Trying the plant later strategy. Planted the second time at the beginning of July. First round were decimated by squash bugs.

Sometimes, squash bugs travel through woodchips or other gardening media.

Here in Houston, we have the dreaded squash vine borer. This devil makes it almost impossible to grow summer squash and difficult to grow the winter varieties. I had better luck planting the butternut later in the summer. Best of luck.

Yes I hate the borers here in TX! Seminole pumpkins are really resistant. This year I planted some blue Hubbard squash which is super attractive to borers- as a trap crop.

Any suggestions for cucumber beetle? This is my first year with them. Not too much damage so far but I haven't seen the offspring yet.

I have never dealt with them, but I know some folks also hand pick them. Maybe other folks who struggle with them can offer advice!
