That belt up in back advert really bloody worked though. My car doesn't move till all belts are on.
Same if anyone is in the back they be belted if no off you go enjoy your walk
Agree and it made such an impression that I recognised it immediately.
@@OneTrueScotsman Do you remember the Jimmy Saville video, 'Clunk Click every trip. Sick.
@@dianat119my son is 18 and will say "clunk. click .every trip ( unless you are in a car with Jimmy Saville the get out and walk )
Hmmm...maybe paying a bit more attention to basic physics in school would have meant you didn't need the advert.
I've rang the Samaritans, sometimes it's easier to talk to a stranger, they never judge you, and most importantly, they LISTEN to you, they probably saved my life if I'm totally honest.
Same with me tbh
Yup
Me too . Fifteen years ago . Got dumped after an eight year relationship just as we were planning our wedding. Significant other had also cleared out my savings via fraud . I was too ashamed to tell anyone but the Samaritans listened to me and definitely helped me to find a way to keep going. Wonderful people.
@@99fruitbat94 Sorry to hear this, hope life is better for you now.
I prank call them for a good laugh . 😅
Anyone remember those adverts they used to show you at school in the 90s to scare the scrap out of you? I remember one about a kid on the train tracks, one in a fire, a firework one, and one about some kid drowning in a pool. Parents would be moaning these days that you were traumatising their kids 😂😂
The train tracks one might be titled 'Robbie' or 'The Finishing Line', you can find both on UA-cam I believe.
There’s an inside number 9 episode based around these kind of adverts . Totally creepy
there is a new train tracks on here on YT ... you will find it :(
im having flashbacks of a train track and a shoe..... LOL
Yep, showing someone being obliterated by a train would be pretty traumatising to a small child......
We need a revival of some of these adverts. Good for you JT for tackling some very delicate issues
UK TV is too soft these days. They don't have the stomach anymore and need to run to their 'safe spaces'.
It always amazes me the amount of American youtubers I see driving around and not wearing a seatbelt. It saves lives. Volvo opened the patent for all car manufacturers because of how much it can save your life.
was it Mercedes that done the same with airbags? i think i am misremembering if I'm honest and you seem to be a car person so probably the right person to ask!
@beltrofix7667 No, airbags was an American invention.
6:02 this is one of them adverts that stuck in my head since it was 1st shown, i was 15 then I'm 41 now. I still always make sure everyone has there seat belt on
Ditto.
Yes, this is one I’ve never forgotten tbf
Yes I have never forgotten this or it's message, same as the later one they did with a pizza hitting the windscreen.
Yeah this one is forever ingrained in my brain, I will never drive until everyone is belted!
The seatbelt one TRAUMATISED me as a kid... it's why I never move my car until everyone is buckled up. No exceptions!
Same here. That girls scream still echos in my mind almost 30 years later.
I remember so many of these adverts growing up in the 80s/90s
You're probably of the age like me that also got the ones made in the 60s and 70s too, and some of those were truly terrifying, but effective.
"Charley says..."
Part two dude! As a UK native who grew up in the 90’s you e barely scratched the surface!!
Awesome channel btw… 👍🏻😅🇺🇸🇬🇧
The Samaritans are a charity that listen when no one else can. I faced a series of bullying events being transgender and decided to take my own life. I gave the Samaritans a call as a last resort and they saved my life. That's how I, one of "your Wales people", am still alive today.
That’s fantastic Steph! Glad you are x
So glad you're still here! Samaritans have helped me when I was struggling too.
Saved me too . Different reasons but yes they are amazing . Sending you ❤
Ooof, thank goodness they were there for you. They do a vital & amazing job, without a doubt.
They're a good bunch, not sure if I could do that job....
Glad you made it through. Just remember; It's their problem, not yours. It's not up to the a*seholes to decide how you live your life.
11:15 If I remember correctly, he is a real drink drive killer.
If it's not this advert, then it's another drink drive advert which used a real drink drive killer.
