak perfect Japanese and learn the cultural and social norms by heart. It's like you're always an outsider to them. Maybe it's not that subtle, I don't know honestly. In some places racism is so agressive and when I compare, East Asia looks more subtle. But I agree that South Korea is exceptionally xenophobic. Even their laws regarding immigration are xenophobic. So is Japan's. Most foreigners who lived in South Korea don't have much positive things to say. I'm trying to look into the situation from every side but it's hard to form an objective opinion since I've never visited South Korea. I hope the younger generation is more open to people from other parts of the world.
As a foreigner living in Korea, I can say that the prime minister is absolutely disgrace. So irresponsible, so foolish, so dismissive. Get him out. get them all out.

There is no law guidelines on failure and bad public services on their duties on work for government staff and management. An issue of complaint filed are for recording purposes and no action done. I wander why we even need so many government staff and management sitting lazy and not motivated to serve the public on their jobs.
Now, imagine if she didn't speak Korean? How much worse would it have been? They wouldn't have even spoken to her. The discrimination against foreigners in Korea is insane. Forward in technology but backwards in everything else.

Can you believe this?? I was shocked, She’s foreigner but she and her family are absolutely korean, they speak Korean and their relatives are korean and she couldn’t apply at first to receive help… now can you imagine the families who aren’t korean and lost someone too…. the korean government need to make some changes about a lot of things, cuz the country increase the resources because the foreigners. Now is not only the Korean government, all the governments of the world need to make changes when situations like this happens avoiding the discrimination .
One of the reasons I also gave up on working in Korea. I learnt Korean for 5 years and attained fluency by living in Korea. But every time, I wasn’t treated as a human. I was never called by my name or just by « that person ». It was always « this », « that foreigner » and more. I’ve lived in other countries and I have never felt that excluded. It was fine before because I thought the government wasn’t xenophobic. Until they issued a legal policy that all foreigners working in Korea had to get tested for COVID (Koreans working with them were not required to do so). I packed my things and left that country immediately. Korea’s lack of empathy towards foreigners doesn’t even surprise me anymore. You could literally cry, beg or even die, they would never care about you.

I am so sorry for this young woman's family. My heart is breaking for all of young people who lost their precious lives in this tragedy. The government of South Korea needs to learn how to treat foreigners more politely. They treat you like you are their enemies who come to destabilize the government, but for the love of God! These people want answers and put an end to their suffering.

As a foreigner who lived in Korea I know all too well the struggle Na-Ri is going through. The red lines Korean puts up for foreigners is crazy without having to deal with the death of a family member. Each year during my stay in Korea I saw how it was made harder and harder for foreigners living there. Heck even opening a simple bank account became more difficult in the span of 3 years because of new rules and regulations that were put in place by the government. In a place where immigration calls you by a country and not your name, foreigners are truly seen inhuman. Even with Korean decent Na-Ri and her family are struggling to find the truth. My heart truly goes out for them and all other foreign victims families. I hope one day they can find the truth and get some sort of relief. Lord only knows how much harder it is for the families that don’t know Korean.

I heard that the same treatment exist in Japan too. They, too, make it hard for foreigners to live in Japan. Some people even say that East Asian countries have the most racist and xenophobic laws regarding the foreigners.
@@ekinersoy3002 As a person who has lived in Japan for over twenty years, I completely disagree with you. When the tsunami hit, the whole country was in shock, the government provided special help for foreigners. Opening channels so relatives could find information in their languages. Every time there is a typhoon or earthquake warning, we immediately receive alerts in our language. And if I call my city hall, I have all the assistance I need if one of my relatives dies. So no, it's not the same. You can say that SOME Japanese people are racist, but the government doesn't do what the Korean government did to this family.
@@angelS2hatobr You completely miss my point and give me just one example. It's good that they care during the disasters but it doesn't contradict my point. I'm talking about immigration laws. When compared to the other developed nations in the West, Japan is definitely less accomodating. It's good that they're better than Korea in regards of this but this fact still doesn't change that the government makes it hard for the foreigners. A lot of them complain about microagressions and not being completely accepted in the society, especially if they're not white. Also this is the humane thing to do, victim blaming like what the Korean president did is wrong. Let's agree on that but their compassion during the disasters doesn't cancel out other things. I'm talking about their attitude in general, not just during the disasters. You're focusing on only one thing. It's good that they have a manual for foreigners during disasters but like I said it doesn't contradict my other points. Racism in East Asian countries is acknowleged by most people, it doesn't matter if you disagree or not. It's nice that you had a good time but apparently that's not the case for most people. Also I don't have anything against Japanese people. On the contrary, I'm very sympathetic towards them, except for their ultranationalists. Most foreigners agree on that anyway. The problem is more complex.
@@ekinersoy3002 I fail to understand this mentality. I don't know these laws you refer to. I have lived here for over twenty years and so have my parents. We are not japanese, wherever we go we stand out, and we don't live in a big city, we live in a small town in the countryside. We have never been discriminated against, in terms of documentation and rights, our family and all the immigrants we know never had any problems either. We have a peaceful life. Whenever I see people criticizing and saying that the country doesn't accommodate foreigners, I wonder what kind of accommodation is still necessary? I honestly ask, because I don't know what they're talking about.

I'm so sorry for this beautiful family. It must be hard not receiving the support that was promised to you and that you deserved. The incompetence of the Korean government in this matter made the grief process even worse for everyone who lost someone in this awful incident. Kudos to the sister for fighting, but the fact that she had to fight in the first place proves the incompetence of the government and the government officials who should simply be ashamed. But, as proven by that awful politician who dismissed the concerns of the family, they clearly have no shame to begin with.
I hope this family will be able to heal and find peace someday. Sending you all the love. And thanks to the journalists for investigating. This issue needs to be known.

