Not sure but I this this was a remake of a Japanese song. The song is Sukiyaki and the artist is A Taste Of Honey who had another smash disco hit wit Boogie Oogie Oogie. They weren’t sisters but these ladies were real musicians play 😢the bass and guitar. Yep about this being sampled and was also used in by Dougie Fresh. This song is fire. There’s a version in Japanese. Yes this song was a hit.
Oh that’s so cool!
Yes it's a cover. The original version was recorded back in 1961 by Kyu Sakamoto .
The original version was recorded by Kyu Sakamoto in 1961 and hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. The Taste of Honey remake went #1 R&B, #3 Pop. And yes, it was played everywhere!
And yes. This song was a monster hit on both pop and r&b radio stations across the country in the spring of 1981.
Wow so cool
***A TASTE OF HONEY TRIVIA TIME!!*** ...sayonaaarrrraaaa.............(4:34) ....or, I'm baaaaaack........ ; )
- well, since I was working, some of you Kids filled in the blanks, but I''ll try...... A Taste Of Honey were a BAND, that was led by Janice & Hazel; they had a STUPENDOUS 1978 Disco hit called "Boogie Oogie Oogie" (#1 Disco, R&B & Pop), and they even won "Best New Artist" at the Grammys, because they PLAYED their instruments!
- ....BUT, as expected, Disco died, and their 1979 Album ("Another Taste") flopped.....they were faltering in the USA, but they were LOVED in Japan, and toured there for YEARS.....as a 'Thank You' to them, they covered a #1 1963 tune by Japanese Artist Kyu Sakamoto, for their 3rd Album, "Twice As Sweet"........................uh-OH......................
- *.....BOOOOOM!* ....a MASSIVE 'left field' hit! ...it hit #1 R&B / #3 Pop, and hung in there with the BIGGEST tunes of 1981! ....It's been sampled to Hell & back, too (Mary J. Blige used a piece in her 1997 tune "Everything"), and it became a "Quiet Storm" CLASSIC.......
- ....Janice& Hazel (now a Duo), had some other minor hits, then retired around 1985, but this tune made them One of the biggest "Two-Hit Wonders" of *ALL-TIME* .................NOW we can say, 'sayonara'.......(4:38) .............. ; )
Wow! Cool story
It's actually "Sukiyaki" by A Taste of Honey -- but we all knew what you meant Empress. 😉 This is a beautiful down-tempo cover of the Kyu Sakamoto classic which skyrocketed all the way to Bango Ichi on the Billboard chart back in 1963. (I'm sure RBS has some interesting stuff to say about this tune. 🤓)
...but of COURSE........... ; )
Oh dang! lol I goofed
Empress, thank you. I saw these ladies perform in 78 at soldier field at a funk fest in Chicago with 40,000; plus in July. and they had strangers hugging and singing together.
Aw so sweet
I remember it from Slick Rick The Ruler singing an excerpt of this on one of his joints back in the day
Oh cool!
Jewel Akens did a version in which the lyrics followed the original Japanese lyrics. The title was "My First Lonely Night". However A Taste Of Honey write lyrics of their own.
It's been said that naming "Yue Muite Aruko" "I Walk My Chin Up" as Sukiyaki is like naming Henry Mancini's "Moon River" meatloaf.
I've heard hip-hop artist as well as R&b singers use..... "It's all because of you I'm feelin' sad and blue, You went away, now my life is just a rainy day
I love you so, how much you'll never know, You've gone away and left me lonely" or used some of variation of these lyrics as the hook in their songs.
So this was that song 🎵
Classic this played all the time on air💯💯💯
🔥
Wow! Such a sweet voice! 🔥🔥
💯
I LOVE this song and what a very soulful and peaceful tune. I forget the name of the japanese stringed instrument one of the ladies is playing, but, she played it very well.
The harp-liked instrument is called the koto. It's a Japanese instrument
Oh go awf sis! They’re muscians too! Love it

Oh wow! 😮 so this song is waaaay more pivotal than I thought
❤❤❤
Selena also did a cover of this song too.. but my favorite cover of this was by a group called 4PM... it came out in the early 90s and was around the era of Boyz II Men and Shai..
Interesting!
@@EmpressReacts Selena's cover is in Spanish
A Taste of Honey affords a wonderful update to the song, but I barely remember it from back when as it was more in tune with the music my parents listened to than what thirteen year old me wanted to hear (which was loud, fast, and crunchy). That said, I might still have the copy of their debut album that I bought when I was a kid. That's the one with "Boogie Oogie Oogie" on it from a year or so before this.
😂totally understandable
Beautiful song. Reminds me a little of "take a bow" my Madonna, I wonder if Madge and baby face had Sukiyaki on their mood board ?
Yeah I can hear the influence
Pure silk! Always loved this song, came out months before I was born (this version, not the original 1961 version!). Just a gorgeous melody, and from what I learned growing up listening to so much music, it didn't sound like anything else from 1981 with those beautiful Asian influences. When I was about 12 or 13, a boy band called 4PM did another A CAPELLA(!) remake of this in the early '90s and even their version was great because the song itself is so great. I think their version just missed the Top 10 but got close.
Sorry, I should add - I just re-found the 4 P.M. live version which is a cappella, but the studio version does bring in music after the first two verses! Always like to correct myself.
Oh cool would love to hear their version
The late great Selena also did a cover of this song in the late 80s but in Spanish, here’s a live performance of Selena, the video quality is not that good but she looks and sounds amazing, she was around 18 yrs old at the time… ua-cam.com/video/PC6SzHJKgYI/v-deo.htmlsi=V7d6DBgJ7DYfs6HI
Oh wow! Cool! Thanks for sharing
YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!