You are correct sir. It's why it hit so hard.
Yeah, this ad brought up some bad memories of a family friends mother and daughter being killed by a drunk driver. His worst injury was a dislocated knee cap. A year later Michelle's bedroom (the 16yo daughter) was untouched. It had her school bag on her bed and her school uniform on the floor, she and her mother had just gone to the shops. That was probably 45 years ago, seeing her room like that still haunts me.
I think that other countries like Australia, used the idea and had convicted Drink drivers do the advert.
@@utha2665 One of my cousins was killed by a taxi driver 9 years ago.
The taxi driver thought she was "a stone, hitting his windscreen" so he drove off leaving her to die in the road.
It went to court in 2016, and the jury believed his nonsense story, so he got away with murder.
He didn't even get anything for careless driving, never mind a sentence for hit and run or manslaughter.
The Durham Constabulary have videos where intoxicated drivers are being arrested. It is scary how many of them claim they are not bad people.
Samaritians is like a crisis line but they also offer support for people facing homelessness and offer support for mental health
Not really - they are there for people who have lost all hope, most especially people considering suicide.
Not really anything to do with anything else but that.
@birdieg3012 when i was facing homelessness after i was issued a section 21 last year the council and CAB told me to speak to samaritians for support and advice they are there for alot more than mental health im just speaking from my experience
@@hannahhammond1993 I strongly suspect that they sensed that you were desperate, nothing else, and that is what Samaritans specialise in - helping people in despair.
If you look at their own website, it focuses almost entirely upon (preventing) suicide.
I used to work with one of their volunteers and it was a very unkind joke when people spokeabout him as he was extremely dour and his name, which is never used within Samaritans, was (hopefully still is) Gerald Death.
@@hannahhammond1993 Good to see that you seem to have made it through too.
Good luck.
@@birdieg3012 - No, you need to check again.
I stopped smoking at 36 . Then two months later had a stroke and a further 19 mini strokes (T.I.A’s) after. I’m now nearly 60 and still don’t regret giving up . Good on you for giving up smoking vapes ❤
Uk PSAs dont fuck around....
The one using pink Floyd's music is one of my favorites
So sweet that you are such an empath and feel so much from these PSAs. Thanks for the reaction video and go pick up my packages! 😆
I smoked from the age of around 19, up until I was 41. After numerous failed attempts to kick the habit, I smoked my last cigarette on November 4th 1999; (I remember the date especially, because I kept my lighter to light my kid's fireworks on the 5th and then threw it away,) so this November, I'll have been smoke/nicotine free for 25 years, but I still class myself as a smoker, even though, specifically, a smoker who "hasn't had a cigarette for some time".
Nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs in existence, and some people say that you're never totally free of the hooks it has into you.
Even now in my 60s, on the rare occasions they show someone in a TV program 'lighting up', I often find myself reaching for the cigarettes, lighter and ash tray that used to be on my side table, (but haven't been for almost a quarter of a century!) I realise almost immediately what I'm doing, but it kind of scares me, that the monster that IS nicotine addiction still has a (slight?) hold on me after all this time!
My Doctor says that the affected parts of my lungs are probably 'pink' again by now, but the parts of my mind that nicotine addiction affected still have some way to go!
So true ,
Well done, Dave 👍
Hit me at 30mph and there’s an 80% I’ll live,
Hit me at 40mph and there’s an 80% chance I’ll die.
I remember the car seatbelt advert. I was young and it scared me when I saw it. Brutal ad
Im in the UK and seen al of these adverts and i repressed them to the back of my mind. Brought back all of the trauma again.
I'm in the UK, too. HELP. I think I'm desensitised!
Samaritans are a 24/7 helpline for anyone having a crisis and needing to talk to someone. The operators are trained to listen and give advice if necessary. Our PSA ads are often graphic but efffective.
