  • How To Shorten or Repair Throttle Cable, Brake or Clutch Cables with Solder - Motorcycle | Part 18
    In this episode, I adjust the length of the throttle cable for my Honda CB750 project motorcycle. I am building this bike to be a road-going runner, not a full restoration. The bike is a bitsa, and came with a different set of carbs than the ones now fitted.
    Here's what I used in this video:
    Brass nipple: ebay.us/nQXvYS
    Flux: ebay.us/gcUFD3
    Blow torch: ebay.us/sYV6SY
    This seems to be a frequent problem that I run into, not just on this bike but with the Triumphs I have worked on. Maybe I am just expecting too much from cheap throttle cables, but when you have changed the twist grip and the carbs it is impossible to know if the original spec cable will fit anyway!
    Luckily it has mostly been a case of trimming the outer cable so that the inner cable pokes out a little bit more. For this one, though I need to shorten the inner cable, it was about 2 inches too long.
    I used a brass solder on the nipple. Make sure you get the right size, not all nipples are equal :) In this case, it was 6mm outside diameter.
    It is possible to make a former and cast your own solder nipples on the end of the inner cable, but I haven’t tried that, yet! You can also get ones with a grub screw to secure them, these tend to be for emergency use though.
    The brass nipples work just fine, but you do have to remember to use flux. The flux makes the solder flow better and give a better join between the nipple and the cable.

    When I saw the title of your video, I knew you had to be an old guy. All the youngsters do is replace parts. I use a solder pot, myself. And you even understand camera angles. I just watched a guy blocking the view of what he was doing with his hands or a bit of the bike. Thanks

      Thanks for the positivity in your comment. I was brought up by people who wanted to make their property last for ever, so a lot of make do and mend. This modern throw away world would be completely alien to them.

    I think there is nothing more rewarding than altering, recycling, repurposing whatever to repair or replace anything broken or even upgrading something else rather than just buying what you need ready off the shelf

      They used to call it making do, I call it making sense. It has even become fashionable, who'd have thought?

    I just saw a guy opening the clutch, and messing with the rod to deal with too long cable clutch. Your method is less risky. Thank you.

      I think your description of the other video is showing how to adjust the clutch actuating push rod. It wouldn't help with a cable that was too long. Depending on the bike, the clutch push rod might need adjusting to compensate for wear if the clutch is worn. I hope this helps.

      Thank you. I am considering just making all of my cables from scratch in future, using kits like these ebay.us/sYxK2L I would remove any screws and solder them. Good luck with sorting your problem.

    This is so useful. I have a CB550 that needs short cables. as well as cm400t which is hard to find short cables for so this will be my new project for the next two weeks.

      Thanks Shawn! This is indeed a great trick, really glad I figured out how to do this as I've found myself struggling with long cables a few times over the years. I hope the cable modification goes well for you too.

    Will this hack work on clutch cable that has to deal with a 300ft pressure plate? I'd hate for it to separate while driving and

      I am not sure what this would be working with I would look at the one you are replacing. If the nipple is of the lead/solder type then I can't see why not. However if it is a brass or other type of nipple then I would look for one that was specifically made for it. I do hope this helps. I would probably give it a go myself, but I'm daft like that :)

    Is it a different kind of solder used in electronics?

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  Рік тому +2

      I use standard solder, same as I would solder wires with. I suspect you could use plumbesr solder as well.

    What if i would want to make the cable longer? Could it be possible to do that.

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  2 роки тому +3

      Sorry, but lengthening cables isn't anything I have tried.
      If you can take the nipple off, you could add a length of outer cover, but it would be a little messy where they butted up. Then you would have to solder the nipple back on. I would only do this if there wasn't any other altenative, I would first look to get a longer cable to start off with.

    Can you send a link for the video on how to lengthen the cable? Thank you

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  Рік тому

      Hi Nick, the only way to lengthen it would be to replace the outer or inner depending on what the problem is. In the UK a good company to use would be Venhill - hope that helps!

    How do you trim the casing?

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  2 роки тому

      Very carefully with a Dremel cutting disk.
      You will find that there is a white nylon sheath against the actual wire, with a wire protector wound around it, with a plastic cover outside. It takes patience to cut the wire protector inside the casing/cover square.
      If you can pull the inner cable back so you don't damage it, but even if you can't because you already have a nipple on the end, with slow careful cutting it isn't too hard to do.
      I have found that I have had to cut the outer casing on a number of made up cables to get them to fit right. Obviously once you have cut the outer casing to fit, you need to cut along it to remove the parts, usually ends up looking like a lot of small lock washers.
      I hope this helps. Good luck.

      Hi Anthony, you can get them in a few sizes, measure your existing one and have a look around on ebay. Maybe this smaller version is the type you need: ebay.us/YClfpl
      Hope that helps!

    How about to lengthen it ? 😅

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  22 дні тому

      Sorry, but untless the inner cable is long enough there isn't really anything you can do to lengthen it. Probably best to buy new.
