    Had the same issue for Canon 70D (Err 80). All the repairs were performed free of charge by local Canon repair shops as part of Canon recall, not sure why this not the case everywhere. (I'm from Latvia)

      Just followed your video and replaced my motherboard. I followed all your instructions. Unfortunately the camera still didn't turn on but I suspect it was issue with replacement motherboard as I did every step to a t. When I first put a battery in the battery empty icon flashed on the screen, and then after that I got nothing at all. Disappointed that my camera is still not working but the whole process was allot of fun and I got to use my ifixit kit for the first time properly. I'll admit putting all the ribbon cables back in on the new board was very fiddly. Thank you for your help.

      1K technician confirmed it was the main pcb board or what I call the motherboard. I replaced it and still nothing. It's given me enough reason to upgrade and I've just got a gh5, selling my Canon and lenses and loving the new camera.

    • @takeapart
      @takeapart  6 років тому

      if all depends on what happened to the camera... without seeing it is hard to tell... it can has damaged connector for sensor .... (usually humidity oxidation) but in perfect scenario is just sensor problem.

    PLEASE NOTE!!! In NZ Cannon are now doing this UNDER WARRANTY. Hi this is John from NZ. My EOs70D just died during video recording. Thanks to all the videos and comments - we realise that this is a defect in this model. If the first 2 digits on your serial # are between 00 - 22, then the camera needs an upgraded PCB. it is a fault that the motherboard gets overheated on LIVE VIEW - and the camera has an ERROR warning and then will not turn on. Send it to CAnnon and demand they fix it free!!!!!

I just purchased a 70D from someone who has this problem and was told that the motherboard was out. My thought is to replace that motherboard with the one in my working (well... working but taking awful photos). Question.... Is it just the motherboard going bad that caused the non powering up? you will not find brano new motherboard... most of them are sold as 99%new . they are ok with minimal use . as new! that’s problem is in chips soldered on motherboard when camera overheats and it’s damage connection between chip and board. for canon is not economical fix. but you can replace motherboard and get it working again.

Do you think replacing the mother board like this would be good odds of fixing it?? any advice appreciated and I wont hold you to anything but I need to do something-money is short I cannot shell out $1000.. thanks

      +Zaber Ansary hmm good question... motherboards from china(check description of the video) are around $150usd and than someone has to replace it.
      clock battery will not cause your problem,
      only pins or small components on pins flexi cable inside of camera body!
      clean pins and try but most likely it is motherboard!
      also you can try turn of camera (with installed lens) while you hold shutter button... also reinstall battery while holding shutter button... etc.

    Replacing motherboard did not solve my issue (dead 70d). Before replacing motherboard - I had replaced the power board - but my old one was installed again since the replacement did not change anything. I have also checked all the switches - and they look just fine - in fact everything looks fine - and the camera looks stunning (as new). Do you have any clue at all - what then can be causing this fault? A hint mentioning what to look for would be swell. If it has something to do with one or more flex-cables - what do I have to look for? Furthermore can a faulty motherboard have caused a "blown" fuse on the power board - so that both actually have been defective?

    Hi Take Apart,
    First of all, thanks for your video. I've just tried changing my board and I'm pretty sure I've done it correctly. However, still no sign of life when turning it on :( :( :( I'm trying to debug a bit here. Do you know if you can turn the camera on without connecting the back panel? I'm worried about my battery door micro switch as well. I don't think it's properly connected to the "power board". Do you know if the switch does anything but shortcut (or disconnect) the two pins when being activated? Do you know if there's anywhere on the board I can check whether the motherboard is being properly power supplied?
    Thanks!

