I have a trap set given to me by my great grandfather, 1919/1920 Ludwig and Ludwig 24” 6 lug 4” snare, with double round wood block, double cymbal holder, China , splash cymbal, ratchet, triangle, Chinese tom tom with bass drum mount, Ludwig JR pedal, no wool beater however it does have the cymbal clanger that goes on the wool beater and the side ways cymbal mount, bass drum spurs. I absolutely love the snare drum, had to buy new snare rim clips because most of mine were busted when I was given the kit

I just added a ratchet effect and thought it to be a gas seeing what was on UA-cam on the topic. Great to see one of St. Louis' traditional jazz enthusiasts.

I built a vintage kit based on an original 28 inch bass drum with calf skins. It was in poor condition but I completely stripped, repaired and recovered it, fitted a home made traps table and some modern but vintage looking traps. I even fitted a light inside the drum. The bands I played with HATED it. They complained it was too loud (even before they heard it) as Big must equal Loud, right? The bass player said I couldn’t take it on stage as there wasn’t room and he’d have to stand in the wings! The bass drum is 10 inches wider than the 18 drum on my bebop kit - just 5 inches either side? I think they were searching for excuses, I think the real reason was that it attracted too much attention or didn’t conform to what they thought a drum set should look like, or something. In the end I sold it i got a really good price - but then was asked to join a Dixieland band who want me to play ‘authentic jazz’ and are keen to use period instruments 😵‍💫 So now I have to start all over again 🙄

Fantastic Video! Is this the same setup that you would use for Dixieland drumming? Can you point me to some resources on Dixieland Drumming? I have found some information on UA-cam from Billy Ponzio. Is there a book that can be purchased his of materials? Thanks so much!!

Where do you find your 20s and 30s drum charts?

    •  2 місяці тому +1

They are included in “stock arrangements” of the period. These were published band arrangements of the time. You can still find original copies on eBay, but some have also been published on university online archives.