I am a foreighner having Korean origin. As this victimized family had done, I always told my children that they should retain their family root and pride. My children has happily abided by my advice since Korea has shown the globe its excellece in many aspects, such as culture, economy, democratic citizenship, etc. 2002 World cup game, democratic candle movement , and K-culture are some of the positive Korean influence. However, I cannot keep asking me them to bear Korean pride in ther mind any more. Many incidents guring last couple of years ruined our Korean spirit of my family.

I've lost so many loved ones, my husband is paralyzed from the chest down because a doctor messed up his surgery, and I myself have gone though unfathomable things... but for all of it...when others apologize I find comfort in it and feel grateful for their empathy. They might not know the struggle, they might have nothing to do with it, but they cared enough to acknowledge. Yes, some may do it to make themselves feel better. Some people give to the needy to make themselves feel good. Some people are kind to others because it elevates them. But people are nuanced and not everyone is like that. You are looking it from a a narrow pov. A pessimistic one. You don't know op...they might be genuine or they might not but to assume who they are without truly knowing them is not sensible.

In the first place, the Korean government, Yoon Suk Yeol, and the ruling People's Power Party have never made any official apologies to the Korean victims. Of course they won't apologize to the Itaewon foreign victims, and they won't be able to expect anything from them unless the regime is replaced. All I can advise you is to press the current Korean government, which avoids responsibility, hard externally.
Why the have to apologize for something that they not involve? so the unnecessary death after the itaewon tragedy means nothing to you to? keep looking for someone to blame? if you swimming in the ocean and get drown government need to apologize?
@@anubizz3In this case they indeed were involved, literally EVRERYONE EXCEPT THE PRIME MINISTER AND HEAD OF NATIONAL POLICE KNEW THERE WAS GONNA BE A TRAGEDY. And no one sounded the alarm. So yes, they are largely responsible for it.

1주기가 다가오건만 아무것도 해결된게 없습니다. 유가족분들 가슴에는 피멍이 아직도 그대로인데 기대할것 없는 이 정부는 10.29참사를 마치 말하지않으면 일어나지 않은 일이 되고 그렇게 덮어버리면 된다고 생각하는 것 같습니다. 진상규명과 책임자처벌이 반드시 이루어질 수 있도록 계속 관심가지겠습니다.

It's disgusting that the government is doing so little to help the victims and their family. Not only that they also refuses to take any responsibility to admit that it was their inadequacy in preparation which has caused this incident. My friend who has a Korean citizenship but was raised most of her life overseas, the hospital refuse to admit that she was a victim from the incident, we keep asking and begging for the hospital to provide medical record for the family so they can receive the compensation that is required for her medical expenses (surgeries and hospitalisations fees) for staying in the hospital for half a year, but was constantly brushed off by the hospital staff. My friends family is already traumatised from the shocking news itself the fact that she was in a coma for a month and now they have to put with all these extra things. It's so traumatising for me as a a friend to see all of these things happening, I can't imagine how heartbroken, angry, frustrated and disappointed the family would feel. I wish they just handle this whole situation more seamlessly for all the victims, as this is a painful memory for everyone. My deepest sympathy to all the victims who have passed away from this incident.
Hats off newstapa for bringing voice for the victims of any disaster in Korea who are always put down by unfair treatment so callous and heartless imagine you can't even mourn their loved one properly because of lack of support that the government should do.

Exactly bruh especially the Korean high schoolers. The parents of the late 17 year old high Schooler Lee Hyunseob would be feeling the same way In-Hong’s family is because they never got the proper help they needed for his death (he took his own life 2 years ago after he couldn’t handle the bullying the school cared for nothing about) and his school didn’t care at all. Because of how everything was hard for them it got to where his mom asked any coverage of him be deleted because seeing the coverage hurt her.

I have seen multiple videos of discrimination and sexual harassment against foreigners in South Korea, and so many people have been saying that the SK police or the government don't help at all. What’s even happening in that country? I hope the victims find peace. This is so heartbreaking.

This poor family, my heart is just breaking for what has happened to them. Completely no empathy from the Korean Government at all which is so incredibly disappointing.
On my previous visit to Korea, I too know the discrimination that foreigners can receive - the look of being a second class or lower citizen for not being Korean (which is so different to warm and inviting facade shown overseas through k pop culture).
May the family remain strong and finally receive some peace.

1년이 지났음에도 여전히 참담하고 부끄럽습니다. 이렇게 무책임한 사고 처리는 정말 처음 보는 것 같아요.. 아무도 처벌받지 않고 아무도 책임지지 않다니 믿어지지가 않네요. 아직도 고통받고 계신 유가족분들에게 뭐라 말씀을 드릴 수가 없어요..
반대로 오스트리아 정부에서 (자국국민에 대해) 해당 문제에 대해 도움을 요청할 수 있는지, 어떤 지원을 받았는지 비교해보는 것도 후속 취재로 의미가 있을 듯 합니다.

As a third culture kid (Asian born and raised in Europe) I can relate so much to her story. One of my relative passed away in Motherland. We were also considered foreigners and not given any support.
Even if they moved abroad, this family is ethnically Korean, she speaks and writes the language. Really heartbreaking.
They are rejected only because they don’t live in Korea. That is truly disgusting.
May her brother rest in peace and the family the strength to bear the pain.
