I had lived for long in 5 countries including USA and UK. It's not opportunity rather its escape from responsibility. Movement is not just from country to country. It's from village to city, city to metro, etc. Who wants to take care of old parents, social responsibility? It's always easy to have life without responsibility. I had very easy life outside India but didn't see any purpose as life in western countries is highly monotonous.

My insurance maturity amount, my retirement security my dream house and my dream business startup were all possible to me before the age of 35 just because of my job in norway which is just for 5 years. It is a very general stereotyping. You do not need to stay under the same roof to take responsibility of your parents. Most of my friends bought a home for their parents in India before turning 30 which is impossible to do if you work in India & they did this while they were living on rent. While people living with their parents under the same roof still use their parents money to buy iPhones & weddings. Offcourse there are different kinds on people on both the sides & everything is a personal choice. You can choose to live abroad & make your parents experience that part of the world too.

Despite all the shortcomings in West and good things in India, there's one more aspect which upper middle class Indians look up to and that is crime and corruption. Indian police, judiciary and bureaucracy is a nightmare. In India, as a nuclear family household, aim to cross 60 lacs per year after taxes (5 lacs pm in hand), and you will clearly see why India is a better choice. In Bangalore - Whitefield, where I live there are many families in my apartment complex who earn more than this, and quality of life here is great. There are no work-life balance issues in good tech companies (Intel, Cisco, Qualcomm, Unilever etc), and the quality of education in IB schools is very good. Yes, many Indians would have given up on their citizenships, but in my social circle, many who were working abroad came back here because life is better here after a certain income level. Also, many do not even accept opportunities to go aboard because they will have to give up on their set life here. And PPP really makes you rethink about opportunities abroad when your income in India is also high.
In short, wherever you decide to stay, if your income is high you will be content and happy.

With that said, I wonder if in your comparison of a $100k salary in NYC v/s India, you aren't using your own experience from 10 years ago to judge. Because post QE, real estate prices and rentals shot up in the US and especially in NYC and Silicon Valley. So a $100k salary today in these places won't fetch what it used to, which means you have to compete for $200k+ jobs. And this is harder now with recession in the US as well. None of which is to say it is a bad idea to pursue a career in the US, especially in fields where they're doing better and more impactful work than in India but that people should know the reality of what it means to go there today vis a vis up to 2008 or so.

I think going past these small countries is a big feat in itself (knowing we were looted by colonialists to the bare bones) but small when you see where India (Indians have and will always been smart) should and can be. I think we need a lot to change in India and we need to increase our GDP to $20T by 2040 and government needs to invest a lot on socio-economic development and improving HDI across India.

Staying back is not the only symbol of patriotism. Going out, winning in a competetive world and then helping the motherland from wherever you are--after chieving your potential--is also patriatism. There can be nothing more satisfying than individual growth which results in give-back to India. Well said.

You have highlighted the positive side of migrating aboad for better work culture and very good quality of life, but ultimately countries like US, Europe, Australia benefit much more than India as all those who are migrating are highly intellectual and skilled people which are being used by those countries only to benefit more to them, If in India work culture, quality of life is not good, then it needs to improved, we cannot remain complacent just because migrated people send their hard earned money to their relatives back in India. It is just like laboureres are migrating from backward areas like Bihar, Jharkhand, Odissha, U.P. to Mumbai and Delhi and some South Indian Cities, they too earn better than what they can earn there in home state, but has that status changed over the last 20 to 30 years. Those states are still backward in terms of education, healthcare, law and order, and lot many other things. Same way compare our country with other developed countries, we still lag far behind them and will continue to lag unless all those negative things for which our people are migrating is not taken care of. Who is responsible for all this situation, ofcource not the people who are migrating, because the very same people do exceptionally well when they go abroad, so the problem lies within ourselves, but unfortunately our country is being plundered by cheap criminal minded politicians who in turn try to deflect the focus from real issues to fake religious issues and fake patrotiasm etc..

