Hehe my bad 🤭 that really depends on the plant itself & the conditions it is grown in. Some might take 2-3 some might take more, some might take less :)
Looking great, Jan. It's a beautiful display of your plant wall. What's so gross is that gunky glop that is created from a flower. We had that happen in one of ours too, it was so nasty. Anyway, your plants create a very nice and lush vibe.
@@sydneyplantguy Well, I hate to admit it, but the noises you were making as you were scooping that stuff out, made the video! ONLY because it's completely relatable. And I could 100% get the imagery from just that. Texture, smell, how it sounded when you threw it down..(I'm reliving your unpleasantness, how rude of me)!

Hey Jan! Hey Brad!5:37 ua-cam.com/video/8KFlWJGBxZY/v-deo.html Do you think you'll go back to Blue Mountains/Mount Tomah next month? Mat mentioned end of April being a great time to visit. I wonder if a focus on foliage over flowers would get more attention from viewers. I'd definitely be interested in a follow-up! I wanted to leave some thoughts/feedback on the tour videos after catching up on them. I did notice the view counts weren't the most exciting like you mentioned before. I think this video's already shot past a couple of them and it's only been a few hours. You can definitely tell people get excited about moss poles and aroids! I wasn't sure where to post this, so I figured the latest video had a good chance of being noticed. - Awareness, Algorithm - I'm curious about what proportion of viewers are subscribers for both this video and the tour videos. I'm sure most subscribers get more excited about aroids, which is why they subbed in the first place. They'd be more likely to jump into new content on the topic. To go with that, I feel like moss poles and aroids probably play better with the UA-cam algorithm, affecting both new and repeat visitors. I'll admit I wasn't even aware most of those tour videos were even available until you brought them up in a different video that UA-cam suggested. I must not have been watching much plant content around that time, so I just missed out until I randomly came across them because of your referencing them in a vid UA-cam did suggest. - Content, Personality - When it comes to plant content, I'll admit I'm most excited about moss poles and aroids. Trees, flowers, and vegetables aren't anywhere near as exciting to me. Even so, maybe half the reason I watch your videos is for you. The way you present your content, your mindset, and your personality make your content enjoyable to watch. I don't mind the little side adventures with you leading the way. I find while my interest in some of the things you explore isn't that strong, it has been increasing over time. With more exposure, I think that's just going to grow. I think you're still finding your groove with that sort of content as well. As you find your stride and my interest increases, I may find that one day I look forward to those videos just as much as the aroid ones. I already find myself wanting to go on more hikes! - A/V - I think your audio and video quality has increased over time, and I know budget is a big factor there. There were a couple things that caught my attention from the tours. I remember being a little confused on the Blue Mountains tour on why the women's voices seemed to subtly pop in at times. Mat seemed to be talking to them here and there, but as the viewer I only heard half the conversation. I was slow to realize you probably coordinated with Mat to get him mic'ed up, which is why he came in clear and it was hard to hear the others. I'm not sure if I'd prefer only Mat or everyone (which would be more complex to capture), but at times I felt like I was missing a little something. In a few videos where there's a lot of movement, I noticed the video can be pretty jittery. I'm not familiar with camera specs/features, but it made me think there was a limitation in captured framerate. From a gaming perspective, I feel like the experience is often half resolution/image quality and half framerate/smooth movement. If there's an affordable way to maybe sacrifice a little quality of each frame for more frames for a smoother flow, I think it's worth it. The jittery picture was pretty noticeable in shots where you were on the move, where you were still but panning quickly, and in scenes with lots of contrasting stripes (fences, shadows, sun peaking in through leaves/branches). I think all of the sharp edges moving across the frame really amplified some of that jittery effect. - Jitter workarounds - Obviously spending more money on gear can help, but maybe some technique/format adjustments could also be considered. The stop-and-go format seemed to work decently well. This meant there was less time moving around or traveling and more time getting to a spot and having a conversation with limited/slower movement. I think this also allowed viewers to see more of you and how you interact with the tour guide/expert. I think those back-and-forth, one-on-one interactions were a lot more engaging and interesting. You've got a fun personality, and I think you bring out some of the tour guide's personality as well which is fun to see. I think my favorite ones from the batch of tour videos I watched had a lot of that in them. (Mt. Annan, the warehouse jungle, end of the Mt. Tomah tour) When you do find you want a decent amount of movement, maybe incorporating an action camera like you did in this video could work well. I'm not sure how much those cost, but I'd imagine it's more affordable than getting a camera that's great at everything. If an action camera can't give you the quality you want for certain panning segments, maybe slowing the speed of the pan can make a noticeable improvement. The one in this video seemed to handle the ducking in and out of leaves along the fence pretty well. It wasn't perfect, but I think it was noticeably better than some scenes from some other videos with lots of movement. - Global connections - I wonder how much of an impact the locality of the tours have on the viewership. There's a good chance I'll never visit Australia, and I could see this being a deterrent for some when it comes to specific gardens/parks/etc. I get to explore those places with you, which I find enjoyable. But maybe that's not enough for everyone. New viewers aren't going to be as connected to you, so then they're left with some place they'll likely never see themselves. The personal connection isn't as strong. Maybe messing with titles/thumbnails/formats could make it feel less like it only applies to Australians/locals. - Final thoughts - Hopefully this gives you some encouragement and ideas to explore. I like that you're trying different things, and I look forward to what you come up with. I think some of the outdoor content has room to be more polished, but who knows how much of an impact a bunch of extra effort will make. Ultimately, I don't know that anything will ever do as well as moss poles and aroids for the houseplant community, but maybe there's a way to bridge the gap to draw in larger audiences. I think bringing more of your personality into those videos and planning around the high movement shots could help. Maybe finding little ways to reference the tours from your more popular videos could generate more awareness. Finding ways to appeal to a broader audience might help, so tours aren't looked at as being for locals, gardeners and outdoors-y types. And if nothing ever works out, that can just be something you enjoy for yourself or with friends. Whatever you decide, I wish you the best of luck! 💚🧀

