remember this was 1978 !!! Disco ruled tbe airwaves these people had no clue that they where watching and hearing the greatest guitarist who was changing the landscape going into the 80's.
I can listen to this 10,000 times never gets old! He just freaking shreds like nobodies business. I can't believe what he was bringing in 78. Damn!!!!!!!!!!
I hear ya , but all them kats is in there , especially Hendrix , and Alan Holdworth , don't know if Edward Van Halen listen to Roy Buchanan but there's some kind of mojo goin on and its good
I feel like Eddie was sooo much better at this time and before this because he didnt do as much tapping so he relied on his fretting hand to play a bunch of rapid fire riffs. Fucking incredible.
Plus his tone is awesome live around 78/79. It sounds like the records. Later in the early 80's it was scratchy due to wireless and nowadays it's a gainy POS. I adore his club days when he rarely tapped and dare I say it when he plays non trem guitars like the destroyer, LP and Flying V
@@paulscape72 For sure, man. A lot of his early, most fiery playing was done on non-trem guitars, like the Destroyer. The whammy stuff was a bit of a gimmick, really. Still sounded cool though, don't get me wrong!
Placed in context, the minds of thousands upon thousands of kids were blown by what they were hearing in 1978. It was seemingly impossible what they were hearing.
NOBODY was ever more raw, cleaner, innovative, tonemongerin', nasty, influential,,,,the best if there could ever be one only....in my humble opinion of course..
I've said it many times kids. THE GREATEST GUITARIST OF MY GENERATION! And there will be NO FN SUBSTITUTE !!!! Today's music absolutely blows. 100 years from now people who hear this will still be blown away!!!! All copy cats after 1978.
Just imagine the sounds coming out of Eddie and Alex’s bedroom when they were kids living at their parents house, probably some amazing stuff. Been a big fan since 1982, sixth grade.
The Greatest since Hendrix !!. I seen them in 79 and it doesn't get much better than that. By 1985 coke damage and soft sounding keyboards started to take their toll .. That being said the 2015 solos are way better than the late 90's and 2007 the worst year. So he has re-gained most of his chops witch is a miracle indeed..
I disagree. One thing EVH is not, is under-appreciated. The man changed electric guitar. There are only about four people in the world who ever did that, and I'm giving the fourth the benefit of the doubt. Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie, and Yngwie Malmstein
I'd say Yngwie is rightfully one of them. He came into the scene with a perfected style only a few other had tried but lacked the energy, the technique and the speed. Every metal guitar player since the mid 80s have been inspired in some way or another by Yngwie's runs, scales, vibrato or his insane right hand technique.
I’ve seen Van Halen 9 times starting in 1979 and as recent as twice in 2015 (never withHagar). I really wish Eddie would play Eruption as it was on the first album. Don’t get me wrong, I love the current “Solo”. But I want to hear him just reproduce it is be last time. As for his playing; I firmly believe he is much better now than the drunken old days. I can’t wait for the next tour. I’ll be there!
This was only TEN years after bands like Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Sabbath, Free etc were putting out their genre-defining albums. It's incredible to think how far Eddie took guitar in that time, and all with equipment that had been available to those earlier guitarists as well. Forget the flash and tapping, this was Electric Guitar on a whole 'nother level.
Jimi was a big influence on Eddie, and Eddie admits it. Clapton too. Eddie's style is hybrid. He heard all the greats before him, studied them, then gave the world his interpretation of what he heard. That's true art.
Actually EVH always says Clapton was far and away his biggest influence. He said Hendrix used too many effects so he couldn't afford to try and play that way when he was young.
@NeutralCorner hmm i spose you're right, most people don't think of anything other than tapping when they think of Eddie which is pretty unfair i think. do you like George Lynch?
No one can duplicate his picking technique it’s unbelievable. The only person I can compare him to is the great drummer Tony Williams. It’s all in there wrist. Wrist rotation like a drill. 30 years of playing both drums and guitar...and still there’s no one I’ve see who can do everything these guys did. You might come close... but sorry, not like them.
Yea Eddie says he was influenced by Clapton but I can't help but notice similiarity to Ritchie Blackmore ..especially with the whammy abuse...with Eddie having a more reckless, wild approach to his playing compared to blackmore.
The Who didn't release their album Who Are You until two months after this show. Wonder what old Pete Townsend (who was 33 in 1978) thought when he first heard Van Halen?
Where did Eds heroics end? In his pop anthem Jump right next to Karma Chameleon. Jump had a wild and wanky solo in it, cuz thats what "music" supposedly had to have. Nah

