Who else was on the edge of their seat while watching this incredible recounting of a high-stakes hijacking from the 1970s? It's fascinating to see how different airport security was back then. What are your thoughts on the measures taken by law enforcement to handle this intense situation?
I remember hearing about hijackings when I was a little girl. My mom was terrified because Dad did a lot of air travel for his job.
I think the law enforcement and the FBI did what they could. I mean, they had like zero security, so they had to rely on the goodwill of onboarding passengers to be decent people. Then this happens. Frankly, anything could happen. He could've been bluffing, but they couldn't take any chances.

Richard McCoy, Jr. was caught two days later. He was hitchhiking in the jumpsuit, so the guy who picked him up found him to be suspicious enough to notify authorities. Wikipedia has more information than I expected, so you might want to check it out!

He escaped prison 1974 and was shot dead by an FBI agent

Convicts should never be on planes
The convict provided the fbi with the only description of the Hijacker, prior to him changing into disguise.
The non convict was the one who hijacked the plane.
But I get what you mean, as a hijacking could be arranged as a means of freeing a convict.

I'm glad he got away. After all his meticulous planning, his lack of animosity and violence, it would have been a pity had he been captured. Yes, he did give the crew some harrowing moments but all was well in the end. They have a great story to tell for the rest of their lives, and their children's and grand children's lives.
Thank you for sharing this, Real Crime!
He didn't get away. Richard Floyd McCoy Jr was sentenced to 45 years for this hijacking. www.fbi.gov/history/famous-cases/richard-floyd-mccoy-jr
And DB Cooper died. Some of the money he parachuted with was found decades later scattered in a remote area. I remember that much, anyway. He's presumed to have died in the wilderness, wherever he landed.
The moral of the story is -- get a real job, don't terrify average folks with your bank robbing or hijacking plans. It's very unlikely to have a good outcome for you. :P

I watched this similar episode on ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS or tales of the unexpected . In story, pilots and crew reported a hijack but ended up dividing money among themselves. I'll check on the correct title of episode
Worked for major airline most of us don't care as long as we get paid. Pilots splitting $ is standard practice. I used to sell First Class for cash I made mega bucks again standard practice. Everyone loves $$$ and everyone does it. I've seen everything.

I watched a documentary on the 1974 air New Zealand crash into Mt Erebus in Antarctica. It involved the rescue of bodies by mostly young and inexperienced police officers. No loud music or sensationalism just honest recollections by those involved and their incredible efforts and the aftermath. Brief coverage of missing evidence and the govt, and corporation executive coverup of any liability, blaming the captain as a scapegoat. Excellent and respectful. One of the best I'd seen.

Same guy obviously £500'000 dollars in 1972 in today's money must be in the millions.
This will last a lifetime if spent wisely.
He has the back of the aircraft door open and could see small towns lit up and would know where jump ..
He has a lot of knowledge about how the FBI works.
Maybe had a relative in the agency.
He did his home work and knowledge of parachuting .
And knew the chutes would of been bugged .

I guess one can see further
They are older designs but many snipers liked them because they have less peripheral interference and are better for low light conditions when compared to the more common short scope of the time. This was almost 50 years ago.

It was just more.easy to High Jack a plane during those times because ALL screening and security was NOT that strong.. i must say this High Jacker was a Phantom Genius to FOOL federal agents that are Highly Educated.. the most interesting thing he NEVER did harm to any passengers or flight girls! He mainly wanted the money 💲💰💰💲 and to escape. This was the most appealing case in history. I did NOT support High Jacking because many lives are at risk including the Pilots! It was ALL well planed by the stranger. Most certainly he knew exactly what he was doing and he turned out to be invisible! Amazing! .did they ever catch him?! 📀📀📀📀📀

Many years ago here in Seattle , my friend and I went to the park near the lake and as I was walking near the lake I saw a bunch of money in the water covered with leaves and mud
I told my friend about and he saiid where?
So I grabbed a tree branch and I started getting some of the money so I first i got $10 but I stopped because people were looking at me . One guy said what you got - I said $10 . I told my friend to come back later when there is no people around and he said forget it. He said that money stinks. I know up until now that there was a bunch of money in that Lake.
