What most people don't know is that this priest, Fr. Reginald Foster is probably the highest ranking Latin Scholar in the world. Since all official Vatican documents are in Latin, they go to Reggie to make the docs airtight and right. Last I heard, Rev. Foster lives in Milwaukee and teaches Latin to anyone who seriously wants to learn...no charge. As for his faith....he likes to be called Reggie. ;)
Yeah, the whole humble thing is cool and all, but I think someone of such ability deserves a title of respect in introductory circumstances and formal settings and stuff. It's difficult to do that with Latin since it is basically so niche and forgotten that few can tell who's good at it, but I believe in both Chess and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the title 'grand master' is used at the highest level. The difference between calling someone 'master' vs calling them 'father' or 'reverend' is that 'master', at least in the relevant context, is entirely dependent on skill and accomplishment, which MUST be proven somehow, whereas 'reverend' or 'father' are titles which more-or-less assume you must be inherently respected. You are uniquely qualified in bullshit, and that cannot be argued against. You want to walk up and challenge a grand master in their skill? Fine. Go ahead. They will either crush you and be done with it, be so much better that they just decide to put you in challenging situations where you have to use your head, or perhaps in extremely rare circumstances, you may prove yourself a prodigy, or get incredibly lucky... at that point, it's time for round 2. In any event, the title is probably more important for the student/challenger than it is for the grand masters themselves. a)you are learning off of a grand master. b)It's OK that he's kicking your ass. He is a grand master. just pay attention to what he's doing and learn from it. On the other hand, do you want to challenge a father/reverend on moral matters in his own 'domain'? That is unjustified and disrespectful. Learn your place, or get out.
God bless this man. If anyone's going to Heaven it's this guy. St. Peter: "I saw you cameo appearance on Religulous." Reggie :"You want me to lie?" Peter: "Good point, you're in"
He was their head latin writer and translator. They always wanted to fire him but needed his skill. He's apparently one of the best latinest's in the world. Wrote all the inauguration speeches and so on for the last 40 some years. He hasn't been religious for a long time :)
You know what? That was exactly what I suspected. Maybe non-religious, but certainly not 'Catholic'... I knew he was fluent in Latin from investigating him years ago, but I didn't piece together the fact that he might not be that popular with the church until I started investigating the history of Catholicism, Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation, etc... I watched this again and thought.... MAN... being a master of Latin must give you a HUGE amount of leverage over the Catholic Church these days...
I feel bad for guys like this. They've been in the church for so long, then they start doubting it. But it seems like he's sort of affraid to face up to it. He wants to remain in the Matrix.
I don't think this Priest gives a shit. He believes what he believes and understands that can't make people believe anything .He doest doubt. Its bigger than that. He just knows BS when he sees it.
What a cool guy. Reginald Foster is arguably the foremost Latinist in the world, certainly among the very greatest. Whatever he believes (and I think he probably does believe in God/Jesus/etc, just not in the excesses and hypocrisy of Catholicism) I can understand why he would want to work at the Vatican, given his field. Too bad he has to deal with all that crap.
Clara Kelly It seems he doesn't believe the bullshit that protestants, evangelists, mormons or any other form of christianity believe, he just believes in jesus and god but not any of those bullshit stories.
As an Atheist this priest is my favorite priest of all time. I saw the movie in its entirety. Parts of this interview, it was not a debate, were cut. He said all the stories in the bible, such as Jonah and the Whale and Adam and Eve, etc. were JUST stories. They are not to be taken literally. They are lessons. Yes, I agree they are not to be taken literally, but many, many do. Most probably do. That is a huge problem; people put their minds on hold.
TXGUNNER! I'm a catholic and everything this guy said I agreed with! I wish he was my priest😂But let's be honest, Jonah and the whale and all of those are just parables. I don't understand how people of my faith believe it as a historical fact😂
@@amplifiedbible07 If you are asking me, a person named whatever they call jesus now may have existed, but he did no magic and he sure as fuck did not rise from the dead. I don't know what the Priest thinks.
This priest was awesome!! As a struggling Christian I get what he was really saying here to Bill Maher. That we don't have all the answers about God and our many various versions of our understanding Christian beliefs, in this life. 🧡
Funny, throughout the whole documentary the only two guys that had any sense were the two Catholics they interviewed. The other priest from the Catholic observatory was a wise fellow as well.
The higher up Catholics in VC don’t believe in Christianity like most fundamentalists or the Bible literally. They evolve and updated their beliefs with the times and science. Unfortunately most Catholics won’t accept what the people in VC believe which is much more acceptable and reasonable.
Lol. So we have this God, older than time, all knowing, all powerful, creator of everything, who makes us in his image and places us on a spec of rock as the only life in an nearly infinite universe, but we don't wanna disrupt his day by praying to him in a crisis unless we're crazy sure it's worth his time. I know this is three years old but I loved that comment.
Exactly why catholics are LOST!! They have all these saints and mary and then God, come on now are u serious? Catholicism is just a tradition. Take your blinders off people. Wake up
[ Foster's position gave him more freedom to speak out than most priests, and he was sought out by journalists. He once responded to a question about Latin as a "sacred language": "In the first century every prostitute in Rome spoke it fluently-and much better than most people in the Roman Curia"•••] from his Wikipedia entry.
I saw the whole documentary and was very disappointed. I thought that is was going to be enlightening with questions and debate but instead it was simple pompous bashing. I'm not religious myself but I am inquisitive. I felt like I was being bombarded by an atheist thumper.
@chickeneggchickeneg1 that's interesting, I did not know that. He hasn't been religious for a long time? Well the movie was released about 5 years ago. Has he become an atheist in the last 5 years? He seems to believe in god in the video.
Yeah, they always wanted to throw him out for being not really in on the game. At least that's what he said. I think like many priests, he was just doing what he knew how to do. But yeah, somebody posted that interview of him on youtube. It's called "Mike Lowe Reports, the latin king". I think it's possible he might have a less religious and more cosmic view of the word "god" or as some physicists now instead like to call "creation". I think this interview gave him the chance to speak his mind.
Im not sure he was mocking him, he was just asking him questions, i think maher probably was thinking like me that if more priests and christians were like him i wouldnt be so hostile to christianity
The inherent problem with the interview/discussion is that mr. Maher does not get someone to explain why these things are. Even coming from someone with little faith this should be an issue. I would like to know why these things are instead of the dismissal that we get from this "priest." Sorry if I was to interview someone representing a faith they should dress like they believe in it.
This "sad old man" seems pretty chill and laid-back. Come again when you'e as old as him. BTW: He used to be the leading Latinist of the Vatican for decades who can speak and read Latin just as well as English. Do some research before macking him, he is an expert in his field.

Rest in Peace Father Reginald! He died from COVID, on the 25th of December...
Good news for him. He is in heaven now.
All old people from age 82-96 died from covid in 2020 and 2021. Even if you were killed in a car crash they would of said it was covid
Really? That is very sad but a bit beautiful at the same time.
The Pope sent out the A team when Bill Maher came a knocking at his door.

Gotta love how Fr. Foster keeps it 💯. Actually makes me want to be a better Catholic.
He made such a good point: "You can't convince them."
Totally awesome