    1) Immigration to US doesnt have labours like those in Middle East; hence high earning potential and growth.
    2) Number of citizenship granted is a measure of people who left India 8-15 years ago. If anyone has spent so much time, they tend to invest in houses, kids schooling takes priority and finding jobs in India takes time. Majority of the people who opt for other passport is for the travel flexibility
    3. Satya Nadela and Sunder Pichai left India 20+ years ago. Condition wasnt great at the time.
    4. Work culture is similar. Every chance they get, they will ask you when you would leave the country. There is always a glass ceiling in terms of promotions.
    5. Educational institutions are transforming. PG schools in India have one of the best quality infrastructure. Dont compare what you get in US, you wonldnt be willing to pay that much tuition fees in India.
    6. All this topics arent about people under poverty line. They arent looking to immigrate. They get free food, free medical as opposed to 12+ hours queue and more US$ 50,000 expense everytime you visit a hospital..
    7. Inequality in wealth is global phenomenon.
8.. anyway.. you are trying to secure your business.

Those are two different levels of our identity and they have different interests. The work that we do outside contributes to the outsider's growth which stands directly against our own. The choice can be ours, sure, but let's be clear about what we are choosing between. Love your content ❤. Jai Hind.

    Quick questions mam for you
What's the cost of education for a student in the US? How many actually are able to do college? (The fact is recent student's debt waiver grim government is a short terminal bailout for the huge debt students are carrying on them) So please don't claim as a balanced view if you can't put it straight.
Secondly, about resources I agree that US is resourcesful. You are comparing a 21 T versus 4T economy. Yet I would highlight that the technology India has now a days is almost at par with that in the US.
Don't know who taught you in India I am proud of of all my teachers back in India and owing to which I landed a direct scientist job in the US.Only Disgruntled would be those who blew their parents money in doing an expensive MS and didn't get a job and are burned with education loan back home.
And about Pichai and all, just leave them alone. They have achieved it all in the US and can't be yardstick for everything.
To me in early 2000s India was a decade behind the US for now its mere 5 years behind and we will close the gap soon than any of us can think.

Guys let me hoenstly tell you, the cost of education at a private liberal arts college in the USA is family ruining (~1.5 CR)! I ruined my and my families life by going there and I was a sincere student. The problem is that these colleges accept people not only on marks but on Essays. If you're a good writer you'll get in. But you might not be talented enough to do well in your major. Its the opposite problem of Indian competitive institutes. I went there and took physics because I wanted to be a scientist and knew I had no chance in India. However I didn't know that in college even after studying 4 hours a days i will just barely pass. I ruined my health trying to keep up and all parents savings. Now I'm back and cant get a job. For me it was the worst decision of my life. I could have just focused on health and happiness in high school, taken hotel management in India and lived a modest but happy and healthy life without any guilt of ruining my family.
To be fair there are also some of my indian classmates who partied like crazy in college but still got good marks and now work for Google and have very very high salaries. But in my experience for private liberal arts colleges on aggregate only 3 out of 10 are successful. The rest just wasted their parents money.
I've seen even Ivy league graduates suffer the same ruin. Don't go if you have to pay full tuition and your family's networth outside primary residence and business networth is less than 15 crore. Please don't. You'll be unable to live with the guilt.
Edit: Also people will shame you for coming back as a failure for coming back empty handed. If you're 200% sure you can get a job and somehow win the H1b lottery /manage a phd then go for it. Otherwise urban india also has options. And no shame involved.
Edit 2: Yes quality of professors at (good) private liberal arts colleges is Ivy league level! I was taught physics by David Griffiths himself! But I also feel at the undergraduate level sciene and math is mostly still learnt by text books. At berkely I hear that people watch lecture videos which I feel highlights the redundancy of lecturers at the undergraduate level.
The education process in the US is amazing of course but it isn't cost effective and not worth it if you're nor wealthy. What I valued the most was there was 0 ragging and no curfew. I was respected like an adult and could leave my dorm whenever I wanted. And teachers didn't make sarcastic comments. But nor did the students misbehave which I admired. When i sat in a few lectures at DU I was disappointed to see students actively chitchating and on their phones. Very very rare in my college but I hear in US state colleges (not prestigious) it's common.

