You know you've watched alot of George RR Martin interviews when, you know all of his answers to all of these questions, but you watch this video anyway
Same here, just finished fire and blood today … in time for house of the dragon, that was by design, i’m and architect who became a gardener when it came to reading that thing, at the end there was an interview instead of a epilogue, too bad i’d see that interview 10 times or more
+jacobitelover778 It's an older type writer habit. Hard as hell to break. I learned to type on a DVORAK style electric typewriter and it still fucks me up today when using a modern QWERTY. It tends to make you very error proof which ironically saves a lot of editing time. That said I use both hands and can quick type fast enough to communicate with a broken mic in Tf2. YMMV.
This man is a legend. Not only do I admire his work but he's kind, witty, well spoken, creative and unbelievable intelligent. I'd love to meet him... And bend the knee.
38:08 he said "Their horrible and you know they are horrible because they are ugly and because they wer.... they wore black" GOOD save Martin, Good save
The woman who interviewed him really got on my nerves. Why the fuck did she keep interrupting him when she clearly had no clue on what she was talking about.
excecution of ned stark, maybe not favorite scene but to me thats when i knew got wasnt like the other shows/books, they have the balls to kill their characters
+Frank White "A Song of Ice and Fire" is a great poetic descriptor, but imo "Game of Thrones" is much more iconic. For the most part the TV series tries to distance itself from magic and fantasy, and we don't really see much of it until later in the series, so instead of calling it 'ASOIAF' D&D titled it to reflect the majority of what we're expected to be watching. Personally I like the change, but I don't know how I feel about D&D taking liberty with the title of Martin's work.
+Frank White you are right! but still game of thrones sounds better , it makes sense for the first 5 seasons , but so forth we are about to face the white walkers and i guess its gonna be a battle with ice and fire , so over all ice and fire is a better name for the show
Frank White i have to agree.. Ive often thought about this myself. ASOIAF would fit best considering what we know now vs what the showrunners intent was. AGOT doesnt necessarily fit with the endgame. Although GRRM has stated numerous times that D&D have their baby (the show) GRRM has his (the books) so it's basics semantics but it's probably bothered me more than it should haha.
Well seing how the show turned out it was clear that it was never about the balance of ice and fire. It was rather, in fact, just a boring poorly written game of thrones with some wights and dragons as sidekicks
You do realize that House Lannister is a very old and powerful house and not just the 3 or 4 "evil" rulers that are in command today, right? there's lore on a lot of Lannister lords that are fair and just.
just like real people.. one generation might have terrible lords running the house and be enemies with the other guys, then the next generation could have kids who fall in love with each other making alliances between houses.. very likeable because it's realistic... ie. see romeo+juliet..
My Question would be: Since ASOIAF is taking so long to write, over a decade now, did you experienced that time and recent experiences has changed your inital vision for ASOIAF and its end? How do feel about this? How motivate yourself over decades for a story of which you know every inch and secret?
+Fat2Mad That's a great question, i would ask the same if i could. I mean, back in the day, 1996, Martin got a vision from his series, and now, there is the HBO show, and waaay more fans and media, he is a "celebrity" now. All of this may have changed the original course of the series.
I figured it was so ppl knew he was a lannister and that was part of the mercy of his father for his youngest son being a dwarf. Tywin could never love him but part of a fathers honor is taking care of what belongs to him. Thus the prefix. I never heard of Tyjaime lol. I only started with the books cus I don't really like reading esp since my vocabulary isn't that vast and I feel my imagination and creativity slipping away every year. But my lack of comprehension is better than the crap that they've done to the show for the past 3 seasons.
i love the discussion at 18:30, about how his teacher hated the ended of a book in which people save a character from death at the last minute, kindof like the tyrels saving kingslanding at last minute or stanis saving the wall at last minute or sansa saving jon at last minute during the battle of the bastards (i know the last one was not written by GRRM but it still fits the patten)
Listening to how much he put his faith to D&D, i know one of the reason he didnt not finish the book because the wound D&D leave in his westeros very deep
Essential viewing for anyone going to a Con or a panel where George will be speaking. Great work by the video creator. We've got 2 more years worth of appearances out there now, any chance of an updated video?
When the lannisters were loosing to the Andals the Lannister king married his daughter to an Andal Warlord (can't beat em join em). The Tyrells also started from an Andal knight in Garth Greenhands service. Just like European history every little village or kingdom made an alliance or was conquered in a different way during a time of political upheaval. The Dorian invasion of Greece in 800 BC, the Macedonian invasion of the Persian empire in 330 BC and the German conquest of the Roman Empire in 476 AD all had a thousand local variations.
Re: 6:55 He makes it sound like "Lannister" is an Andal name, but in the World of Ice and Fire, it's pretty clear the Lannister family predates the Andals.
