If I can change it I rather see Gerard Gordeau against Pat Smith, Tuli against Ken Shamrock, Kevin Rosier against Gracie, Art Jimmerson against Zane Frazier

They didn’t have match making in mind like this when it first started it was suppose to be styles make fights at first was the formula, but this Comment is interesting for discussion purposes , it would’ve been tough man fights at first then we would’ve seen who’s style was the best after the fact l, I’m sorry but the ufc model worked great they used your idea later on by UFC 3 or 4 but as the first show that would’ve been interesting

I agree with Bill Wallace story. There was a training event with the Gracies before the fight at the hotel. I saw Wallace, Paul Vunak, and Kathy Long there. Kathy Long was the only who got on the mat and rolled. Bill Wallace sat on the side and I could hear him whispering to someone how he could counter everything that was being taught. I got the impression he was intimidated. I believe deep down he knew this new era of fighting was beyond anything he could have handled.

Wallace would have flat out lost. Wallace at that time was always irritated that he wasn’t always the center of attention. In his columns in BB mag in late eighties/early 90’s, he was never easy to give credit to all of the top point fighters etc of that era. Yes he was an accomplished kickboxer and evidently had experience in wrestling but with no youtube, internet etc. , these guys were seeing things they had never saw before. When fighters had exposure to all the arts, we saw how a limited fighter would do with only jiu jitsu training as we saw with Royce va Matt Hughes and dont tell me about how old Royce was. Truth was, he stayed in his lane while all the other guys cross trained. The most anticipated matches involved Rickson going against Mark Kerr or some of the other top guys. Unfortunately he did a couple of Pride events and the competition was not amazing

I would not be so quick to say Bill Wallace wouldn't have done well (in his prime). You can't take away from the fact that he was a full contact American kickboxer and he was an accomplished wrestler and Judo player. So he knew how to box, kick, and grapple. He was more well rounded than almost anyone else in UFC 1. Now I'm not saying he would have done well, but I wouldn't rule him out either. The only problem with Wallace (other than being out of his prime by UFC 1) was his bum right knee. He was able to compensate for it in kickboxing, but I think it would have been much more difficult in MMA/NHB settings. And the only other problem is that Wallace was a relatively small guy. I think he was around 165 lbs. If Wallace was in his prime and if his knee wasn't an issue and he was training for the event, I think he could have had a respectable performance.

Royce Gracie vs Teila Tuli would have been a classic smallest guy vs biggest guy match.

How he talks about an overweight Kevin Rosier (R.I.P.) was pretty funny. Kevin still made it to the semifinals so hey no problem just like he said.

Royce Gracie vs Teila Tuli and Patrick Smith vs Gerard Gordeau would have been the fights to make, I would have liked to see Rosier or Frazier against Jimmerson too.

I think its ashame Bill Wallace didn't get to fight Pat Smith or Gerard Bordeaux or even Art Jemisen in UFC 1. Wallace wasnt too far out of his prime and would have put up a good fight (a kick boxing match) with those 3 guys in the first U.F.C. If Wallace was in his prime, and had not suffered his knee injury, and he trained in Jui Jitsu, he would have done quite well in the U.F.C. Great story, but give credit where it's due.

@@oldironsides4107 maybe more like mid 40s, but in phenomenal fighting condition, and remember, Ron Van Clief fought Royce Gracie at the age of 50 in UFC 4.