Reed is a pricy college and I can imagine how difficulty it would be for an Indian parents to support (Steve Jobs drop out of Reed because he said he initially didn't realize how expensive it was, and after 6 moths he drops, realizing it's too expensive for his middle class American parents to support). Undergrad in US is extremely intense and tough, it's not like Indian University where you can study just before exam and pass with good marks. It's a complete different ballgame. Everyday class, quiz, homework and exam load and then several courses running parallel, all together is too intense and stressful. But US students are habituated with such intense pressure and stress since high school. But for Indian student it would be daunting to manage course load. I think you should Give GRE and and come back to US. Since you have a Physics major from Reed (does it mater whether you barely passed as as long you passed, as degree from Reed is highly valued in physics academia in US), most likely with a good GRE score you will forgiven for bad grades in undergrad and can get a PhD positions in physics/computer science/chemistry. Visa is not a problem for PhD (F1), and once you finish, you will get job immediately (too many jobs nowadays for physics grad), and will get GC immediately under special category (no limit & instant, not like 17 yr wait for software people). Another option is that you can do masters from DU or from some university (does not matter which one) in India just to pick up the grade little-bit and then give GRE.

My child grew up in 5 different countries, goes to an international school with kids from 60 different countries, and feels at home in different cultures. His best friends are British and Colombian. A true third culture kid. He speaks his Indian mother tongue fluently at home, English with an accent, and Spanish. He plans to study in Europe after school and doesn't want to settle in India either. I find the quality of life to be much, much higher abroad and you get to be who you are. Yes, we miss our families back home but they visit and they understand and respect our choices. Not all NRIs go abroad just to make money (I am an educator, so definitely not in for the money) or work in IT:-) I love my life and I know I privileged to have lived in some amazing places and have met some amazing people along the way. A bigger debate regarding foreign education which people forget is that most of the current universities are not able to catch up with the fast pace of the industry of the world especially silicon valley. Therefore I do not understand people stating the fact that universities anywhere, especially US are supreme or on the top of the world. If you are spending a lot of money(like around 150k-200k ) to have a foreign education that is delusional in my sense, especially when there is not a job or visa guarantee in US like in these layoffs and recession period. I agree that there are a lot better opportunities of jobs and research in US. Also, anyone should not blindly say that all the US infrastructure and systems are extremely good. If you have been to NYC you now that there are both good parts and bad parts of the city and you can even be a victim of thefts and gun violence. In short, my advice for anyone is to treat going to any foreign country especially US as an investment of your initial money and not a "pay and get" scheme and be scammed by any foreign visa agents. You are responsible for your budgets and the money and opportunities you get in any country whether India or abroad.

I feel ashamed seeing the comments over here. Let me assure you all of something: going abroad and studying/working there to gain experience and knowledge is absolutely fine. As someone who's planning to go abroad myself, I have no qualms about people thinking that way. There is an ardent need for new ideas and new perspectives in this country, and that's a fact no one can deny. But what's appalling to see in the comments are the opinions of people who are ready to give up on their homeland because of what they call office politics, conservative attitudes, etc. It is high time for all the beautiful minds who have emigrated to other countries and gained immense experience to come back and fight for the development of their motherland. If you love Dubai or the US, that's good. Now, try to make your country surpass their standards. Whining and complaining have never helped anyone throughout history.
Just imagine if our ancestors, who became the founding fathers of modern India, had thought like all of you and been as cynical. India would still be under the thumbs of the British. Giving up on your Indian citizenship shows the cynical mindset these people have and thank God they chose to stay elsewhere. India doesn't need such a selfish mindset.

Few corrections to be made in this Video :
    1. India has already crossed UK and is the 5th largest economy. You have mentioned that its about to cross UK.
    2. We have seen the most number of layoffs in US and Europe in recent past than in India. India is still insulated in terms of layoffs.
    3. Quality of life has improved in India over the last 10 yrs. We do not have to wait for a doctor’s appointment for weeks in India and suffer. We get professional services like barber, carpenter, maids, electricians, etc at a low cost and readily available unlike in US and other European countries.
    4. Office politics and micromanagement: we cannot typecast these as an issue as these depends from people to people. I have seen managers from Germany and France who are utterly rude and treats Indians like trash.
I think this video is a little polarized and biased based on your own personal experience. I do agree with the education system and quality of professors. But rest of the facts needs to be validated.

Coming to India losing jobs in the outsourcing thing due to AI those are theoretical threats because when computer came people started raising concerns and I am sure there will be different kinds of jobs and we the Indians will learn and reach the goals. Education system needs a super lift I totally agree. யாதும் ஊரே யாவ௫ம் கேளிர் it’s a Tamil statement. I personally feel I have more options I can explore in india rather USA. There are handful of entrepreneurs in India as well just saying. Other side of the grass is always greener. Whatever it is and where ever we are experience is the real teacher. Kudos to your thoughts.

