- The 2022 year is a strong players irons year. Several major manufacturers have released strong players irons recently, including the TaylorMade P770, Callaway Apex Pro 21, Titleist T100S, Mizuno Pro 223, and Srixon ZX7.
In this video, 2nd Swing master fitters Thomas Campbell and Danny Ferrell use Trackman to test each of these strong players irons head-to-head to identify the similarities and differences.

Just got the 223 and i love how soft they feel even on miss hits. Distance-wise they were also quite consistent on those miss hits
Play a ZX5/ZX7 combo set and very pleased.
An excellent combo!
Got fitted for the ZX7 irons a few months and love them. The P770s were nice as well, but the Srixon just performed a bit better with my swing. My distance control with these a lot better than any club I have ever owned.
The jumper on the Taylormade 770/790’s is exactly why I went with Mizuno. The Mizuno seems to be the most consistent iron numbers wise when you do hit a bad shot.
plus that mizuno feel!
I bought a new set of P770s last fall. I went back to my forged one-piece irons after a week. I just love the feel of true forged irons.
I agree, nothing like a forged high-carbon iron. I think a lot of people have stopped chasing distance and are starting to focus on feel and precision.
I'm getting fitted Saturday at 2nd Swing Scottsdale. Zx-7 wasn't on my radar, but someone at the range let me hit theirs and they were amazing. I'll definitely hit those in the fitting.
What irons did you end up going with? Thanks for choosing 2nd Swing for your fitting - Thomas
@@thomascampbellgolf I ended up going with the new Callaway Rogue ST Pros. Wasn't planning on hitting them but the fitter suggested it and I love them!

I got the T100s and love the way they look feel and perform
Appreciate your feedback - Thomas
I would go for the 225 in an heartbeat but of course. The first time I'm really consederating a mizuno they don't make in left. That sucks so much. Gonna try out the 223 and see how i like em..
Thought to out in some hours and tweak my swing also to get it more consistent until next years season.
I've got a fitting booked here in the UK on Friday. Those kind of irons are exactly what I'm looking for with the more forgiveing brother in the longer irons. My favourite so far is t100s/t200 for numbers and feel but they were stock fitted ones from.the others and numbers
T100S and T200 is an awesome combo. At address, the T200 barely looks any different than the T100S. But you will notice a big difference in sound and feel
@@2ndswing would cobra mim and weakened lofts on forged tec or 770/790 work just as well do you think
I tested all of these (with the exception of the Apex Pro) and the 223 won out for me. Based on my delivery I need a little more height and spin so these were a perfect match, and I’m a sucker for the buttery feel of Mizuno. I was most surprised by the ZX7 and P770 as neither really performed well for me….likely as these are both lower spin and not a good match for my swing. Moral of the story - get fit! Everyone swings it a little different and you shouldn’t go off someone else’s choice to make your decision.
You missed out apex pro is the best
I tested three of these (p770, apex pro, zx7) over five rounds on a full course and testing different shots and positions. To that I added the jpx921 sel and the pxg. In the end I almost went with mizuno sel but glad I chose the pxg as I get very precise numbers - tight dispersion and least drop off. Great sound, feel. Having had Taylor made before p760, callaway apex, and srixon glad I ended with pxg.
Great stuff! Glad you found an iron that works for you!
Which PXG's did you end up with?
@@TheDeepsilver the same as Lydia ko ☺️ the gen 3 p (gen 4 were released but at that time not available in leftie to test) with the mmt shaft which I have found really suit me - so much so that I have the same shaft in my hybrid (also Pxg proto) and my 3 wood (callaway epic speed). Went a different way with wedges than Pxg though- Ben hogan equlaizer ii and they are really good. Incidentally I tested also several other irons in addition before I finalised on the pxg. Testing in real world on the course made a big difference to when I just tried them in the range and indoors. So something in that too. Happy golfing
If only PXG wasn’t owned by a non apologetic elephant shooter who’s son plead guilty to assaulting his girlfriend.
