- Asrarul Haq ‘Majaz’ (1911-1955) is considered to be one of the most loved poets of Urdu. He was just 44 when he died under mysterious circumstances. His nephew, poet, psychoanalyst and academic, Prof. Salman Akhtar, argues that Majaz, in fact, had been ‘self destructive’ and obsessed with ‘death’ from an early period in his life. He was ‘chronically’ suicidal, says Dr Akhtar in this interview with Pervaiz Alam.

What a wonderful talk; it’s very scientific and empathetic at the same time. We all still mourn a such early death of one of the most loved shayars of that time. Where can one read your article on this topic?
Majaz seemed an enigma due to the life he lived, the talent he had and the extremities he bordered. Dr Akhtar has broken down that quite well with his analysis!

You don’t die because you are thinking about dying, time of death is fixed, but circumstances differ, in Majaz, he wanted to hold a moon believed he should have it, started drinking at early age which became severe,and he died.
Dr Salman Akhtar is only exploring the psychological aspect of Majaz's depression.