Bang on! Each point well elucidated with real examples. Office politics, work-life balance and time punching in Indian offices of even International companies is so true.
The points about GDP vs per capita is the factor of growth to be considered. In India, people succeed because of their hard work whether they remain in or out of the country. The huge population and disparity coupled with corruption make things so challenging for an aspiring student or working professional.

I dont deny a single thing you have mentioned but then a guy can go to USA only if he has money.
Money, where you come from, your life, your surroundings, what you see around you, who you meet has so much impact on your life. Its not you and i can change things here, government has a different base and rules in India, that has to change. In India, no ruch guy would think of all this. Regardless of his education, school, he can do good in life, live a good life. A upper middle call can easily go to USA if he a bit good in his studies. Rest all got to suffer.

The only reason why Indian people do not find Europe to be as suitable as the anglosphere, is, because of English language, and large pre existing Indian migrant populations.

very well brought out but the biggest difference perhaps is that people in the USA are lonely, most need mental health care, gun culture can be devastating, and hard to catch up with friends or family events, etc. People are happier with small purchases and validation in society. Reservation psycho fancy and politics are the biggest factors to leave India for work.

Comparing India with USA sounds so funny in every aspect. Had to stop listening this and had to write, there is not a single day in USA when mass shootings not happened and ppl are not dying. All across USA kids dying from mass shootings because of lunatic society.Usa being so called advanced couuntry with non existent healthcare. Dont become victim of such false propaganda of western world and only see problems in India. Not denying it has problems, but it still surpass in many aspects from rest of world considering its huge population. Indiad's caste system, politics has degraded the nation and needs to be fixed, which won't ever happen. Ppl should immigrate to other countries for better opportunity but still admire how the country with mamoth population still created life for so many, whereas it doesn't exist for many in rest of the world.

Quality of living is a perception. Happiness does not come just by moving abroad and earning high income. You will realize over a period of time. Each country has its own problems to deal with. To me, following what your goals are and what brings you happiness is the way to go. Do not follow simply because someone is giving list of bad vs good things. My mother may have her own flaws and issues, but she is the one who brought me up and nourished me until I am on my own. I wouldn't blame her on anything. Same goes with anyone's country where they grow up.

Ok. I am going to counter all your points as I watch your video. You talked about IIT and UPSC. These are government jobs. Ivy league colleges have a acceptance rate of less than 1% and even then there are no government jobs or college placements in the US. Also, you pay lakhs in college fee. Average college fee for Master's degree is 30 lakhs and I am not mentioning living cost here. The wealth distribution is even worst in US. They have monopoly markets, starting a business is almost impossible. Indians in US do well because majority of people who go there come from rich family backgrounds. I agree work environment is better in the US. But as she mentioned, she never had visa issues and had easy access to green card application, she has not faced true hardship what most of the people go through. On the other hand, if you are not so lucky, you will end up in H1B lottery where your chances of getting selected is 12% now. It might go down in future. While you wait for your H1B to get picked (sometimes 8 years), you have to take degrees and courses which means you keep paying US approx. ₹15 lakhs/year. There are no public transport in US. You cannot even go to a nearby shop on foot because you don't have footpaths. You have to buy a car. Also, while you wait on your visa, you cannot go to India. Some people haven't been home for 6-8 years now. Some people have missed their parents funeral because they could not travel due to their visa. I don't want to make this grim. You should come to US for your education if you have enough money and wish to acquire skills and partake in cutting edge research, but this cannot be an option for poor families or even for most middle class family as unlike India, education is very expensive in the US. On the other hand, I don't know this person who was in the video but I am very much sure that she came back to either join her family business or start her own business and doesn't mind spending lakhs of rupees in the US as her 20's was a big vacation. I have many friends who treat their education in the US that way and they are not wrong. It's an experience in itself. For people who know they are putting all their eggs in one basket and bet on getting success in the US, I am sorry to say but it feels like being a slave here if your stars are not allingned and you don't get visa approved in the lottery. So, my suggestion is that you do your research and take a desision. Every high return investment has risks and you should know your risk before investing.

And in 3 to 5 yrs you get to around 16 to 18 lakhs .
In our generation everybody did a second gig ( compares for weddings , bands , tutions etc ) .