@@Longarmshortarm no offense but he’s hardly responsible for his sons actions. The elephant thing I have no idea about.
ZX7 distance control is almost a straight line across...once one can control the club face then you know you've nailed the distances each time
Great test, I'm very happy with my Srixon Zx7 irons, I have to admit though the Mizuno Pro 225 does intrigue me.
ZX7s are awesome. No surprise you like them
By the numbers, it looks like the Srixons were the best across the board. Hottest (biggest smash factor and carry), and smallest deviation in pretty much every category… The distance dispersion was so tight.
Nice comparison. I don't see how anyone can go wrong playing any of
these irons. They are all so well crafted and they all deliver the goods.
I wonder if the horizontal dispersion Thomas saw with the Srixon ZX7
had anything to do with the unique sole design, which I believe
is more geared towards a higher angle of attack ?
You nailed it, Ray! The VT sole on the Srixon irons has been awesome in our fittings for players with steep angles of attacks. Makes the contact much cleaner, and that feedback has been the same both in the fitting bay and on the course with real grass
@@2ndswing what would you consider a steep angle of attack? -3 or more degress downd?
@@2ndswing Thanks for confirming this. The Srixons do look like sweet irons.
I appreciate your knowledge and feedback.

It’s a good test but PXG also should have been included.
Got fitted for both the P770 and the Pro223, and ended up ordering the Mizunos. Both felt very good, but the 223s just edged the 770s by a hair, and as I do not change my irons any other year, I felt the 223s would be best for me over time.
also looking at these two irons, gotta get back in the bay to retest both with some more shaft options
@@peterfebbraio250 received my new 223s from Mizuno 2 weeks ago, and can highly recommend them.
So based on this clearly the ZX7 should be on the top of the to try list - if of course you can get past the ‘big boy marketing’ of the other 4
Nice test. I’m definitely most interested in the Mizuno Pro 223s this year - I have a set on order to see if they can knock out my JPX 921 SEL. When I tested them I was blown away by how soft they are for such a forgiving, high-tech iron. Getting that extra forgiveness is awesome, but the only thing I’m worried about is losing too much spin vs. my 921 lefty Tour/Forged blend. Gotta get them both out for a few rounds to see if I’m sacrificing too much to get the 223’s forgiveness. Also really eager to see how the gapping works out on the 223s between the high-tech 7 iron and the 8 iron where they switch to the more one-piece construction.
wondering if you got both out for a side by side test yet?
Such an underrated channel. Subbed gentlemen.

Great comparison guys, I'm a lefty and in the market for new irons. I've played most brands over the past 25 years. For my ability, 8 handicap my favorite irons to date are the Titleist 755 model from the mid 90's! They have a nice blend of playability, feel, forgiveness and good length heel to toe but with a nice small to medium thick top line.
I went to my local "super store" yesterday and very little in stock for me as a lefty. I did find a set of the Pro 223's and Apex Pro's but that was it. One thing I noticed between these two was both had stock steel shafts, but the Mizuno's were about half inch longer. Not sure what that was about.
I'll have to hit these two models but just on looks alone I'm leaning toward the Mizuno's. The Callaway's look a little more compact. The Mizuno's may not be the longest, but their profile is similar to the 755's, and that buttery Mizuno feel is hard to resist when you try it!
Waiting on my T100S (5-GW) + 4 iron in T200. 2 deg flat. They will arrive mid april. Tour look, forgiving, thin sole and lot more distance with same club speed. T100S checked all my boxes for a new iron. When I had my custom fitting I also tested Apex Pro, Mizuno Pro 223 and Taylormade P770. None of them felt and looked as good as the T100S.
You'll love them
How have the 100s been? I got fitted and these were amazing. I hit my 7 iron further and straighter than my P790 6 iron. Had a beautiful penetrating ball flight with slight draw. I’m looking at ordering some this week.
