Huge thanks to Elegoo for making this video possible! Check out the Neptune 3 Max Printer here:
www.elegoo.com...
motiongen.io/ is the free web app I use to play around with mechanism
You can purchase the files for the fully 3D printable Strandbeest here:

I also have a patreon: / engineezy
Also, the electric screwdriver I used to assemble and disassemble this thing many times is a game changer: geni.us/f6oJ
This is the filament I use: geni.us/sdT9QBj
Shout out to Mike from @wesselscreations and Jonathan from @JGazze for helping me with the drone shots!
Based off the original invention by Theo Jansen, the Strandbeest is a mechanical walking creature that harnesses the power of the wind to walk along the beach. This particular version is robotic, using a GPS and Compass to navigate its way through the world.

Ahh so sick! I've wanted to make one of these for ages. Def grabbing your version to print out.
Thanks Angus!! Appreciate the support!
Sigh. Go away.
@@Xentherawhat?
Could you please send me the measurements
Words can't put how much I enjoyed it walking around the beach. Put some googly eyes on it and give it a path and it'll be a hundred times better
Googly eyes!! Miss opportunity 😂
Idea: give it a neck and a scoop so it can pick up sand every now and then, as if it were looking for something. You could even have a mesh that filters it out, so it can collect trash and rocks.
Love it! The evolution
Yes, I was thinking the same thing, it will be an environmentally friendly beach cleaner and if you put a solar panel on it for the battery of the servos it would not be maintained, it would be brutal, causing the institutes of the coastal towns themselves to do it in their classes , a whole circle...
Yes, I was thinking the same thing, it will be an environmentally friendly beach cleaner and if you put a solar panel on it for the battery of the servos it would not be maintained, it would be brutal, causing the institutes of the coastal towns themselves to do it in their classes , a whole circle...
also since the design is out people could make their own and create an army of cleaners
Also put a speaker on it that randomly shouts out weird stuff like.
"this is a perfect spot to lay my eggs."
"You will be assimilated."
Some say Strand-E is still cruising the beaches of Toronto to this day. Awesome work as always! Was a lot of fun to see it trundle along in person!
As the legend goes… thanks so much for your help 👊👊👊
I still remember seeing the original project back in the day. Such originality. Very cool to recreate it.
It’s an incredible invention!
@@Engineezyif you find yourself back out with it, I'd love to see it.
I would love to build a version of the Strandbeest, add a solar panel and have it run all day on the beach at our place.
I've already done something like that at Scrap Mechanik and was always happy when I ran into Robi.
Thats a fun idea, imagine seeing something like this without a human creator near by
Dude I love straandbeests i always remember watching the yearly updates with the adagio from the spartacus suite playing in the background.
They are pretty amazing creations eh!
I've always loved the Strandbeest, so this is badass! I'm not much of a 3D printer guy, but I think about the time it would take to machine/weld something like this and I start to cry 😂
Its such an awesome invention! Glad you can appreciate 🙏 one day I would love to make one out of aluminum!
I absolutely loved the david Attenborough imitation 🤣. You're an inspiration to a lot of us, thank you for creating.
I've just begun my first year as an electrical engineering student in Mumbai, India. Hope to build cool stuff like you someday!!
Thank you for watching! You got this!
I think it would be really cool to try to keep the original intent of these being wind powered alive, I really liked the windmill on the one, It would be really neat to have windmills and then electronics operating a clutch sort of system to the legs to control where it goes, maybe even giving the beest a way to use the wind to walk against it! To further attempt to make it self contained the clutch could be powered by solar. regardless your project is really cool, I remember being obsessed with these in the early 2000s and wanting to build one myself!
I was actually thinking about a window powered clutch system! Could be a cool thing to explore!
I love how you pointed out the "wind" stand-in with the arrow. LOL Very cool! Thanks for sharing this one with us. :)
Thank you!! Glad someone can appreciate my silly jokes
I've seen the strandbeest been done quite a few times but the gps was quite a neat touch. The birds eye perspective of the path with all the little footsteps was really cool
Thanks! Glad you can appreciate the ‘iteration’
That rover made out of just part of the overall build is just awesome!
😀😀
this is so cool! the way it walks on the beach is so hilarious to me it looks like a robot dinosaur
Hahaha a big clumsy dinosaur 🦖
Awesome job Jay - Loved the ending and seeing the beast in action!
Thanks Toby!!
I love your sculptures. They are so cool!!!!
Appreciate it 😀
I saw the guys work years ago and never forgot how spectacular it was- I have been trying to track it down to send it to you but I should have known you would know all about him. I thought of him when I saw your work
It’s absolutely amazing isnt it! And he takes it SO far! Appreciate it!
it's so nice to see him crawling along the dunes! Definitely an awesome project! Have you thought about making it move with a propeller sail ? He will walk forever with it
Definitely need to give it a try!
You absolutely killed it with that David Attenborough impression! Great video :D
Haha! Glad you think so! Appreciate it 😀
BEACH BEAST! (strand best translated btw)
Awesome build! Y'know, with a bigger motor, this thing looks rideable to me...
Thank you! You are not wrong 🤔🤔🤔
I like this a lot! I've also built a motorized Jansen linkage walker but it was much smaller and could only go forwards and backwards.
Awesome! How many times did you assemble it wrong 😂😂 I had to disassemble mine like 4 times
@@Engineezy Countless times. Its pretty traumatic, but worth the effort :)
Strandbeest is just Dutch for beach animal. You made a nice iteration👍🏼 of it.
Appreciate it!!
That’s just asking for a giant solar panel on top. Endless power!
Might have to bust it out again once hibernation is over!