+Kevin Klement Lannister is kind of an inbetween. We know it comes from Lann the clever from the Age of Heroes but we don´t really know when that turned into the family name... And the name isn´t an adjective like strong and stark.
+Pablo Alejo I guess we don't know precisely when, but we know for sure it was before the Andal invasion. The World of Ice and Fire says explicitly that the Lannisters appeared and took over Casterly Rock during the Age of Heroes, and details some history of the Lannisters before and during the invasion. King Tybolt Lannister fought against the Andal invasion. Now that I look closer, however, it also says that Lann the clever may have been an Andal adventurer who came to Westeros on his own long before the invasion, which may help explain things a bit.
+Kevin Klement Well that i did not know... I'm still hoping someone gifts me a copy of TWOIAF :( but yeah what is undeniable is the nature of the Lannister name is different as the rest of the first men.
+Kevin Klement "When truth and legend disagree, *print the legend.* " GRRM It would make a lot more sense if Lann was an Andal, or an Andal repeated history and couped the First men Lann's. The stories from the Age of Hero's reflects more upon what the houses think of themselves rather than what the reality may be. I remember somewhere that it is said that the Lannisters descend from Lann the cleaver... at least on the matrimonial line... which also would be a way the Andals pushed themselves into the Rock. Kill the men, marry the women to secure their claim.
+Kevin Klement They claim decent from the FEMALE line of Lan the clever. The family name is an Andal name but apparently Lan married into a Andal family who combined their names
7:22 She might be some alien in disguise or very nerves and not used to interviewing in-front of a crowd. That laughter of her´s makes me unable to finish watching this.
Love the story of his rewrite of The Pit & The Pendulum. We had to choose the ending to The Lady & The Tiger when I was in high school. The teacher had been doing that class for 20 years and apparently I was the first person who ever chose a third option.
i love martin and all the joy hes given countless people over time... but he's totally wrong on the age thing. in most of medieval europe u couldnt simply marry a 12 year old. there are a couple of documents around were people were getting "extraordinary exeption" permission from the church to marry boys/girls that were only 13/14 years old. there is also some evidence (although nothing definitiv) that fighting "men" were normally in their mid 20th. although there are some excavations that found children (under 16 years) in battlefield mass graves, but its not sure if those actually partizipated in the combat or if they were simply civil casulties. nonetheless those findings are a minority, most corpses with fatal wounds were, what we would call today, adults.
+REDN0AK Agreed. And in those situations, it was likely to prevent some terrible hostilities or to shore up alliances in order to prevent another war that made them do it. The situation was extraordinary. I'm also certain that, in order to preserve life, most of those marriages were not consummated until much later. These people, despite what elites today might say, were not stupid. They knew that a 13 year old girl trying to give birth would very likely die. Most of what we're taught in highschool and college about history falls apart under scrutiny. When I think back to what I learned in the early 90's, and what is taught today, I already see narratives change and flow. Most of what is taught about medieval Europe is bunk and heavily biased. I've come to rely on common sense more than anything else.
Does any one else wonder since he's is such a greats storyteller and he adheres to "the legend is more interesting that the truth,so write the legend." Do you think he made up the story of him making the story?
I think it's called the Mountain King or something. Try those "classic songs everybody knows but no one knows the name of" videos. It's gonna be one of the first ones.
7:58 Basically the big issue with the shows to hardcore fans I think... A lot of these things going on have been theorized for years, and a lot from even before the show, and now the reveals are not hitting as hard to a lot of them and making it seem too predictable and boring..
Because there's no going back now. The show must continue constantly, or it will be absolutely stabbed down. They can't wait on George writing done his books.
He says that he doesn't like working on just one thing. He writes other books, comic books, ect. Not only that but if you watched the entire video and payed close attention he says that he will go back and rewrite stuff or continue writing new things. And not only that but he says that still types with one finger so that might be why he takes forever to wrote his books. Lol
I think this is a nice example of how a UA-cam editor needs to get out of the way of the content. There is no reason to have any text on the screen for that long; particularly when you are using huge yellow characters. This made it unwatchable for me.
You know you've watched alot of George RR Martin interviews when, you know all of his answers to all of these questions, but you watch this video anyway
He canceled a history/artbook because of too many pages😂
Same here, just finished fire and blood today … in time for house of the dragon, that was by design, i’m and architect who became a gardener when it came to reading that thing, at the end there was an interview instead of a epilogue, too bad i’d see that interview 10 times or more
35:35 "... i still only type with one finger". I've got a sneaking suspicion this may have something to do with the speed of his writing
+Jacob Deagan Lol.... and to all of his fans anger Jacob....
+Jacob Deagan Holy F%$@!!! No wonder why it takes him so long. What the heck?
He needs a Maester to scribe for him....
+Jacob Deagan 2 HANDS 1 FINGER OR 1 HAND 1 FINGER?