@@Everythingis22 The T100S was great. Loved them. Now I gone the Wishon way and play the EQ1-NX one length clubs.
Just got fitted for zx7 can’t wait for arrival
Finally found a video I am interested in. Because I am crazy strong!
😂
Switched to 2021 t100s. Had blades, but bad strikes hurt and good ones spun back too much. T100 are now hop and stop with all irons, but will have the iron shot that goes an extra 20 yards. Still working on getting them dialed in.
Yeah that extra flier is one sacrifice of getting stronger lofted irons. However, T100 is usually pretty consistent...once you get them dialed in, should be game on
I have the 100-s on order. I actually laughed during the fitting because they were so good.
For the price its hard to go past the ZX7
First M223 and T100S….can’t wait to hit these irons
Great comparison guys! Always educational…I think I’m somewhat unique, but maybe not. I have no big issues with strike. Grew up on blades and just love the look, feel, and workability. However, 54 now, two hip replacements, and my 7 iron swing speed is about 80. So, I don’t want to give up the feel and size of the blade, but would like more help, especially in the longer irons (6 and 5). I’ve done combo sets before (MP 69/59) and Apex/Apex Pro that worked out well. I had a set of T100s irons that I loved, but I had the wrong shafts in them (in retrospect) so would up selling them instead of changing shafts (had PX 6.0 120g shafts). I’m currently gaming MP 221s with KBS Tour Lite shafts (100g) and they are soooo much better. But, would like a little more giddy up and help in the higher irons…Should I just go back to the 100S irons (soon to be 150 irons), or are there other options with smaller heads? I’ve looked at the MP 223s and haven’t hit them well. They do appear a bit on the big size for me. I’ve been trying to play a set of JPX 923 HMP that I was fitted for in February, but they are just too chunky for me…I’m hitting it all over the face compared to my 221s which I hit pretty solidly. I had a set of T200 irons last year that CC fitted me for, and hated them. They hit far and accurately with the LA Golf 85s shafts in them, but absolutely no feel and sounded terrible.
Nothing will beat T100/150 in looking like a blade. Feel-wise, 223 and ZX7 will be slightly better but are a bit chunky, which I don't mind at all. I wouldn't stray from those three, they are pretty clearly the 3 best players irons you can buy.
Been dying to try those t100. I've been using the Titleist ap3 for a few years now and looking for a potential upgrade.
Biggest thing you will notice is spin. T100 irons will spin more than AP3's and you will gain workability. If you are a pretty decent ball striker it is worth the upgrade. - Thomas
@@thomascampbellgolf Do they have similar forgiveness as the Ap3s?
Another great video, for me, you guys produce such good and relevant comparison videos which are right up my street, hard to beat 👍🏾👍🏾. Chris, UK.
Thanks for watching the channel. Please let us know if there is any video topics you want to see! - Thomas
@@thomascampbellgolf thanks Thomas, I think an interesting video would be one with Taylormade Sim or stealth driver and fairways fitted with there brand stock version of the Ventus vs the Velocore version so identify the difference in performance between the two
Just got my first set of fitted clubs P790s. Sorry to say I’m not a fan. I was playing the 2014 TM Tour Preferred Mcs. By far better feel. I’m a lefty so I think I might go for the Mizuno 223s as they are the only one they do for the Caggy handed
I really enjoy watching these comparisons. I play the original Calloway Apex Pro. I don’t like the sound of the new Apex Pro. I think the X Forged CB is a better option. Why don’t you have the lie angles of all these club adjusted to your swing? I believe it would affect feel, sound and spin rates. This would allow for a fair comparison. Thanks again!
Swinging 919 forged now will consider 223
Great review guys
How would u rank the forgiveness on off centre hits for these five irons?
Note: There is no tungsten in the Mizuno pro 223 nor will there be in the 243.