We have many public firework displays now and fireworks are much more expensive than they used to be. Plus a lot of areas in the UK are smoke free zones, so people cannot have bonfires in their own gardens. When I was a child in the 50's there was more sense of community. We had a street communal bonfire, all the Mum's did the catering and our fireworks were put in a biscuit tin, we chose which one to light but the Dad's did the handling. The older kids collected old furniture etc for the bonfire and the Dad's built it. The smaller kids made the Guy Fawkes for the top.
I remember the seat belt advert it traumatised me too but I always wear a seat belt
Those 'Quit Smoking' ads are going to be replaced with 'Stop Vaping' ads soon! 🙃
Think! Has stayed with me all these years. Never ever forgot that one😢
You want to watch a long video called 'Appache'.from the 1970s.We were shown it several times just before the long summer holidays.I don't think urban and suburban kids got to see it, although it was on television a while after we'd been shown it at school. The film was made especially for rural schoolchildren, and, believe me,it worked (although had we seen it , a couple of years earlier, it might have saved one child).
When my Mum saw it on telly she couldn't believe we had been shown it in Primary school, but that's the whole point of the film.Even now,I don't forget it. Harrowing ,but with such an important message. All rural children should be shown it these days.Yes,it will upset them, but it's why you remember it's message.
The one about black water, and all the ones about 'in the event of a nuclear warning..........'
We kids lived in abject fear most of the time, but we managed to enjoy ourselves somehow.🤭👍🏼🇬🇧❤️❤️❤️
This is probably the most impactful PSAs I've ever seen. Thanks! BTW I love watching you and Anna.
The Samaritans also work in prisons.
I was trained by them to be a Listener for other inmates on the inside. Someone other prisoners could speak with, in confidence, with no judgement.
Kind of like a priest, I found most people just needed a little help to see things another way, and realise their present situation/circumstances are only temporary, but there were certainly more challenging moments though, and you can't always help everyone.
I have been the last person to speak with someone. It was on one of the few occasions when I wasn't requested by the inmate themselves, but by the officers, as they were concerned for him and hoped I'd be able to make a difference. Unfortunately I couldn't.
I found out the following day, and for a few days after, I considered packing it in, until I was asked to speak to someone again, a couple of nights later... I didn't think, I just went, and I was glad I did, because it made a difference.
The Samaritans are volunteers. They don't have all the answers and they don't get everything right all the time, but they're are there and they do care.
If you live in a rural/farming area, you should watch a PSA called APACHES - it scared the bejaysus out of me when they showed it at my school - and
I was one of the older kids that saw it
This. I saw it in primary school because we were in a rural area. Never forgot it. The girl who drank...well, you know. That was the WORST.
I remember seeing these on tv when I was growing up, they were very effective.
Used to work for a Firework display company. Some of the injuries I have seen are horrific.
About the natural born smoker advert, there as a second one with a baby in a crib surrounded by cigarette smoke that looked like a mini Voldemort. The advert was banned after approximately 5 days...
I'm having some flashbacks 😳. They were doing their job then - I freak out if anyone's in a car without their belt on!
There are still countries where it's not mandatory to wear a seatbelt, what is wrong with them?
Samaritians is like a Councilling and they offer support to people being evicted but they also help people in mental health crisis
Hey JT, the Samaritans is a charity in the UK that help people with thoughts of self harm.
I work in the media and advertising field (WPP, OMG and Publicis) and have been based all over the world. Must say, the UK Creative agencies are top-notch.
The seat belt won worked really well. It stays in my mind to this day and wife even made reference to it the other day to explain to one of our kids why they need to wear their seat belts.
The firework one really hits home. My grandfather lost the sight in one eye when he was 14 after someone threw a rocket firework into a bonfire, instead of going up the firework went through and hit him in the eye.
yes semaritans is a help line for people and the music on that ad was pink floyd too brill band
The smoking ones hit home. I was a smoker for 30 years and now have Chronic lung disease, there is no cure.