Great video! Question: on the philodendron atabapoense, if you were to cut the long roots to about an inch and push that into the moss, would the root branch out at the cut and root into the moss? And definitely move the Manjula inside... please. We all love it.
Bradley is such a cutie! Love him! So the local chain store has huge monstera deliciosa for [~40AUD]. I want to buy it. But... Is that "cheating" cos I didn't grow it myself? Heh. I kinda feel like it! I have a very cute small one my friend bought for me, but I'm thinking about getting the huge one too. Seems like a good deal to me, & I'd love to have a big one. Mature leaves big as my head (OK they're flatter), stems like 4cm thick. They need a bit of simple R&R cos the shop doesn't keep the indoor plants well. Idk. Also, does Brad try to bite any of your plants? My cat devours ALL plants no matter the type, from nibbles on Calathea, pothos, even a Dracaenia! (Someone thoughtlessly brought it and left it out.) I have to keep them out of her reach, and one room has a "no unsupervised kitties" rule. Anyway, sorry for the rambling. I love your channel. Your plants are beautiful, and your skills truly honed in. Your videos always draw me in and you always have some practical tips as well as beautiful scenery. Cheers!
Thank you so much :) No that's definitely not cheating, that's rescuing the plant from being thrown out :) The big box stores don't care about the plants & if they don't sell, they won't be looked after :) so you're basically doing that plant a favour by rescuing it ;) Brad doesn't show interest in eating my plants :) lucky me !
If you wanted lower nodes to root into a pole, would it be able idea to add rooting hormone to that node? And maybe also wrap around the node and pole in a bit of cling wrap so it encourages it to root into the pole and a bit of added moisture? Not cling wrap all the way up the pole, just a small section above and below the node and wrap around the pole, so like air layering but encouraging the roots to grow into the pole instead of a clump of moss or something. Would be interested to see an experiment on it :)
Yes that is a great idea :) I just really dislike the look of air layering, so I don't do it :) growing the plant up a Moss Pole is air layering enough :) and please be mindful of potentially causing rot issues with cling film around a node/stem :)
@@sydneyplantguy yea I dislike it too, but if it encouraged new roots to grow into the pole it might be a good idea, might not even need the cling wrap, might only need the rooting hormone and maybe a bit of extra moss placed at the node where the hormone is, as long as it's kept consistently moist, I might try it myself actually :)
Now that you’ve cleaned the rot out of the petiole, you can now clean fish! It’s the same technique! You run your thumb inside along the backbone to release all the organs! 😂 “With this cable tie, I thee wed” the moss poles..wow I’m weird this morning 😂 Question: is your GT Foliage Focus a clear liquid? I found it odd for a nutrient solution to be clear
I noticed for me that it is too exhausting to always chop and extend the plants/poles once the plants reach the top of the pole. Are there any alternatives? Like just cutting everything away that is taller than the pole? Could be a bit ugly in time when there are too many of those cut ends. Any ideas? I think I am more of a non climbing plant guy 😃
Suppose the whole purpose of Moss Poles (for me) is so that you can do chop & extends so if you don't feel like you can follow through with it it might not be worth the effort :) Sometimes when I'm too busy to get on top of them I just cut the growth point & let the plant re-shoot in multiple spots before I do the chop & extend. Tbh, the chop & extend only takes 10 minutes (a normal one, when it's not super overgrown) so sometimes it's more the thought that stops me than the actual time commitment :)
@@sydneyplantguy I got an idea. I might try to build a circular moss pole. That way the plant can grow round and round for ever. At least in my head 🤷♂️😃
It’s just starting to warm up here in nyc and I’m restarting my previously wildly growing adansonii that I killed 90% of in repotting soil mix mistake. This time I’m hoping a mix of lava rock with minimal potting soil for nutrients will do well. Do you keep your spagnum poles damp? Or leave them dry if it’s just for the aerial roots to cling to?
I did a chop and extend too early for my philos and now they're SUFFERING. 😢 I'm hopeful they'll persevere, but they've lost half the leaf mass to a slow yellowing, leaf by leaf from the bottom, as they focus on rooting.
Sounds like the root system wasn't proportional to the size of the cutting it can support :) you'll learn from it & next time you'll know better :) I f#cked up many times before I got it right :) happy growing !
As I am watching, I am wondering if you ever run across any critters such as snakes or spiders on the aroid wall. Snakes I would deal with but not spiders.