Important for ZX7 users/testers! You haven't lost swing speed when you hit these on trackman. For some reason trackman registers club speed wrong on these and smash is higher than what it really is. Must be the club tech and how soft the hit feels. Cross referenced with old clubs/zx7 on trackman/quad and quad gives same club speeds, yet trackman gives 3-4 mph less on zx7 (might be less or more depending on your speed and delivery). So the tester in this actually hit the last swings harder trying to get the "same" speed with other clubs. Edit. I'm loving these zx7 clubs!
I just ordered the Zx7s was going to blend them with the 5s but said what the heck hope I love them as well.
Good test guys, thanks! Does the higher smash factor of the Srixon mean much to you? Or, does it just mean Thomas hit 'em purer than the others?
Always love the videos - I'm always shocked at how much smash factor you're getting out of this. Do you see the same levels on course? Are you getting extra bounce/pinch on the matt? I don't get how you're getting 1.4 smash factors on a 7 iron.
Hi Ernst. The main difference is dynamic loft and attack angle. I compress the ball (dynamic loft 10 degrees lower than stated loft of the iron) and have a shallow attack angle which leads to a low spin loft. These irons also have less loft than a cavity back/blade by 2-3 degrees which also increases smash factor. You will see our outside videos are pretty similar off grass. I will add that I do pick the ball a little more off a mat its a bad habit that leads to a shallower attack angle but still able to get a smash over 1.4 outside with a 7i. - Thomas
Any thoughts on sole designs and AOA’s of golfers or is that not a huge consideration when fitting?
It is a huge consideration. Strike point is key. If you're fitter knows nothing about that walk away.
It's a big consideration our fitting team looks at in every iron fitting. We have seen a lot of success with Srixon irons for golfers with steeper angles of attack because of that VT sole
Would you eliminate the ZX7 with the V sole for a picker of the ball?
Thomas have you thought about a shoe change? I noticed your trail foot was slipping on quite a few shots.
Really wanted u guys to say and edit vid by letting us know that u made those adjustments to the club then show the difference in ball flight
Thanks for watching - Thomas
The reality is that once you take into account standard deviations and p- values all these irons perform functionally the same.
As I play i210s I am unlikely to change but I have tried the P770s and love the look and the T100s are just as good looking, but nothing feels like a Mizuno!
Loft is pretty similar so your correct they perform pretty similar. i210's are one of a kind of you need more spin and height they are incredible. I wish we could still fit them! - Thomas
When will we get an “off the shelf” gapping sesion and not just 7 irons?
1 day clubs will no longer be 7iron or 8 iron etc etc , they will instead have the loft number on them like wedges i.e 28 , 32 , 36 etc etc
Are the swing weights all the same in the irons tested? Just interested to find out if the srixons are heavier, and is that why the swing speed is lower.
They're all very similar, but we will verify and do a measurement
Perhaps that’s why there was a jump in added ball speeds with a slower club speed
The ball used is a Prov1 rcb? What is the rcb? It’s a different Prov1?
I believe it has something on it to use with flight monitors
Prov1 RCT
Pro V1 RCT (Radar Capture Technology). It's a Pro V1/Pro V1x that allows Trackman to capture data just a bit more accurately
Thomas is a Monster. Dude can smash a 7 iron!
Keep in mind it's not all about smashing irons far with irons! Height and landing angle is really important. - Thomas
I hope i someone can compare 223 vs 921 forged. Diff? what do i gain? and what do i lose by picking either?😩
Zx7 the best
Really guys how could you leave out the new i525 from your test?!!
That’s more in the players-distance iron category. More comparable to P790, T200, Mizuno Pro 225, etc
Tried them all multiple times an zx7 blows them all away every time and also is the only 1 that is not new this year cus they did not have to make new ones the other companies are still behind them..i went with accra iseris shafts however oban steel was a close 2nd , if i was not 40 turning 41 soon i would of went with oban steel but graphite iseries is almost as good an will be better for me in 2yrs then the obam steels would be
If this is a fitting why couldn’t u guys make the proper adjustments to the lie angles?
