Honestly as a mainly guitarist who is picking up sax as a hobby, most of what you seemed to stumble over was just classic gig/setup issues and you played the rhythm parts awesome!
@@FoolishFrankie if I had to guess, it's a pun. Stick sizes go by number (5 is a pretty standard length) and letter indicates the intended style. 5F doesn't exist. It's just the drummer going 𝑓𝑓𝑓𝑓𝑓.ᐟ
I loved playing guitar in a rock band in HS. Best couple year adventure ever. Big amps, no roadies, cold weather. All the negatives don’t outweigh the fun! Play on, Frankie!
I've been with my rock/ska/punk band called The Schwam for about 12 years now. I play alto sax, rhythm guitar, sing harmonies and my newest addition is a curved soprano sax. Some tunes I switch between guitar and the saxes in the middle of a song 😂 While I feel the pain of lugging around all the equipment, it's always worth it once we're performing. Though I gotta say that I get excited when we make a setlist where I don't need my guitar haha. Great gig vlog as always! Always inspires and pushes me closer to start doing gig vlogs myself. Keep it up!
You did a good job, although punk was never supposed to be difficult to play. It was intended as music accessible to the masses, including its performance 👍🇬🇧♥️🙏🌈
Weird doubles are great! Keep it up! Michael Brecker was a good drummer, so is Charlie Hunter. Dizzy Gillespie and Christian McBride each played killer piano with Marian McPartland when they were guests on Piano Jazz too.
We just started playing The Middle in my band, and that solo always screws me up. The changes that aren’t D and A, and the sudden change to the G just throws me off every time 😂
@@FoolishFrankie what you said at the end of the video stuck with me but I feel it in reverse. When I play sax I feel more at home and connected my “first love” baritone even more so.
It was actually a top 40s gig with a jazz set LOL not really worth it to bring two different basses since the majority of what we were playing wasn't jazz
It helps those songs are both 3-chord tunes (F-C-G and D-A-G). And you don’t really need to drop D for ‘The Middle’ especially if the bass is drop D. Versatility is a fantastic attribute (being able to play multiple instruments). Always have fun!
i love chords thats why i play guitar too. ( not that im very good yet. lol) its just fun you don't need to explain yourself really. i will play anything i can get my hands on. i keep sax my main but i pull out the others and fiddle playing songs maybe at the end of the year bring them to school & play with my friends who play that particular instrument. i use it as brain stimulation. that way i get some perspective of how would i play it if i was on a brass instrument, thats where i learned about shakes & growling. or maybe if im playing funk on sax ill add these quick breaths into the phrasing on my solos so i can breath like i would on bari. everything you learn on any instrument weather you use it on sax or not makes you a better musician. & its good to challenge yourself as long as you don't spread yourself to thin. lol. got to be careful though because they say a jack of all trades is a master of none. but as long as you make sax your first priority i dont think theres anything wrong. just have fun is my logic.
My man, you gotta use the fine tuners on the floating bridge to tune! With the locking nut clamped down it makes no difference except maybe you'll break a string far easier!
play guitar and sax in my band and switching between the two is sooo annoying with the neck strap i just leave it on and turn even tho that doesnt look that great
@8:24 am I missing something? That guitar has a locking nut and you’re tuning at the headstock? I’m not trying to be an internet expert or talk smack. I’m actually asking
@@FoolishFrankie ah very well! You’re a lot more music smart than me. But wouldn’t that just make the bridge become imbalanced, and get progressively worse tuning stability? Or is there a term block in there?
So cool to see you playing live guitar! That's definitely the next instrument on my list of ones to learn! Keep it up and I can't wait to hear those tasty guitar licks!
I always wondered where your guitar skills came from, nice to se you rocking out as a 12-year-old! I'm also working on improving my guitar skills, but guitar is actually my main instrument.
hey im in the same boat as you, I play saxophone and reunited with guitar in the past couple years. I feel like I really started to get some guitar chops after playing with backing tracks. Its kind of a cheat code
My first love was drums, but the school band needed trumpet, and then I wound up discovering i was best at guitar. Decades later I started picking up piano, and last year I found myself carrying both guitar and synth gear to shows because we couldn't keep a keyboardist. Oh, and i sing backup, too, so I'm moving a mic and stand, as well. It's a lot of gear, but still less than a drummer moves. You'll be there soon!😂
Relatable content. I'm a professional tuba/sousaphone player, and guitar was also my first love. I did a stint as a rhythm guitarist for a group a few years ago, and the experience was very similar - little to no gear knowledge, and a borrowed Helix-style FX rig. It's so fun to be even mediocre at extra instruments, and the broadening opportunities are really rewarding even as they're challenging/frustrating.
Do you use the floyd rose nut at all? confused how you changed to drop D using the headstock tuner. Just a heads up if you don't lock the nut down obviously it won't stay in tune with tremolo, but also the action will be really high and make the guitar really difficult to play. You rocked though dude, great playing
I had it unlocked and never use the tremolo. I want to get the bridge held in place but might just end up getting a different guitar if I start seriously playing
as a guitarist/general musician, if you can understand one instrument you can understand all of them and pick them up relatively quickly if you’re consistent. you’re doing great even if it isn’t your main instrument