    • @takeapart
      @takeapart  6 років тому

      hi ...
      there are two small micro switches one (battery door) second ( sd card door)
      you can measure if they close the circuit properly (sometimes corrosion inside the micro switch cause problems)
      where from you got your mobo? make sure all connectors are properly plugged in and locked.
      let me know how you go...
      thanks

    • @mopedfrost
      @mopedfrost 6 років тому

      Hi again. Thanks for your reply. I got my mobo from aliexpress - took me 52 days to get it, so I was pretty excited to try it out. I reconnected everything once again and felt really comfortable about it, but nothing happens when turning it on :( Afterwards, I was trying to check if the mobo even got power supplied and what's even worse: While I was trying to measure the characteristics of the battery door switch, the switch fell off :( The battery switch is on a different board, as you know - and I don't know how difficult i would be to change that board as well? Have you ever tried that? From what I could measure, the switch BLOCKS the connection between the two pins, when the door is CLOSED. So theoretically, I would expect that the camera now thinks that the door is closed all the time (?). Any suggestions?

      +TOP 1 FAN most likely YES, however first check small micro switches near sd card door and battery door (once you disassemble camera) they can be damaged.

    so the motherboard is supposed to just pop out? you don't show how to take it out after the screws are out, for yours it looks already popped out.

    Were you getting the Err70 and Err80 before your 70D died?

    • @takeapart
      @takeapart  7 років тому

      +CIRUS MEDIA hi, no errors just went off and never come back.... it is pretty common thing with those big CPUs on motherboard they are overheat and damage it self...I would say canon need to improve this asap! motherboard replacement needs to be done even if you broke or bind contacts in sdcard slot, ... the guys for "micro" soldering charging way too much... easier and cheaper is to buy a second hand motherboard...

      Ok, thanks for the reply.
      I also have a Canon70d that is not coming on. I was getting the err70 and err80 errors and my camera was freezing up.. now it's dead and does not turn on.
      I will order this part and attempt to replace it myself. Thanks

      I was getting error 80 suddenly and contacted canon service center. They replaced mother board. Exactly same thing what is shown in this video. I think 70d shipped with bad boards as i am seeing so many issues mainly error 80. When I told the same, they said they haven't heard those many cases.
      I ended up paying around $200 (in INR) as it is out of warranty. My usage was very minimal.

      Hi , and No you not removing any part which will affect the focus... for motherboard you need special software to adapting new board ... (but not necessary if you using used one) it will show 999 pictures left. ;-)

      go for flexi cables and connectors.... small have a look for any dirt, body hair ... dust... clean and blow with comprest air... make sure they are properly plugged in...(some of them are tricky)
      especially connectors on top right corner and behind the motherboard.
      let me know how you go.. thanks

    • @bennh4218
      @bennh4218 6 років тому

      Thanks.
      I have now checked cables and connectors - and did not find much.
      However I did find that a red wire close to the power board is exposed since I'm able to see the copper inside the wire. Not much though only 1-2 mm of the copper is visible 5 mm from the connector itself (the wire is attached on the power board). Apart from that it seems that the wire is ok inside the connector. The wire is one of a pair (the other one is light green/or grey (not easy to see because they are very tiny). I don't know if it would be possible to replace the red wire - but maybe it would be worth giving it a try. Or do you think it would be possible to find it as a spare part as a wire-set with connectors???

    Canon sucks. I've bought a Canon 80D and after using for just one month I put It away for a couple of months and when I try to use It again It simply doesn't work due the error 80 and error 60 (yes the same error of the 70d). And the best part is that Canon kind of said to me "shit happens dude" and becouse I got my camera abroad I don't get to have any warranty repair and had to pay $500 to have It working again. Great custumer service Canon, just great.

    • @takeapart
      @takeapart  7 років тому

      +Bruno Dittert hi, and yes they has serious issues with motherboards.... but I think 60D was last pretty solid model... I know the autofocus was different but for videographers who using manual focus just good! anyway I recently switched to panasonic and it is bulletproof!
      thanks for comment!

    • @lazychop6774
      @lazychop6774 7 років тому +1

      Bruno Dittert agree! I got 3 of this camera (70d). All dead for no reason. Canon wanted to charge me $450 for repair each because they died after a year of use, out of warranty . Also told me " it's not a known issue". Im so P. O. I did the repair myself on 2 of them . kind of simple swapping since i had no further knowledge to do further corrections but they seemed working fine after that. Just serials not matching.
