  • I've heard one Sleep Token song before and honestly didn't care for it. However I can't only listen to one song and cast off a band so I'm ready to give Sleep Token another shot!
Thanks for getting In The Pit! Have a song you think I would like? Leave a comment below and if I haven't heard it, I'll put it on the list.

The thing is, real Sleep Token fans weren't looking for this band. Personally, I came across this band purely by accident during a difficult period in my life, and I know that a lot of people did too. They're like a second chance at life. Like a fresh breath of air. Like fucking therapy... my life changed after I started listening to them. And honestly, there was not a day that I didn't think about them, that I didn't listen to their songs...
Just try listening to their songs with lyrics, it's a completely different experience

The hook that caught me into Sleep Token was watching II playing his offerings on UA-cam, I watched his technical ability just explode with Alkaline, absolutely blew me away, then I discovered the one song that pushed me off the cliff to completely fall for this band, which was Euclid! It’s been on repeat for two weeks now!

I very much enjoyed your honest reaction. It's refreshing. Being a huge ST fan, I'm biased of course, but this is definitely one of their "more accessible" songs.
The song that perked my ears up was Calcutta. I think you'd appreciate what he did with that and how it sits in modern music. Cheers!

It's performance art. All of it, the voice, the lyrics, the musicianship and live they are so DAMN GOOD! They put on an excellent show. The Summoning was when I first heard them, and i was hooked. They can do it all, rock, metal, hip hop, R,&B, Jazz, from the style of 80s ballads to the pop music of today. What intrigues us is the versatility of this band. They like to keep you guessing 😂. But definitely listen to some of their other songs. If you like really heavy songs then listen to Gods and Vore. Songs that has many genre changes would be The Summoning, Ascensionism, The Apparition, and Take Me Back To Eden. Their music lis like a movie set in a trilogy. Each album is a volume with each song laying out the story. Starting from the first album Sundowning with THE NIGHT DOES NOT BELONG TO GOD all the way thru THIS PLACE WILL BECOME YOUR TOMB, to the final album TAKE ME BACK TO EDEN and the last song Euclid. Euclid is so good, but it hits better when you've listened to the whole story. Since the last album ended the trilogy, their live show was even better because they played the songs in order like it was supposed to be heard. Best concert I've ever been to and that's saying something as i have been to SOOOOO many concerts. Bon Jovi, Kiss (3 times), Ozzy, Korn, Alice in Chains, Def Tones, Stone Sour to name a few 😂 so with Sleep Token, it's all of it that captures your soul. Performance art at its finest. Vessel's ( The singer) vocal range will shock you. It did me 😂. I actually thought it was a different singer on the song with him, but nope, he records the lyrics that he writes and does his own backup vocals and layers them thru most songs. For live shows they have a trio of women to do the background vocals while he sings the main parts. Idk what to tell you, you either like them or not. I hardly listen to anything else, since discovering them last year. Hopefully they will wear you down 😂 they are just that awesome. Not all songs are basic I assure you.
    Worship ❤

Sleep Token took a while to grow on me as well. I first heard about them in a video that Mark Holcomb in Periphery said he was listening to Sleep Token and I tried them out. They only had one full album out at the time and it didn't really resonate with me. Fast forward to when The Summoning came out and blew up. I was hooked. I love they way they use various genres in their sound to communicate the message they want to. To me, I had to find the part of their catalogue that I appreciated and it opened the door from there.
I also think you said it best when you mentioned that people's taste in music changes over time. I go through seasons where I can't get enough of Sleep Token, but I'm currently in a season where Knocked Loose and Bilmuri reign supreme. lol. It isn't that Sleep Token is bad, its just not what I want to listen to currently.

I'm a huge fan and I completely understand your feelings about this song. I NEVER listen to this one as I agree with you. Besides the amazing drumming, this is them at their most basic IMO. Everything else around this song on the album is what I listen to. I think this was their attempt at a single.
What I appreciate about this band is the fact that the singer writes and plays everything but the drums, the fact they don't do many interviews, and, I guess as a musician I really appreciate that they do so many different genres so well.
The song that first got me was The Offering, then Jaws had me hooked. The mix of electronic and heavy from the Offering plus the drumming and emotion put forth in the vocal performance. Then they brought a piano in Jaws and somehow managed to mix it into heavy riffs and amazing drumming.
They have pretty much been on repeat for several years now. I also understand how someone could not like them. It sometimes takes a while for a song to really "get going", but IMO the build is part of why I like it.
Anyhoo, nice honest reaction dude. Appreciate you checking them out again.

To be fair, this is, IMO, one of the only radio-friendly songs they have, which is why your friend probably recommended it, given that you didn't like The Summoning. I think many fans will tell you that ST's appeal is a combination of the genre-bending, the poetic lyrics and the lore behind them, the emotional vocals, the melodic tunes, and the mad-skillful drumming. ST are excellent live as well. Very few of ST's songs sound as radio-friendly as Alkaline. I don't have a favourite, but a few random songs that I love are Nazareth, The Offering, Aqua Regia, and Descending.

Most technical musicians do not get the lyrics other people do though.

i get what you mean about this song. i still love it but it does feel pretty basic. i'm someone who always hated metal, it just felt like too much noise for me and i couldn't appreciate it. even super heavy guitars, i just couldn't do it. then one day i heard the summoning in the gym. disliked it but was oddly enthralled so i kept it on repeat. then i listened to chokehold, and i liked that one. then take me back to eden... an 8 minute song that genre bends from a ballad to metal to hip-hop to rock to something that sounds like a musical to death metal??? then vore... HATED that one because it's one of their heaviest ones! but by that point, i had heard so many different genres and styles from 4 songs off the same album that i knew i had to hear more. from there, i listened to all their albums in order, but not at once. i really gave myself time with each project to go through it multiple times because the music was just hitting so fucking hard. vessel's lyrics and his unique way of singing just hit (honestly everything about his artistry was amazing to me once i kept listening and learned how he writes, sings, and plays all instruments on the recorded albums except for the drums). the band's lore supplemented my interest, you don't have to buy into it to enjoy/understand the music but the theatrics of it all did interest me. there are so many layers to their songs that i never get bored, and 8 months later i've had to force myself to start listening to other music lol. they opened my eyes to metal and i've started checking out other bands i'd previously written off. also, vore is in my top 3 favorite songs. i love the heavy shit now - i think partly because when they do it, there's so much emotion there and it doesn't feel empty. i saw them live a couple weeks ago and it was unforgettable! but ultimately, i do think it takes time to sit down and give their music a chance if you're interested in doing so - while of course knowing that maybe they're not for you. i have no idea what you typically listen to or enjoy, but i'd recommend the songs i listed. jaws, hypnosis, the offering, higher... also some favorites.

I really appreciate you taking the time to give me your thoughts. I definitely don't want to give up on listening to them yet. While I haven't loved the limited amount of what I've heard, there's definitely something there that make me want to keep listening.
