Old leaves will turn brown and new leaves will get.. if not getting new one means may be no sufficient sunlight.. need to change or half change water..
That is a lotus, is it not? Lillies grow on the water, lotus's stems grow to propel the lotus flower a few inches above the water, where as lillies are floating on the water. Is this incorrect?

This is a good method to pot, but you would compromise on the size n effective growth of the plant.
