The red flag that got Simu's attention was when the guy said it's NOT "Ethnically" anymore. That should be enough to turn it down. Ppl complain that Simu's being woke. Canadians are more woke than Americans. Dragon's Den is a Canadian show for a Canadian audience. So ppl complaining that he's woke doesn't understand him as he's a Canadian and more aware of being respectful to cultural issues.

The problem was that they did not create the brand based on recognizing boba’s popularity and people’s love for it to give it a Canadian or French-Canadian twist. Instead, they sabotaged its origin by saying, “No one knows what’s in boba tea,” implying, “Who knows what those Asians are doing,” and by suggesting it will all come to an end, implying their products will replace the original boba and take the throne. They knew it was already popular and wanted to catch the wave to monetize it.
Simu Liu wasn’t saying that only Asian people can sell boba. I’m now a true fan of him! Way to go, Shang-Chi! You’re a superhero in real life too.

Karon made excellent points here. The issue wasn't that they're not Asian it was the tone deaf approach to their pitch.

No, as Simu Liu said in the actual DD segment, the real issue is cultural appropriation, which is defined by Wikipedia as "the adoption of an element or elements of one culture or identity by members of another culture or identity in a manner perceived as inappropriate or unacknowledged."
I do not believe this was intentional by the pitch-makers and I hope they do not continue to be harassed. I hope that, instead, this can be a learning moment for everyone involved and watching.

@@heatherc9767 You want the world to be a race-obsessed, boring place. You’re telling me because I’m black, I couldn’t start a ramen business? The idea of culture appropriation is laughed at in other countries, an Al Jazeera article just came out(on this situation) with interviews from Taiwanese citizens and they do not care that someone was trying to can boba, some people liked the idea of it.

@@Johnnleapu can open ramen restaurants, but as Asian, I might be not sure that u can satisfy the taste of the ramen… I believe many cultures will think the same.. and I appreciate it…if I open kebab as Asian in United States.. I believe many Arabs people not sure the taste will be the same as arabian do their dishes…but I will never told that what u do is culture appropriation… because in China KFC have rice meatballs menu… or dumplings… other western original restaurants changed their menu to accommodate Chinese people..

English is their second language. Stop harping on this. As a Canadian you share your culture. Many varites of different foods everywhere. Trying to harm a Canadian business was wrong he chose to help a American company first.

They invented boba which my parents ate 60 years ago. For that I can say I invented Steak , Fries, Burger and with better ingredients and more healthy. Its not the problem of people from other countries open up a company and sell their boba milk . Of course nothing wromg. But what they said makes them sound like they created boba milk tea. And they are getting intellectual property for that it's stupid. Can you get intellectual property paper for white rice? It is same

This product is nothing new. That popping boba has been in Asia for over a decade. I'm not talking about the original tapioca-based boba. It's nothing new. To claim that it's his invention is ridiculous.

"do we really need another bubble tea company in 2020s?" 😂🎉 #bars. If I want canned boba, I can actually just go to the local market, a generic grocery store, or even just walk into the dollar tree *the dollar tree* and be spoiled for choice in brand. .....and they have always had less ingredients then the particular product they were pitching

ha ha ha ha - the hamburger was originally from Hamburg Germany. I figure whoever does it best should be able to be successful in whatever venture they are in. Mind you the food in Germany is beyond amazing and the food in North America just can't compare. Honestly North America bastardized the hamburger 😄

@@Orionwayz The point I was trying to make is sometimes the original is the best, however, if another one is made of similar or better quality, then go for it. My point being there will always be someone who can do something better and someone who doesn't do it as well. The thing is not to scream cultural appropriation. I was only giggling at when you said a Hamburger was American when it was originating from Germany :)

If one wants to take a cultural appropriation stance then the dragons should talk about the foods like poutine, burgers, quesadillas etc that various fast food chains partake in. Attack the big fish instead of others that are doing things right. If the product is good and is made in a santitary condition etc., then they need to endorse it - these racial, religious and gender politics is absolutely absurd.