Samaritans are there for ppl who need to talk when life gets on top of them and need to talk and have a outlet fr whatever reason. I've had to use them quite a few times.
I'm sorry you have needed them but very happy they helped x
@Psylaine64 As a few ppl have said, Samaritans don't judge, and they listen when friends/families will ask questions you may not want to answer. I bottle a lot of stuff up so when necessary they help.
You saying 'regularly' is like a Scottish person saying 'purple burglar alarm'! It is a thing of beauty my friend! 😂
Check out the British Rail PSA's, the kid who gets his legs cut off.. We were shown that in school when I was around 6 or 7... We were made of tough stuff in Britain in the 90's!
They are there every minute of every day.....they've helped thousands upon thousands of people in the darkest of moments. From the very young to the very old.
One I remember seeing when I was younger - starring actor Christopher Eccleston in a car crash. Found it Scary & graphic.
You missed out the 1970s British public information films, 'Protect & Survive - 1970's UK Public infommercials On Nuclear War Preparation.' As a kid in the 1980s seeing these on TV was scary. Nuclear war with the USSR seemed imminent. I think I had realised even then, that doing things that were suggested, like hiding under the kitchen table were not going to be of much help against a nuclear bomb.
More than 20 years ago, I found myself creating a PSA for my A Level course. It really made me think about the challenging emotional landscapes that creators must navigate while producing these pieces. Our experience was intense and often difficult, but in the end, we triumphed by securing second place in a national competition, which was quite an achievement!
I think I remember most of these. Another reason generation x is tough as old boots and scarred in equal measure 😂
I only saw the Seat belt one on telly, that and a radio add they were running at the same time...I ALWAYS put my seatbelt on.
The reason for the screaming phone was in relation to people crying out for help by calling the samaratans who will speak to you and help you in a time of need.
the Think! adverts always hit hard. I only saw them really in the 2000s, but I remember them, man.
I think most of us have a word we struggle with. Mine’s dominoes, I always want to say donniemoes (I wrote it as phonetically as I could), but basically my instinct is to switch the m and n and have to pause before saying it…luckily it rarely comes up in conversation.
I’m pretty sure that the organisation of The Samaritans is named after the story of the Good Samaritan from the Bible, which is a tale that we are taught as children, so the name of the organisation is synonymous with strangers who are there to offer help and support when others may not be able or willing to. But they have both buildings that people can visit (though these may no longer be commonplace due to most people having a mobile) and phone lines.
Mines is so weird lol . The word i dont say correct is sooo feckin easy aswell. 'HOLD', i think I'm saying hold but seemingly iit sounds more like ' HEEY OLD'. (spelled phonetically.) Im Scottish so the accent doesnt help either 😂 .
I’m Scottish too, so there are some words that we just pronounce differently. Like po-yum instead of poem or lick-o-riss instead of lick-o-rish but I think those are just the influences of the Scots language. You could always go full on Scots and say hud instead of hold 😊
Looking studious with the specs on. Ooohhh, suit you, Sir!*
*(It's from the Fast Show, I'm not coming on to you 😂).
You're right to say you don't forget these. Because of the " Julie" one where her son kills her from the back seat, i always make sure everyone is buckled up in the back since then.
The first one about British being prosecuted for having relations with minors abroad, is due to the fact in some countries the age of consent is a lot lower, so certain individuals would go there & technically not break any laws because it would be legal over there. But our country decided that because you are a British citizen, it should still be considered a crime.
And rightly so.
I'd never seen that one but glad it was there
That's not accurate at all. Don't make shit up based on your prejudice and your assumptions that we are better than other countries.
What it actually is is that sexual predators from Europe will go to countries like Thailand (hence the accent in the PSA) that struggle to police prostitution properly because of organised crime. It absolutely is illegal and has nothing to do with lower ages of consent...they just don't have local prostitution rings under control because they are still a developing country. One of the things that drives this problem is sex tourism...because the exchange rate means foreigners are comparatively rich compared to locals and that makes providing services to tourists highly profitable for the traffickers.
