    I needed this video! I just had my story torn apart in my creative writing class in front of the entire class by a fellow classmate. It was humiliating, disheartening, and I almost dropped the class just so I wouldn’t have to go back and face my class.
    She made no attempt to be polite or kind, she didn’t offer constructive criticism, she just went on a long rant about how terrible of a writer I am. I know I’m not great, but I’m also still learning!
    Anyway, thanks for the video. I needed this. I’ve been feeling like a shit writer (so bad in fact I made a girl visibly ANGRY by how bad of a writer I am, so much so she felt the need to berate me in front of my class). Ugh so awkward. I’m just going to try and get through semester.
    I’m not going to let her and her inappropriate and hostile response to my writing stop me from writing. I’ve cried, I’ve moped, time to write.
    Edit: I just felt the need to add I don’t know this girl, we’ve never interacted outside of the class, I’ve always been very kind in the class and during critiques (and at this point we haven’t even critiqued her story so there’s nothing I could’ve done to piss her off). And she’s never said anything during anyone else’s critique. I was the only one she went off on. That’s how terrible my writing apparently was.
    So if I’m that bad of a writer but am still writing, you can too lol

      I am so sorry that girl bullied you. It doesn't matter what level you're at - you're still learning, and that's the entire point of taking a creative writing class. Plus there was nothing to be gained by her humiliating you. She was 100% in the wrong. Please know her actions are not a reflection on you.

      Good point Jenna. Thanks for the phrase 'Milk the shit out of it'. That is hilarious! Murder walk into the room, I'm almost there. Still got some work to do on that though. Especially if I'm going to share stuff in front of people who aren't my friends.

      Wawa I encountered this too in one of my creative writing classes in college - there was one guy who thought his work was incredible (spoiler alert it was average) and just ripped into everyone constantly. He said my writing style was like a bad cat trying to start and proceed to imitate trying to start a clunker super loudly with lots of hand movements- it was actually so bad that other people in my class went to the head of the program to complain on my behalf. I was so tempted to quit but stuck with it - now I realize he was probably coping with his own insecurities by crapping all over other people's work. Now I'm writing a scientific book chapter for a future textbook for my job and writing a fantasy novel in my spare time 😎💪 unfortunately some people see the need to be unnecessarily cruel in workshops instead of constructive- haters gonna hate - I'm sure you're doing amazing 💕

      Okay woh woh woh. This is the first comment that I've ever had to pause a JENNA MORECI video to address.
      First off, that person sounds like a Grade A, C yoU Next Tuesday. Not cool. I don't even know her and I want to push her into a puddle of mud. I would do that for you, see.
      That said! I'm very happy to see you are not allowing her to stop you from doing what you love. I know how hard it can be to pick up and move on after something like that. I'm sure there are a lot of us on here who would be more than happy to offer critique IN A GOOD WAY so that you can have Actual Feedback that Actually Helps you improve as a writer without tearing you down, though I'd understand completely if you feel a bit hesitant to do that. But we are here if you need :)
      Okay. Unpause.

    • @MultiJesusfreak33
      @MultiJesusfreak33 6 років тому +17

      I'm sorry someone did that to you. It's hard enough sticking with something like this without someone tearing us down. But if this is something you feel called to do, then I would say there's a reason for that, and one person's opinions is not going to change it. I think you're taking the right attitude and not letting her get to you. You know yourself and your style better than she does, so don't take it to heart. Remember that if you keep at it, like with anything else, you can only get better over time.
      Hope this was encouraging; keep on keeping on, fellow writer!

    Thank you. For addressing that fake it until you make it is about mindset not objects, because WAY too many people think “fake it until you make it” is about buying luxury bags, fancy cars, and pricy tech (on credit, causing debt) to show off how successful you are and that this will somehow bring you success. It is 100% what you’re saying, faking confidence in persona and mindset, not opening your wallet and swiping a card on a flex product.

    @AmbiCahira 6 років тому

    Excellent points! I will add what I did to go from no confidence to positive confidence just to add for whoever reading this. The best start is to teach your brain to identify when positive things happen around you so every night before sleep you go through your day and name 3 things that was good about that day. Even if it's "I survived it" "I didn't kill someone" "it's over" and remember that every morning is a reboot of your system. Delete those temporary files! Don't dwell on yesterday. Secondly, when someone gives a compliment don't deny it and say it's not true - say thank you! When you deny you trample on their opinion and feelings they just gave you. When you say thank you, you recieve it and it will grow with time. If you know the person well you can spice it up with "damn right I am!" Speaking of which, the third. Everything you say after I or I am will manifest so throw out "I suck" "I am not very good at it" "I will never..." If you catch yourself saying or thinking these things just replace it with the thought you want instead! I will make it, this book is awesome, I am badass, my confidence can't be contained!
    Next is related. The voice that downtalks you in your head is a bully. If you would never say those things to or about someone that matters to you then don't let that bully do it to you. Don't let that bastard live rent free in your mindspace. Give it a helium voice, it's impossible to take a helium voice seriously. It will help you identify your own thoughts and the bully or even the craving monster. When you treat yourself the way you treat a best friend you earn self love.
    Positive reinforcement; Give yourself a reward for a job well done! I myself lay out chocolate and tell myself in a mom voice that I can't have it until I have done that boring thing I don't feel like doing. When you succeed to complete what you didn't feel like doing you feel accomplished and achieved which helps you feel successful, and in turn you keep your promises to yourself and that will have you earn your own self respect. And that of course is a big key to confidence; self respect.
    Lastly. I used to envy my peers too but everything in life is either helpful or harmful and envy is definitely harmful. So instead of "I will never be able to do that" say "Wow this person has spent so many hours to get that far!" And turn envy into inspiration! Feel inspired to put in more hours!
    I will wrap this up with a motto I made up for myself. "With practice, progress is inevitable."

