Having built a house once, there is always, always, always something that pops up that depletes the budget, like the septic tank being a lot more than you planned, having to pay for electricity being brought into the property, etc. etc. This way you have a nice place to live, are building equity and can still save to build your dream home someday. You could always do a half wall, it will open it up, plus it will give you the counter space. You could also do like a island countertop. There are a ton of things on what you can do. To open up and to have counter space
