In most sheep raising countries, ram lambs are neutered at a couple of week old. You get a device called an elastrator and some tiny fat green rubber bands. Slide the band over the teeth of the elastrator, squeeze the handle to stretch the band and slide it over the scrotum, making sure the teats are outside the band. The whole thing will drop off in about 2 weeks, having shriveled up like a raisin from lack of blood supply. This is how flocks of wool producing sheep are all run together with no fighting and no inbreeding.

I do this with our sheep and goats, very easy, but I find it takes about a month for everything to fall off. You also need to make sure the rubber band is not too close to the abdomen - you want to snug it down on top of the testicles and push them to the bottom of the sac, then put the band on top of them and ease if off. If you have it too close to the belly, it can leave open gaps in the abdominal skin and can be nasty and can cause death. So making sure you don't get abdominal skin, only the sac skin, is essential.
But this is VERY easy. I do this at about 4 weeks of age. One person holds the lamb or kid up in the air with the legs facing you so you have easy access, and you can band in about 2 minutes or less. No worries about inbreeding, and no male aggressiveness with each other. One big happy family ;)

This practice of banding male lambs is illegal in the Netherlands as it is considered to cause unnecessary suffering.

    • @HeatherNaturaly
      @HeatherNaturaly 3 роки тому +3

@@cstone5220 Obviously, those who legislated that, have never bothered to WATCH a flock of lambs prancing about and playing within an hour of being banded. Dumb people who don't know the first thing about animal husbandry, have no business making laws to govern it.

    Banding
As with tail docking, there are many techniques that can be used to castrate ram lambs. The easiest and most common method of castration is the rubber ring or band. Using an elastrator tool (or ring extender), the band is placed above the testicles, around the neck of the lamb's scrotum. Care should be taken not to place the band over the lamb's rudimentary teats. Banding will cause the testicles and scrotum to shrivel up and fall off in a few weeks. As with docking, the shriveled scrotum may be removed before it falls off. Both testicles must be below the placement of the band. If one testicle is missed, it will be retained in the belly cavity, resulting in a "bucky" lamb that will have male characteristics.
Castration by banding causes some pain to the lamb, but the pain is generally short-lived. Lambs should be castrated at a young age, preferably between 1 and 7 days of age. Castation in the first 24 hours may interfere with bonding and colostrum intake and is not recommended. As with tail docking, pain can be reduced if a clamp (using Burdizzo) is applied immediately before or after application of the ring.
Some veterinarians advocate the use of lidocaine to reduce the pain felt by the lamb; however, lidocaine is not available for purchase over-the-counter. The new Numnuts® tool provides pain relief at the same time it bands. As with banding tails, lambs should be protected against tetanus via passive immunity or use of the tetanus anti-toxin at the time of castration.

I have found the easiest way to castrate rams is banding the testicles. It isn't painful for them, doesn't leave an open wound. The testicles just shrivel and fall off. Thanks for sharing through even in your young parent exhaustion phase.

In the US, we absolutely castrate rams. As a kid, that was one of my jobs on our farm. I did all the young calves and sheep. We used a device that had 4 "prongs" sticking up, you put a very tight "rubber band" around the prongs, squeeze the handle and it opens up. Place it around the top of the scrotum, a bit away from the body, and let the pressure off the handle. Simply cutting off the circulation to the scrotum and it falls off. Very effective, takes just a few minutes.

Its been odd weather all around for us too. I live in the U.S .A in New Hampshire and we did not have a spring to speak of . The weather was quite cold we had some rain then it just started in to summer today was 35.555 degrees Celsius today and it has been hot for days now.
That's about 96 degrees Fahrenheit which is usual weather for summer but it is still spring here.
I have been reading about global weather patterns changing from tropical areas getting lower temperatures to the swiss alps getting warmer , the arctic getting warmer.
When I was a child growing up in New England here in the United States of America spring was always around 55 to 65 degrees F. rain and fairly cool. the past 7 or so years has been no spring and very high temperatures through spring and even worse in the summer time.
I also wanted to say I love the cinematography in your videos. I am of the opinion that your country specifically where you live is an absolutely Gorgeous place to live and raise a family.

