  • Conversations host Harry Kreisler welcomes biblical scholar Bart Ehrman for a discussion of his intellectual odyssey with a focus on how the Bible explains the problem of human suffering. The conversation includes a discussion of the challenges of biblical interpretation when confronting this age old problem of the human condition. Included are topics such as the contribution of the prophets, a comparison of the old and new testaments, the book of Job, and the emergence of apocalyptic writers. Ehrman is quite possibly my favourite Biblical scholar. I'm quite sure his lack of belief/faith is a factor in that but he's so thorough, reasonable and reasoned that it seems virtually impossible to fault his approach.

That was a very brave thing that Bart did. --> being in the thick of Catholisism, studiying it to the bone and coming to the conculsion that the Bible is flawed, written by men, fear based, has been mis-interpreted, contradictory, etc...then moving away from his faith to become Agnostic. Most of us who have some kind of foundation in religion (however small it may be, such as myself only going to 1st & 2nd grade in Catholic school) only cling to our religion because of fear.

Bart isn't the only Scholar that has seen the new testament has serious flaws. Even in the old testament there are problems. Christians believe that Moses was the author of the first 5 books since that what it says, yet how does moses write about his own death?
Second, unless you can read Greek and Aramaic, you can only go by what translated to you, and how can you be sure that translator is correct? The Catholic Church decided what would be. Earliest bible books are from around 900 AD. So theres no proof whatsoever any of the Bibles are truthful.
As for the first 5 books, the Jewish Scholars will tell you that they are a compilation of 4 different versions of them. So the new testaments could be the same.

As a former ESL / EFL teacher, i find the easily-discernible difference to be a particular "pet-peeve" when the two words are conflated by native-speakers of English... Seeming fools on sports commentary websites seem particularly prone to this error, so it jars to see the mistake made outside that context. The alternative is to realize that God created the world just as it is with it's good and evil. But that would mean that God is responsible for the evil in the world. So people rather believe that an apocalypse is going to happen. They rather think that the world is controlled by Satan and his henchmen and that God is going to do something about it. In the Hebrew Bible we just find 'Sons of God', part of the angelic hierarchies, somewhat corrupted echoed in the Trial of Jesus 'the son of God' versus Jesus Barabbas (means:'Son of the Father', i.e God). 'Son of God in the flesh' is just a cheap transformation of the old Greek theogony of Hesiod into the new Greek colored theology called Christianity. And that's the end of the matter.

Accusing Bart Ehrman of lying, i.e. the spreading of falsehoods with the intent to deceive, is a rather bold claim. and that's the problem.....every denomination sees all the others as a cult........Prod verse Catholic........Calvin verses Luther......Speaking in tongues...faith healing.....prophecy.........how many claims of cultism among 38,000 denominations world wide can develop from such a mess?
The bible is so unclear........so far off objectivity that people and institutions are dedicated to trying to figure it all out..........silly but sad really.

According to most translations of Mark 2:26, Jesus is said to have said that “in the days of Abiathar the high priest” David went into the house of God and ate of the showbread. Since Ahimelech, Abiathar's father, was high priest when this happened, this translation would be historically inaccurate. Interestingly, some early textual witnesses omit this phrase, nor does it appear in the parallel passages at Matthew 12:4 and Luke 6:4. However, a similar formulation is found in the Greek text of Mark 12:26 and Luke 20:37, and in these passages many translations use the phrase "in the story of". Thus, it seems appropriate to render Mark 2:26 so it reads: “As he entered into the house of God, according to the account of Abiathar the chief priest . . .” Since the account of Abiathar's activities begins shortly after the account of David going into the house of God to eat the showbread, and since Abiathar later became high priest of Israel under David's rule, this translation makes the historical Accuracy of report maintained.
    Could this be a solution?

I agree fully that the Jews veered away from the concepts of the OT. They introduced man made theories that became dogma by the time Jesus ministered and persist to this very day, i.e: transmigration of souls, "holy" rabbis who have died, yet reappear from time to time due to their divine attributes etc. However, the concept of Satan as belonging to the spiritual realm and acting independently and contrary to God's will was universally accepted therefore can be branded solidly Judaic.

You are well read but you thinks you have jewish answers to suffuring.
    Job bottom line is

at mount sinai the jewish nation was experiancing soul separation -- that is death, and they resurected. was God's way of saying I play with souls...the living.
Focusing on the aspect of pain.
We understand God as perfect and in finite and make a big mistake in his aspect of pain.
Perfection according to us can never experience pain.
But pain is his. The day he created the physical world he took it upon himself.
When Man was created he was not sent to the physical world but in the Garden of Eden.
If you would have eaten from the tree he would experience dead and pain and suffering.
Eve understood that her job was in the lower worlds. And was ready. So thats when she got her physical body a window in God relm of suffering.
That is the reason why God was telling Job friends you have to bring a sin sacrifice because you made a mistake and understanding suffering.
we have to respect pain in human as God's experiance...the vessel cant expiriance infinite godliness.
You are taught that God was an Idol who doesn't experience suffering.
Does this picture of god placed in a place of old father bedridden with painful bed sores all over his body. With dementia.

Satan was created by God as a good being. He CHOSE to become evil because he was tempted to bring suffering to the world in order that he may be the prince of this world. Satan had absolute free will as do we, the only difference being that Satan never doubted God's existence anymore that you doubt your own existence because God reveals himself to the spirit world in a more explicit way than he does to human beings, thus Satan's choice was even more sinful stemming from greed, pride etc...
