He's a genius pianist, and this concert shows it probably better than any recording. He hasn't played this freely since the 80s. Nothing against him (he is my absolute idol), but the freedom with which he played back then was astonishing. This record should be played to any aspiring rock pianist. I can only dream of playing like this (not going to happen - 42, been playing for 30 years, and not going to get any better than I am now).
Tumbleweed Connection was Bernie Taupin's Response to the Huge Influence THE BAND had on him.! He was a huge fan of them and their writing especially Robbie's lyrics..
I just can't enjoy listening to BDTM, but must admit that this version is contagious, especially towards the end. Nigel's druming is madening. Also, I have seen Elton doing this song live and I defy anyone to stay still.
This is the perfect song for these trying times. Live music from this era is my true love. 11-17-70 rates with the best Pink Floyd (1970 BBC John Peel) & Gratefil Dead (Dick's Pick 16) recordings.
When the album was released in Italy the music critics "burned down" it. They said : flabby, minor, useless. Never read a review but listen to the Music openhearted. Ciao.
Ronnie- are you sure this was broadcast on wabc-fm? In NYC, there was a wabc-am, but no wabc-fm. Wabc-am was known for being the first nyc station to play the Beatles in the early 1960s, but by 1970 they were playing top ten pop hits, and likely would not play a concert like this. Dave Herman was a dj on wnew-fm, which was a rock album oriented station, which is where this concert was likely broadcast.
Hi, W-ABC FM later changed their call letters to W-PLJ FM. I grew up in NYC but we didn't have an FM radio till around 1974 I think. We only had an AM radio in the car in 1970. I later told my dad to get an AM FM radio in the next car he bought bc we heard it was so much better than AM. At least that's what I found out by looking it up regarding WABC FM. Dave Herman worked for WABC FM before going to WNEW FM. Also, sad news I think I read the guy who's yt channel this is passed away. He never answers anymore. Peace.
nice job by Dee Murray on bass.. sadly I've seen him made fun of in some "The Who" fans comments on Who live videos... for how he played bass on Pinball Wizard. of course, The Who will never and would never approach the musical complexity of Elton. Elton loves his split chords... that's where, as he's mentioned a few times in public, the note played by the bottom end of the piano, and typically the bass guitar is not the root of the chord. One would be in this song, after "You tell me....at your [ Bb / C ] feet......" B flat major chord over a couple C notes in the bass... gives it some tension. Peace.
This is such a great live recording. Much the way John Lennon wanted 'Let It Be' to have sounded, but ended up being overproduced by Phil Spector (later re-mixed and produced by Paul McCartney as 'Let It Be Naked' in 2003, the only version I get to listen now). The energy is contageous. Here in Brasil, this album was released under a different name, 'Bad Side Of The Moon' and audio quality was awful. I blamed the Brazilian cut, but later I found out Elton didn't like it either and prefered the US mixing. So Gus Dudgeon changed the sound of this album upon the first digitally remastered using the original master tapes. He even left a message to Elton in a 'how do you like it now" style. Thanks for posting.

Greatest piano player on the planet.
His solo piano concerts in the late 90’s were pretty incredible.
You re right on
Otra vez, Ronnie, qué pulcritud de sonido e imágenes. Sos un Maestro de la Presentación.-

My absolute favorite performance of this song. I'm surprised I haven't worn out my vinyl of this concert.
It’s a shame no video

Officer Gregory Stevens, on piano, Elton uses the fifth as his bass notes A LOT to get a more grand sound out of it, and it works.