The problem is, once the tourists leave the country, they'd need to be deported back there from Europe in order to face prosecution under local law, and that rarely happens. They go over, commit a crime, immediately leave, never go back there...and because the British government wont deport them back, they get away with it. It absolutely is NOT that the UK government wants to prosecute them and the Thai government doesn't care...it's the EXACT fucking opposite. The Thai government wants to prosecute them....the BRITISH government doesn't care.
The simple fact of the matter is that current British foreign policy makes not deporting British citizens a higher priority than bringing child rapists to justice. We aren't the good guys here.
The samaritans are a service that just listens to you and will try to provide help. Sometimes being able to unload on a stranger is better than talking to a friend. The Samaritans are also well known for talking people down from suicidal positions.
Even after almost 60 years of seeing this sort of thing on UK TV (we didn't get a set until I was 8) they still can hit hard.
You did well to get so far.
PSA's were harrowing! I haven't seen a lot of those featured here but by god they get the message across!
Well done for getting as far through the video as you could buddy.
I've watched that particular video and I could only do it in two different sittings, it's rough
I remember a few years back when you walked through the woods and were talking about your vap habit at the time and how depressed you were and how you were trying to come off them, I'm glad to hear you succeeded.
Thank you JT for doing this ✌️♥️
You should watch Northern Irish road safety ads next, they’re very wholesome and fun
Back in the day, years and years ago, when I had debt problems, work problems and family problems - all hitting me at the same time, I turned to The Samaritans when I had nowhere else to turn. I came away initially dissatisfied, because apart from listening, they offered no obvious solutions to ease my emotional and mental turmoil, but nevertheless I pulled through it all, and looking back I realise that I probably wouldn't have done, if it hadn't been for the fact that the Samaritans were there to listen, because in many cases that's all that's needed - someone to listen.
Yes, with regards to the first video, legislation has been put in place in the UK that means that a UK national who commits a sexual offence against a child while outside of the UK can be charged with, and prosecuted for, that crime in the UK.
Hi JT, the Samaritans is a charity that helps people who needsomeone to talk to when they are in crisis. Suicidal thoughts etc.
Think a free counselling line.
You are a diamond geezer JT, and that's a big compliment ❤❤👵🏴🌹🌹🌹
The Mum who knew her killer in the car, I remember that well. No messing about in UK PSAs, some of the newer ones are as brutal.
Does anyone else remember the ‘think!’ PSA that had (I think) real footage of someone being hit by a car? Traumatised me for life that one. And the one with the little girl that gets hit by a car and it says ‘if you hit me at 40 there’s an 80% chance I’ll die’.
Defo want to see more. They're nostalgic but also still incredibly relevant.
I think the world should see in all honesty. The reality of life. The consequences of actions. The need to think.
The first Public Information Film (PIF, as they are called in the UK), is a tricky one, given that the nation's public broadcaster, the bbc has hidden and protected some of the worst offenders of this kind, often apparently, with the help of MPs, like Keir Starmer, when he was Director of Public Prosecutions from 2008 to 2013, when the 'Jimmy Saville scandal' was exposed and somehow, never investigated to a judgement. So while a message that many would support, MPs generally won't do anything about it.
See if you can hunt out the ‘Charlie says’ U.K. PSA’s from the 1970’s - Charlie is a cat and its owner is a little boy - they are animated, cartoon-like, but they have a serious message behind them.
The parody a few years ago about our King "prince Charlie says take homeopathy for your condition" , the person died after neglecting proper medicine. The moral "Taking medical advice from an untrained aristocrat is about as much use as talking to your cat."
The rear seatbelt add worked on my dad. He would not put it on. He was quite old at the time. After that add he always wore it.