Dude. Really? Your top 3 cannot play Eruption! But Eddie can play all of their stuff note for note by listening once. You’re kidding yourself if you really believe there are 3 guitarists better than Eddie Van Halen.

the greatest guitarist of my generation period! seen him 15 times.
What years did you see him?
Of any generation
from 1:13 to 1:25 some of the greatest guitar I ever heard. Eddie just brings it.
remember this was 1978 !!! Disco ruled tbe airwaves these people had no clue that they where watching and hearing the greatest guitarist who was changing the landscape going into the 80's.
Greg Devito he plays in that way before 78 , since 1975
wow .. he's playing like he had something to prove .. he's on fire here.
Running through all the octaves at full speed, that’s quiet impressive. That right hand was faster than Malmsteen back then.

V.H. woke up the '70s!!
He knocked the door down im here

He was definitely better here than in '86, say.
I love Eddie’s tapping, but I agree sometimes it’s better when he played normally, some of my favorite solos of his don’t have tapping in them at all.
I love his tapping. It’s genius. But there’s no denying this solo here is phenomenal.

Rest In Peace Eddie!! There will never be another guitar player to change the world like you did.

All I have to say, "Hendrix, Page,Blackmore,Beck,Clapton." Who???? Eddie Van Halen changed guitar forever in 78.
Absoluty
Eddie learned and was surely inspired by those mentioned.
This is the reason I love EVH⚡️
B L A Z I N G 1978 Lots other talent guitarist this cat pour rocket fuel and used a blow torch with melody phrasing out of this world GENIUS.
He set the bar for so many decades. LIVING LEGEND
On fire! When he was at the top of his game.

Hendrix couldn't touch this not even close..Eddie VH is king of Kings ..Lord of Lords
This is phenomenally and amazingly dirty and filthy good. I absolutely love this version. So raw.
This is f**kin greatness. RIP Eddie
4 minutes of music from beyond.
London was lit that night afterwards.
3:26 he made this sound in the 70s... With a guitar! It sounds like todays EDM.
I wish there was a video with this. Stellar!
Eddie should be the number 1 greatest guitarist of all time he changed the way you hear guitar.
I disagree. One thing EVH is not, is under-appreciated. The man changed electric guitar. There are only about four people in the world who ever did that, and I'm giving the fourth the benefit of the doubt. Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie, and Yngwie Malmstein

You got that right brother 1000 % agreed
Your list is spot on , one for each decade
@@IcarusSuite most were actually inspired by both, not only Yngwie.
Good sound quality!
Imagine hearing this .....in 1978 !? I mean it sounds like NOTHING that came before !
I saw this tour in ‘78. My first concert ever. Best concert I ever saw. 🤟

fatfender48 exactly!
Actually he was not!
Hendrix paved the way with playing wild. Eddie went down that same road playing wild!
Actually EVH always says Clapton was far and away his biggest influence. He said Hendrix used too many effects so he couldn't afford to try and play that way when he was young.
Trying to explain how Eddie and MANY of Great became Great is the ART. UA-cam is the spoon feeding of a Generation. IT'S just the way.
@NeutralCorner hmm i spose you're right, most people don't think of anything other than tapping when they think of Eddie which is pretty unfair i think. do you like George Lynch?
@odgeUK And he was 21yrs-old for Gods sake!!
It's like the second coming of Jimi Hendrix with John Bonham on drums! Fuck i love it!
No he’s way better than Hendrix. I don’t think Hendrix could play this.
The crazy thing is he made every on go crazy without a pedal unlike Hendrix.
Corey Feldman can run circles round this! 😂
@NeutralCorner van halen... under appreciated?
And people claim Rock is not serious music. The guy opened up the 6 like Mozart did the violin or Beethoven did the piano.