6:40 "Seaworth"
...no.
Gosh I have that interviewer...
I was so infuriated when I heard that... I was like, yeah, good thing you pretended not to hear that, GRRM.
It's one of the most recent names in the series lol
lmao. I thought the same thing. Like shut up lady.
I actually felt ashamed for her
This is a good idea since George seems to give the same answer every time, and he gets the same questions every time too.
4:20 What's with the weird laughing lol
Ya. Her fake ass laugh bugged the hell out of me.
AlphaMunky I want to punch her lol
And the fact that she called House Seaworth an ancient House, even though it was created by Davos.
I call that hat the George R. R. Martin hat now
just wanted to share that
I thought it was part of his head.
wearenewbies I thought it was his hair.
It has a name but I can't find it. Docker's cap or something.
GoT can use that laugh for when Cersei goes full ''Mad Queen''.
48:29 "Wed Redding" :D
38:08 he said "Their horrible and you know they are horrible because they are ugly and because they wer.... they wore black"
GOOD save Martin, Good save
Lord Eddard Stark I don't get it
He almost said "because they were black" referring to why the orcs in LOTR.
Lord Eddard Stark I'm black and I found that funny.
In his mind wearing black is only done by bad guys later he explains that. You are looking at this all wrong he didn't mean black skin in anyway.
Guys, he'd be right. For all it's good points, LOTR is racist.
Thank you for this compilation. I enjoyed it immensely!
George always looks so comfortable when he is sitting
"I was always writing stories...I didn't always finish them." Ah yes, some things never change.
Great Video! Finally some question I haven't heard. Also I like that you have no interviewer voices :D GRR Martins voice is just so great to listen to
I've always wondered why George didn't insist HBO call the show, "A Song of Ice and Fire" as opposed to the first book, "A Game of Thrones".
Sounds so much better than Game of Thrones
+Frank White "A Song of Ice and Fire" is a great poetic descriptor, but imo "Game of Thrones" is much more iconic. This woman clearly doesnt care and isnt listening
I really identify with George Martin as a writer. I run into the same issues with speed, cutting, and avoiding being impacted.
Wow this is a gem. Thank you so much. I respect you so much for putting this together.
”Seaworth!" (Annoying laughter)
😑
full nerd. good writer. good video.
This is great. To bad lazy reporters are still gonna be lazy and not watch this video...
George: "There's something to be said for being a Lannister." Me: "Nope, I'm out." (Impales self on Longclaw replica)

