Finally someone posts something other than "what's best for espresso"! I've narrowed my choices down to these two grinders. Thank you!
Thank you for a great video!! I’ve been using a blade grinder forever. I found your channel incredibly helpful in teaching me what my coffee COULD taste like. I ordered the Opus and I’m astounded. Same coffee, same method, just better grinder completely changed how things taste. So crazy!
Glad you’re enjoying my videos and it’s making a difference in your coffee!! 😊
I'd love to see these vs the typical Barraza and the mignon filtro/crono, nobodies reviewing them!
If I have the opportunity to get my hands on them I would definitely make those videos!
I would want to throw the Baratza ESP in the mix. It would be interesting to find out how it holds up to this competition.
Hi Aaron, I am glad I keep to up with your videos before bought SK40.
I've been using SK40 for nearly 2 months and I am enjoyed it very much.
I have limited budget and switch coffee very often.
Same as your review, switching coffee is so easy with Sk40.
The retention almost zero and consistent.
My only complain is switching setup between espresso and filter took a long journey.
I kinda afraid to clean the grinder because it might change my grind settings, do you have any tips?
Thanks! I would definitely recommend cleaning the grinder occasionally. I can’t imagine it will drastically change your grind settings if at all.
Man ive been pretty set on getting the SK but this is definitely making me second guess...
Well like I said, the workflow and dialing in is nicer with the SK so I don’t think the slight difference in flavor compared to the Opus is necessarily worth it with how tricky the Opus is to dial in. And with different coffees depending on what you like to drink the SK may perform better like I was saying. It’s hard to test for every scenario and variable, this was just my experience with that particular coffee.
Coffee Nerd Aaron, you have a great vibe. Do you have any thoughts on the Eureka Mignon Crono as a rival to the Ode?
Thanks! Unfortunately I’ve not used a Mignon Crono, sorry 😣
All good, thanks!@@coffeenerdaaron
Throw the Encore ESP into this fight too!
ngl. I just switched from encore esp to sk40. theres soo much retention in the baratza even with rdt.
18g 300ml on setting 19 (Coarsest setting) on my SK-40 and I still have a 4:30 contact time (V60). Setting 10 won’t even pull an espresso shot it’s so fine I use setting 13. Is mine shimmed wrong because setting 1-12 is not even useable for anything
I also get really long contact time but I found ~14 to be a good spot for pour over for my coffee still with a contact time around 3:30. I’ve tried coarser to reduce that time but I didn’t like the taste. Sometimes I get way too many fines and my bed looks like chocolate which stalls my brew
That grind is way too fine on the Opus for pourover. You’re barely out of the espresso range. I mean I know you’re using Sibarist filters, but that’s all wrong. Also, if your goal was producing similar testing scenario with a dripper that’s widely available and in use, why on earth would you go with a cafec and not a v60?
The plastic Cefec and the V60 are essentially the same thing aside from the ribbing being slightly different. And to get a draw down time that was around the contact time I was looking for, and to match the the SK that’s where the grind had to be. I was also shocked that I had to go that fine the get the brew times close to the same.
Yeah they’re similar, but the v60 is ubiquitous. It’s a more relevant dripper, as you say, for instance, the Pulsar is not. I’ve ground probably 70 bags of coffee (in 1 or 2-cup brews) for pourover from many different roasters this year, and I have never gone below 7 on the opus.
@cshawnb like I said I was shocked too cause I’m usually in the 6-8 range with the Opus for filter if memory serves (I don’t use it much). But I was also a little finer on the SK than I predicted as well, could’ve just been that particular coffee combined with the fast filters and the Cafec.
Nice video. I can't believe you used siberast paper for this test as it's so $$$. I pinged you on instagram. Keep up the great content.
If I had standard V60 papers I definitely would’ve preferred those for this type of testing!