No way if I caught a new upload I found this channel yesterday and I’ve been binge watching your content and I just saw this video appear on my subscribe feed❤
I was in my last year of Junior school in the UK in 1972, so 10 years old. We were shown a number of films in the hall on sex education and health. Two were warning about smoking. One showed people who had smoked and had lung cancer and other lung diseases. The other was a cartoon, think it was called 'F*g Alley' and featured a character called Nick o'Tene who was trying to get kids to smoke. Those films scared the pants off me, and gave me sleepless nights for several weeks. But they worked. I never have tried a single cigarette, not even a drag off one.
Brilliant video buddy i respect and thank you for your time and effort on your great content. Also do 1 about about drink driving ads/campaigns
I remember the backseat one, I don't move the car unless you clunk clunk click
Samaritans is a Criris Line who deal with mental health, abuse, relationship stuff and homelessness amongst other stuff
I just dookied my draws 🤣🤣
I love how you compare vaping to smoking.
You sweet summer child
When someone gets desperately beyond their tether and everything seems too much to stand, the Samaritans are there to listen, no matter what.
The one I remember from the 80’s or 90’s was the couple coming home and unlocking their front door!
Brian I can smell gas!! Then she’s switching the light switch on and he shouts No! 😮
I didn’t jt remember some of these but I remember the format, and they always hit hard.
Samaritans is a help line that anyone can ring who is having a crisis in their life.
we brits never do things by half, its all out
The seat belt one was the reason my brother didn't want to drive
It really freaked him out. He 40 and still feels uneasy in a car.
I've rang the Samaritans before now. I was at a loose end and I just rang as I needed to get stuff of my chest.
As for these PSA ads, you won't see these in such detail as we live in an age people getting offended for stupid things.
My mums name is julie and before every car journery as kids she would always say "julie knew her killer" and we would all make sure our belts were on.
Yes a part 2 please
And yet there are still worse out there, centring around the 70's and 80's. The Spirit of Dark & Lonely Water was both trippy and terrifying. Rabies Means Death pure nightmare fuel, and the greatest ever "Jimmy" getting cooked after breaking into a substation.
Along with Jimmy don't forget the lad climbing the pylon to get the kite, complete with charred corpse falling to the ground, you know, to really drive the point home if we didn't already get it.
Do some Christmas adverts before the rest of the psa’s to heal up a bit.
When I started working after leaving school in the mid 70s the factory safety films that we were shown were pretty horrific
I remember watching your vido when you detroyed your vape. Best thing you ever did. That and chosing to be with the wonderful Anna
I knew the mother knowing her killer would get you! I remember the day that was on TV, there is also a drink driving on where a woman goes into the pub it is on you tube it's a good one.. I remember that being on TV too the UK was known fro not sugar coating it's adverts...
These were really hard ones to watch. The Samaritans are an organisation that is free to access if you are struggling with mental stress and feelings of self harm. . ❤❤❤
Now do Northern Ireland ones. Our road safety ones were absolutely brutal. Oh and we had one to encourage people to tout on paramilitaries to the police kid watches his dad get shredded by an uzi on a stair case.
i remember most of these growing up
The Samaritans is a crisis line for people who are very close to committing suicide for whatever reasons, but try to get help if they can - from anywhere!
Have you done the nspcc "Tommy doesn't cry anymore, he knows no-one is coming" one yet? That one was impactful
Just starting this video, have been hesitant for a while as the thumbnail brings back the traumatisation
Please do a follow up, maybe with Anna? So you can see more.
I don't think we show these PSAs enough anymore. We really need to
I've seen the Think ones on youtube ads. and Think is still ongoing, I think.
Samaritians is a charity. It is a phoneline that is open 24/7 for Anyone that is for anyone in a crisis they don't judge they are just there to listen 😊
We need these PSAs still, I'm afraid. Too many drug/drunk drivers walking away after killing people. And we underestimate what others are going through. TV shouldn't all be soap powder and 'I'm worth it' rubbish, flogging cars with artsy-fartsy aspirationals and the 'perfect' family life. Something realistic, educational and helpful is what's needed.