We can test different lies and lofts in fittings and do so. However this is a test comparing them stand spec v standard spec - Thomas
what are are you guys out of? Theres one in Philly about 6 hours away from me and I’d like to come get a full bag fitting but only if you have everything in left handed options. It’s so hard to find a fitter that has even 20% of their stock in lefty. Not fair
We film our videos in Minnesota however we do have two places up near you. Wilmington, DE & Columbia, MD. All our locations are well stocked in left handed fitting components- Thomas
So got fit into the 223s using the 7i….but in actual course play I tend to use more of the 8i down which are basically a slightly stronger 221. To me the dispersion can be a bit tricky. Have 7i that goes 175 (has tech and forgiveness)….then have an 8i (no tech) that “could” go 165 if pured, but can very easily go 145 if slightly mishit. To me he progression of the set it a bit aggressive….meaning taking tech from the JPX line (chromoly) and progressing it to miz 221 line. To me the gap between these lines is quite a lot for an average golfer.
Any thoughts on an alternative set with more consistency across the irons? Heard good things around the zx7….also considering PXG.
You bring up good points! The irons generally blend very well when talking about 7- 8 iron differences but I do suggest a gapping analysis to confirm. ZX7 is a great underrated option - Thomas
The TaylorMade P770 is the only iron in this test that has a hollow body design. I think that is is the reason that you got that "flyer" with it, and I have seen this happen with other hollow body models. I myself used to play Cobra F8 - yes it was long, but occasionally I would get that extra long one.
Good note here. That SpeedFoam hollow body construction definitely adds some explosiveness
Apex Pro is also hollow body
Mizuno is also hollow
@@cfnaround1585 225 is hollow. 223 is a cavity back - Mizuno calls it a " compact players cavity".
Apex pro and p770 are hollow body, mp223 is a players cavity with micro slot and forged chromoly (stronger metal and thinner face) for extra ball speed and forgiveness in the 7-4 iron - then the scoring iron’s (8-pw 1025 forged mild carbon steel)
My 921 Tours are prettier than all of those, feel amazing and are very forgiving. The only thing that could possibly knock them out of the bag is 923 Tours with a copper underlay.
I have 921 Tour and think T100S is way better in looks. And has thinner sole too.
@@SvingitGolf Nah. 921 Tour is much cleaner and classier than T100s. T100s is smaller at address. I'll give you that.
What handicap should be playing a 223? I’m about a 15, are these right or no
I would say 0-15 however I don't like using handicap as some golfers have a bad short game but are great ball strikers while others may be really good inside 100 yards but struggle with the irons - Thomas
Hey Thomas, how much more spin can you expect off grass vs the mats in studio?
Good question. It's going to be player dependent based on attack angle and how solid the contact is. If you hit it fat on a mat the ball will spin significantly less. For me i'm not hitting it fat but I have a slightly shallower attack angle inside from hitting so many balls off artificial turf I have a habit of picking it more which can lead to lower spin but in reality its not really that different on solid strikes - Thomas
tried all the mizuno easily above else, the flat lie angles is a pro style , i guess why mos of the mizuno guys are playing this cub the 223
The Mizuno MP 225 is the strong players iron not the 223.
Mizuno 225 is more of a players distance irons while 223 is more of a players iron with stronger loft (32* on a 7iron vs your traditional 34*) - Thomas
I think mizuno 225 pro is a better competitor to apex pro. They are both hollow forged face.
Thank you for watching! Pro 225 and Apex Pro are a couple degrees apart in loft but yes both hollow forged face - Thomas
Best one is cobra mim tour… then srixon then t100s. I’ve played all 3.. amazing. Don’t like mizuno because of turf interaction
That open statement was probably supposed to say, “do you like the look or a blade or players iron?” No one likes the look of a chunky ass cavity back iron.
Maybe that wasn’t an accident, you’ve just said something about loving the looks of a cavity back. I didn’t know that was a thing. The chunk, long blade length in mid to long irons, offset, hot face, etc..no thank you.