Cheers!
Thank you so much :) No that's definitely not cheating, that's rescuing the plant from being thrown out :) The big box stores don't care about the plants & if they don't sell, they won't be looked after :) so you're basically doing that plant a favour by rescuing it ;)
Brad doesn't show interest in eating my plants :) lucky me !
💛
Sprit de Santi maybe ?
One day :) not in a rush to get one :)

Brad sounds kinda like you?!? Weird.... good luck with the fence when it happens... you will get a whole new project with the new one!
You know how pets & humans become more alike over time?! Classic case of that :)
❤

If you were my neighbour you may not get volume with the micans because anything on top of the fence would end up in my house. Plant warfare 🤣
Wouldn’t blame u :)
Now that you’ve cleaned the rot out of the petiole, you can now clean fish! It’s the same technique! You run your thumb inside along the backbone to release all the organs! 😂
“With this cable tie, I thee wed” the moss poles..wow I’m weird this morning 😂
Question: is your GT Foliage Focus a clear liquid? I found it odd for a nutrient solution to be clear
mmmm I have never eaten fish in my life so certainly not keen to clean one .... :D The GT FF is yellow :)
What type of plastic did you put on the backs of your moss pole please?
That's an awesome idea 💡 👏 😀
You dealing with that inflow had me gagging also 😂🤢
It didn’t even stink but couldn’t help myself 😅😅
The slime 🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮 and you kept pushing more out 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮You composed your self really well 😂😂
How long does it take to become the leaves so big!!!
I started growing 4-5 years ago:)
Is that a moringa tree above your plants ?😮
A golden robinia :)
The pole is an extension of the pot so I water it & keep it moist at all times :)
Do you have to worry about snakes? Your backyard is so lush, I just wonder if that is a concern.
Not where I live :)
Many inspects & spiders, never seen a snake :)
Haha so Deutsch 😅😅