    Hey,Jenna I needed this I’m almost done writing my first book and I’m only 15 and wasn’t sure I’d because of my age I shouldn’t try to publish it but I love my book and 100% believe in it! You helped me so much on tips and stuff and you help me get my book done. So watch out for Daughter Of Gods!!!! The next awesome book there’s the summary if you wanna read and tell me what you think!
    Saige wasn’t the most popular or “normal” girl ever. She was definitely different, she never fit in with kids her age. When the other girls went out shopping or gossiped about each other Saige would be the girl reading. To be more exact, she would read about greek mythology, She has been intrigued by the whimsical myths ever since she was little, always daydreaming about the gods, monsters, and life in that far off world. Her whole life all she wanted was to be like Athena and Hades, her favorite gods. However what happens when two gods you have idolized all your life come to you and say “We’re your parents and we need your help.” Join Saige as she goes on an epic mission sent by Athena and Hades themselves to save the world as we know it, meeting tons of new friends and getting stuck in odd situations along the way!

    I write best with headphones on and music blasting. I try to make playlists that go with the story I am working on, but there's always some go to bands (Coheed & Cambria and Muse) that make me feel badass and think that whatever I am working on is epically important.
    I also am an artist, specifically illustrations, and only recently do I feel like I finally broke through and honed my skill with that. (I still want continue improving of course!) I learned with my art that obviously it takes a lot of practice and that each piece has steps and can look shitty along the entire way but will inevitably look awesome when it's finished (because I don't stop working on it until I am satisfied with it). Now I just need to learn to apply that to my writing.

    I always come back to you whenever I need some learning about writing. Its been a year now and my story is still not finished bcos I lose confidence and feel sht about myself. Its cringey. I almost forgot that I still have an unfinished work that exist. Not until now when I stumbled on this video. Thank you for this and thanks for reviving me. ^^

    I think we all tell ourselves this, but in the end its hard to take your own advice because you wonder if your just trying to "suck it up".
    I know I can manage to be a great writer. We all can. It takes patience, ambition, heart, and creativity. And no matter what someone thinks of themselves, we all have those things even if our patience is running low or our creativity isn't a juicy as others.

    When it comes to my confidence, I have a tendency to look back on all of my old work. I look at old drafts, old drawings, (Since I tend to sketch as well) and other old pieces and compare them to my current work. So whenever I'm writing what I feel is an incredibly shitty draft, all I have to do is pull up an old notebook and I'm suddenly golden. If I ever f*ck up the proportions on a character design I'm trying out, one look to a picture I drew in the fifth grade, (which I hung on my wall) and suddenly that shitty character isn't nearly as shitty. :D I agree with this 100%, thanks for your advice Jenna.

    After I realized I wasn't feeling great about my writing I began to train myself to practice every day, writing at least 1000 words a night (a night because I'm at college and wow I have no time now). It wouldn't always be on my main piece, as some nights I wouldn't fell up to writing something structured, but I managed to do it. I've currently managed to get myself to actually want to write every night, and this has really helped me to become more confident in my writing! So yeah, practice really helps!

As a fellow resident writer from the Bay Area, I am thrilled to witness your creative enthusiasm every week, and your channel has definitely supported my confidence in writing my debut sci-fi book, "Apex Five". The advice on esteem as an author and avoiding tropes are especially brilliant! Also, the compliments folder is genius. xD

    I have the problem of having written a story, a rough draft anyway, that was purely for myself. The majority of it I wrote during my lunch break at work. People are showing interest and wondering what kind of story I'm writing and want me to share it with them once I've gone through and done a rough edit. My dilemma is I don't feel like simply telling them no, even though I have no intention of showing them any of this particular story. I do have other stories that I intend to write and share, one I'm already a few chapters into right now in fact, but this one is for me and maybe some niche places around the internet where I can remain anonymous. The whole point of writing this story to begin with was simply to prove to myself that I could do it. So now, 593 pages later, I've done it and I'm proud that I did. It's actually really helped me figure out how I want to evolve my writing style for the book I'm currently working on. In essence, I wanted a practice story, so that's what I wrote and I don't regret doing it. It's just the fact that I've managed to draw some unwanted attention to myself in the process is aggravating.

    Seriously loved this video. I have issues with confidence, especially when I speak, but I love writing and it’s hard to talk about my book, especially since it’s a different genre than most people read. But now I have a few things to try and boost (or fake it for now) that confidence ;) thanks Jenna! Also, I couldn’t resist getting something from Charitan as a little reward for myself for editing over 140 pages in two days (which is half of my second book) yay me. Now I just gotta finish ;P which won’t be hard. Hope you’re having an awesome Friday!

    I used to compare myself to popular authors all the time, but what helped me overcome my issues with comparisons was saying, "However long it takes, I will get that author's attention and impress them." It motivates me, however unlikely it may seem now that it'll actually happen. Might not work for everyone, but imagining someone like Stephen King reading my book one day and saying, "That did not suck," makes me wanna keep churning.