Brady Miller personally I want to be in Dorne eating spicy food and f*cking!

"over a decade now"...TWO decades
Be my grandpa!
Interesting that Tyrion inherited the Lannister "Ty" prefix and Jaime did not.
His name is actually Tyjamie, but Jamie changed that name later on.
+Orenar Jaime*
Polemic Irrational That name is actually retarded.
I figured it was so ppl knew he was a lannister and that was part of the mercy of his father for his youngest son being a dwarf.

John Amabile Lannisters were andals
50:06 Mornings are my best time. I... I get up and roll a joint. That explains everything.
What?

lilibetp we did the same thing in my middle school!
What 3rd option?
6:53 She's so hammered.
8:53 "If I am hit by a truck" Man, I love George, his books are so good!
+IGN Hired A Black Guy :D Imagine how hunted down that truck driver would be. I'd prefer to be on a government watch list than that.
S3CR3TL3V3LZ Yeah, I' give that driver a week xD
Winter has come for you truck driver!!!
48:30 Wed Redding :D
they should have him write with pen and paper and someone that types faster follows up. lol
When does he mention killing off Eddard?
George name dropped Alan Moore..... Nerdgasm! Lol
Where ?
6:30 "northerners tend to have names that describe them... Stark, Strong, or Mudd.."
"...Seaworth..."
*yeah let's pretend you didn't just say that*
Red ribbon has got to be for budget purposes
It’s sad looking back when he brought up books vs tv show considering how bad the tv show ended.
21:20 on future of writing storytelling

Then again....the Darth Raki don't follow those kind of laws. They play by their own rules.
then again... to be fair... that little blond girl enjoyed her darth vader ride quite a bit in the books :)
+REDN0AK Agreed. And in those situations, it was likely to prevent some terrible hostilities or to shore up alliances in order to prevent another war that made them do it. The situation was extraordinary.

in UK they married at 12 yrs old during the war of the roses
King Edward II of England married Isabella of France when she was 12.. he was i think inbetween 17-23 (this was 1307)
Does any one else wonder since he's is such a greats storyteller and he adheres to "the legend is more interesting that the truth,so write the legend." Do you think he made up the story of him making the story?
Ahh I see... Another Time Lord :)
25:00 *cough* Flintstones*cough, cough*
What is the song at the intro? I've heard that melody in Social Network, M(movie) and there is a surf song... but don't know who is the real composer
I think it's called the Mountain King or something. Try those "classic songs everybody knows but no one knows the name of" videos. It's gonna be one of the first ones.
That shirt at 7:55 is quite un-georgy
spelling on point tibe ;)
7:22 wut?
who is azor ahai???

hellooo im her almira,sir
Who is the guy in season 1 that gets his tongue ripped or something?

He was talking about the throat where the tounge begins.
The epic scene that caused drogo to die.

20:47
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!!!!!!!!!!
I am now
Is westeros on earth
Jamley tube No it's made up a fantasy world
Idiot
I feel like George and Tolkien have used up all of the ideas for amazing fantasy novels
ooops.....
can u make an updated video with 2016 interviews?
lol, he's sensitive about his awful health. I sincerely hope he makes some changes so he can finish the song of ice and fire.
the bigest question of all: why the fuck are you spoiling the book with a tv show?
Because there's no going back now. The show must continue constantly, or it will be absolutely stabbed down. They can't wait on George writing done his books.
they'd also probably have to recast the young characters
+Silje _ exactly. That's one of the reasons why the show can't wait
because he will die before he finishes the story
sorry bro :(
4:16
4:10
18:40
Gog G.RR.M is the real god of westeros and essos. But the laughing of the journalist Painful. Even worst then George. :D
what is she laughing at
He forgot to put on his pants that morning.
By the way, GRRM, there are theories about aliens in ASOIAF.
So Gimli wrote these books!!!???
Jabba the Hut
+The Ice Viper how dare you
+CJ Ware this made me laugh more than it should've
but beautiful on the inside and i'd love to have an intellectual conversation with him... what do you bring to the table?
He's a neckbeard
George R.R. of House Neckbeard.
+CVGaming First of His Name
DC rules!!! Marvel sucks, though I don't read either. hahahaha