Hello from So. California. I'm new to your relaxing channel. It's nice to get a peak into your little off-grid farm & the challenges you face.
The traditional Navajo or Dine' people here in the U.S. state of Arizona might be a good source of information on how to tend sheep. Traditional Navajo often live very sparce, off-grid lives as well. It's interesting how they tend their flocks, shear wool & process the wool naturally to make beautiful rugs.
"Navajo Grandma," on UA-cam would be a good channel to start discovering how people live on the Navajo Nation; simply & with Nature.
    Well done video, Thank You!

As I told you in a previous message you can nurture ram lambs with rubber bands put on with a special band expander also used for tails. Regards Maggie

Back 60 yrs ago the farmers in New Zealand would rubber band the testicle bag of male lambs along with their tails. This would neuter the rams and they'd be called wethers not rams. The tails drop off also. Not sure if this is still done in today's farming though. If you search LAMB CASTRATION on Duck Duck Go they demonstrate 3 methods of castrating male lambs. One being the rubber ring I spoke of above. You only require one tool and some rubber rings to do this method of castration (at 2-4wks old) and tail docking also. A good time to invest in the tool if it's almost lambing season now , you will ne able to do this years males. All the best. Lovely to see your wee lad running around now. Life will never be unbusy again until your grandkids are all grown up. I'm at that stage now. Only one 13yr old grkid still at home . They don't live as close now so I don't see him him very often. So ENJOY EVERY MOMENT WITH THEM. At the start it seems like 20-30 yrs is a long time but in reality it goes by quite fast and there's still a lot of living to do between ages 60 -85yrs. LOL

    Hello from 🇨🇦
Your boy is growing so beautifulyl.. he was so proud helping Mom in the little garden 😊 It's going to be a wonderful Summer with him this year as he is able to get around ☺️ Have yous looked into banding your rams... Because they are older you might need a vet to help it's abit tricky with bigger testicles to get through the band..I'm sure it would be less costly than neautering... Maybe there is an elder who could help with that. God's Continual Blessings to you all 🙏😇💝

Your tomatoplants lokk like they have grown in too much warmth with not enough light. If you raise them colder, they will become much lower but stronger and thicker. I let mine raise in the greenhouse as long as it is not freezing cold the whole day. A few hours of freezing temperatures outside in the early morning will not harm them in the greenhouse. If it is colder for a longer time, I take them inside. Tomatos can take quite a cold without being harmed. I once forgot mine outside on a table an they were completely covered in snow when I found them the next morning. they all survived.

I wonder about the tree, (apple tree if I remember good) where you putted the placenta under it. Did it survived the winter? 🥺
I sincerely love you cause you really change my spirit emotions in positive feelings.
My much beloved grandma passed away not long ago and pain is fresh but after watching your wonderful video life documentary, it changes me.

Do you have 'super glue' in Sweden? It was created for the army to seal wounds on the battle field. I recently sliced my finger badly, while sharpening a scythe and I glued it together with super glue. You would be hard pressed to even see the scar. It is very good to keep on hand for accidents when you live in the wilds.

Thank you Tova, Mathias and Ivar for another beautiful post sharing your life with us! I realize that these posts are heavily edited and real life is not easy especially where you are or without conflict, but you have such a peaceful soothing, amazingly calming way of communicating through your videos. I think I could listen to you for hours. As someone said in the comments I feel relaxed and happy after watching you. Again thanks so much for radiating the sincere warmth, humbleness, wisdom and gentleness through your posts.

When you band them at only a couple days old, they dont even feel it. But you can purchase the tool, and the bands, then in the future always be able to solve this problem. I believe u can band at any age aswell
