- The Bulls made sure to win Game 5 of the 1993 NBA Eastern Conference Finals by denying Charles Smith to make a layup four times in five seconds. Neil Funk and Tom Boerwinkle have the call.
I remember this game like it was yesterday. I was in 7th grade and had to go to bed early, but I remember listening to this broadcast on my radio. I also remember how tough of a series it was and how tough it was to win in New York for the Bulls. Great memories back when the NBA was entertaining, competitive, and more of a man's game.
Best defensive stance in the history of the nba
Man what a great call by the announcers. One of my best Bulls moments ever!!!!
Whether it was NBC's Marv Albert or the Bulls' Neil Funk, all you seem to hear from the sequence was "Smith...Smith...Smith...Smith..."
They should’ve been hollering out, “Stiff, Stiff, Stiff, Stiff..”
@@markgaston4416 LMAO. Poor Smith. He was a good player (20 ppg scorer for Clippers before joining Knicks), but that's all he will be remembered for. Honestly, I think he was fouled at least once in that sequence. But Knicks lost not just because of Smith but due to key missed free throws in last minute.
@@Milordvega Yeah, I remember him during the Clipper stint. During a winnable Game 5 series finale in the playoffs, he was shooting and bricking 20 ft fallaways. The Clippers went on to lose that series. So annoying because Smith could’ve been the difference maker in that game and series, but all he made with the Clippers was a lot of money.
@@MilordvegaThe strip and blocks looked clean to me
"...and this crowd is STUNNED!" Glorious.
Imagine listening to this while driving or something. My heart might've exploded!
Smith slamming that ball was so funny to me lolol
The overall effort from all 5ive defenders was something special.
My favorite Bulls game of all time. What a relief they won that game, had they not in my opinion, they wouldn't have advanced to the finals.
I think that the players realized that as well because you couldd see the sense of urgency and finally relief and excitement after pulling it out.
They still would have found a way.
Mine too bro.my favorite bulls win of all time. I remember being so happy when they won this game the Knicks were so tough in the Garden.
I was at work listening on the radio, this was my all time favorite 90's bulls moment, what a great game and great call by Neil funk
Great call!!!
Listen to Neil funk's call of bulls 4th quarter comeback in 1992 finals game 6 vs Portland. Goosebumps.
Neil funk was the goat
One of the funniest moments in NBA history the folly of Charles smith 😅😅😂
Pippen puts the clamps on Smith

Score was actually Bulls 97 - Knicks 94. The announcers were so excited that they didn't pay attention to B.J. Armstrong's buzzer beating layup.

I was to focused on the Neil Funk Tom Boerwinkle audio you posted (WGN)
@@ericm242910what's the Radio call sounds
Michael Jordan had a triple double in this game and scored the last 16 points for the Bulls to put them in a position to win.
Jordan had 29 points 14 assists and 10 rebounds.
That Doberman D was real.
Bulls were money in game five's....never went to a game 7 in 6 finals....on and on. A joy to watch.
Neil Funk was behind with the scoring. He said 95-94. The final score was actually 97-94. Maybe he thought Armstrong's basket was late, but it was already out of his hands before the clock ran out.
@ Andrew Home. It doesn't matter either way, they won the game. The pass ahead to Armstrong was more or less to try and run out the last few seconds of the clock.
That SORRY hack, Charles Smith!! If he dunks ONE of those balls, there is a Game 7 in New York. Then, Jordan has to rely on his “convenience players” to help him win a Game 7 on the road.
The ironic thing was, this is the same Charles Smith who was overhyped for tearing down a backboard on a dunk while at Pitt.
I was in 7th grade when I saw this.
Michael passes the ball to Armstrong who is open for an easy basket
Pippen blocks Smith 2x
It's just not the same as Marv Albert calling it.
Spitdeezbars well I'm from Chicago so I disagree. Also, at the time, when Marv wasn't calling games on NBC, he called Knicks games locally on MSG. So yeah, I definitely preferred the Bulls radio network version.
Neil Funk and Tom Boerwinkle...the greatest!
@@ericm242910 Well we prefer Marv because he is much better.
Huh? This call by Neil Funk is one of the best in town calls we have. Ever!
@@JayDamaso78 Better how? Ya man called out the wrong score at the end. Bulls were already up 95-94. That Armstrong layup made it 97-94. Forgive me for wanting excitement and accuracy in my commentating.
From Charles Smith to Jared Allen
I remember this game and I know bulls fans are not going to like what I'm going to say but that being said it is what it is. It's easy to say Charles Smith dunk the ball but it's kind of hard to do when you getting fouled by three people. Because let's not pretend that even though they're making a play in the ball that they're not clobbering him at the same time. Once maybe I can see but over and over again like that. Come on man, bulls got the call cuz it's the bulls and they had the GOAT NBA franchise on that team. Like I said it is but I'm not going to sit here and pretend like the bulls did something great. If anything it was that Charles Smith didn't get the job done because no matter if it's in MSG or not the rest are not going to call the game straight down the line in that favor so he should have not expected to go up weak like that. I'm not upset at him, I don't dislike the bulls either. Those were great games. Those matchups really made basketball in the NBA. I wouldn't change them or their outcomes for the world.
Where exactly in the replay is Smith fouled? The camera is right there and there are plenty of videos where you can watch it in slow motion. At no point is Smith hit in the hand or hit in the body where a foul should have been called.
The refs gave you a phantom foul call on Pippen at the end of Game 5 of the 1994 Series - otherwise, we'd have beaten your Knicks yet again (without MJ).
I'm a Knick fan and went over the sequence time and time again. There was no foul.
You're only ruining it for yourself, or you're just lacking knowledge of the game. You're ruining it for yourself because if you think Jordan/Bulls got special treatment on this play, then you'd be ignoring Ewing getting special treatment :03 seconds before this play occured when he barelled over a defender in the lane falling over him which could (SHOULD) have been called a CHARGING foul. But it wasn't. It wasn't because the rules back then supported Refs "swallowing the whistle" to not have games decided by FTs and rather by play.
So, if YOU believe a foul was committed at all in this sequence, an ACTUAL foul that occurred happened seconds before and would have made this sequence moot and given Chicago the ball. And Chicago wins.
Secondly, you're ruining the greatest defensive sequence in basketball history because this sequence has been analyzed from the angle of under the basket in a frame by frame coverage and there is literally NO FOULS occurring. It is a clean defensive sequence even IF the Refs wanted to call it by-the-book or by the "swallow the whistle" rules. Chicago wins.
Come down to reality and allow yourself to enjoy this as a piece of wonderful NBA history.
I may be a Bulls fan but I'm also a big Knick fan from that era.