So cool! Was pumped to see it in person enjoying the beach! Keep up the great work
👊👊👊👊
In case it wasn't obvious: "strandbeest" literally translates to "beach beast". It has nothing to do with strands. Thank for using the term strandbeest JB!
Had to page homage to the inspiration!
This is brilliant! I have always been fascinated by these, so cool to see you build it! Could your large version still be driven by wind if you removed the electronics?
Thank goodness that no bearings were harmed in the making of this video. I’d hate to have to report you.
This is soooo sick! Also love the wind powered version that you made. Next step: rideable strandbeest?
Thank Morley! Maybe 🤔🤔🤔
I've actually seen that before! Someone made an electric wheelchair that replaced the wheels with Strandbeest legs. Each side was independently driven like in JBV's version so that it was steerable.
Fokken fantastic! Was captivated the whole video. Cherry on top for the ending narration 🤓
Thanks E! Was thinking about you while I was speaking to the computer in an old man British accent
Very creative hard work 🤍👌😊
Appreciate it!!
@JBVCreative you are so welcome!!
Can this Strandbeest go into the water?
This hard work made me remember the typewriter project style on a big scale, I don't know why.
Man, I wonder if you could use the Fourier transform to make arbitrary walking profiles with gears. By offseting the gears in the X-axis, you could avoid the self interaction issue. Greate video!
Thank you! Going to have to brush up on my fourier transforms eh
i must say the David Attenborough voice was on point.
😂😂 that took an entire day
That just blew my mind. Seriously dude
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
When Industrial Designer Jay turned into David Attenborough Jay! This is so intricate tho 😂
😂😂😂 I should probably stick to industrial designer Jay…
Theo is proud of you.
🙏🙏🙏
Wow, how different from the days of the beginning! What can I say that I haven’t said a million times before. Thanks for continuing to amaze 🤯 and make me grin from ear to ear 😁 with your brilliance. Was that solar powered? Always a pleasure Jay!
Thank you!! Appreciate you sticking with me. It was not solar, but that could be a future addition!
Will you be releasing the plans and STL's for this Beast?
Truly amazing work man, keep it up!
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Idea : Stick a scoop behind it so it can trace its way in the sand (seen from your drone above). Would be cool to see the way you traced on the map IRL
That would be very cool!
very cool
🙏🙏🙏
Another very good project !
Now imagine it in multi color print !
But i like it white !
I’ll leave it up to you to give it some fun colours! 😀
@@Engineezy
Sorry me i print only in black !
Lol !
My current project I'll be bringing for opensauce 2024 is an AI strandbeest spider. Hope to see this one there if you plan on going again!
That is awesome! Might have to have a little face off!
The Elegoo sponsor is insane, if there’s anything I know about 3D printing, and I don’t know very much, it’s that Elegoo is one of the big names.
The Jansen voice in the end was awesome.
😅😅😅
It’s actually pronounced ‘strond baest’
Your vids always brighten my day.
That is mission accomplished! Cheers 😀
that thing is amazing to watch!
Agreed! So mesmerizing
Should definitely send it on a path to draw a word with its foot prints in the sand. Seriously, its screaming to be done!! Looks awesome.
Here a big 😀 from a Dutch 🇱🇺 guy. Well done 👍
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Jbv creative: Iam something of a artist and engineer myself
😎😎
@5:55 the two halves look like wings which gave me an idea. what if you mounted a chair in the between the two halves and created a straandbeest ATV. Imagine roaming around the beach on your straandbeest.
Yes yes yes yes!
That would be epic! Might have to give it a shot!
Another amazing project!
Thanks Jessipa!
I'm lovin' this!
🙏🙏🙏🙏
This is called talent bruv, keep it up
Thank you!! 🙏🙏
Very cool indeed. Add a power bank with solar and let it run all day. Maybe add some little feet so it doesn sink in the softer looser sand. Looking forward to next creation
Great suggestions!
Crazy well done (as always).
Really appreciate that!
Awesome. I would have loved to see zefrank do documentary bit
insane vid! give it some polar panels and see how long it can walk
It could just wait in a place until it recharges completely. Bigger problem would be sun and the PLA filament.
That would be super fun! Version 2?
I was about to comment the same thing. See just how long it could go on it's own before dying, being stolen, or removed by the "authorities". Might become a local attraction.
Love it!
Thank you!!
Very inspiring ; so much to learn from it!! Your videos fire up the creative part of my brain! Thanks for sharing!!✨👌♥️
🙏🙏🙏
I have always loved those strandbeast
Me too! Was fun to finally dive in to it
Beautiful!!
Why don't you make it move with a path that creates a certain shape, and then take a shot with the drone to reveal the shape drawn on the sand?
I would have to make a few upgrades to the electronics- that will be a V2
Missing a comma. "A GPS enabled, Powered Strandbeest"
clickbait
Definitely been on my list toale one of these for awhile now!
And i just bit the bullet and bought a Bambu Lab P1S as I was so frustrated with the extremely inconsistent results of my Ender 3 Pros.
I don't mind tinkering, but when the same settings and process get different results, I draw the line.
So going back and printing some of your other designs like clock etc that I bought and couldn't get to print on previous printers.
This will definitely be getting printed too!!!!!! Can't wait!
Thanks for the inspiration, models, and entertainment from your videos!
I think thats a great move! You wont regret it
I didn't see it asked in the comments but how fast can you make it go?? Is the limitation on the motor or is the path that the walking legs make?? It seems that it would be able to go faster on a paved surface rather than on beach sand. If you add a variable speed motor and sensors to it would that make it possible for the machine to vary its speed according to the surface. Just fascinated by this.
For this version the limitation is the motors! With some beefier motors and motor drivers it could go much faster, but then of course the strength of the parts becomes a factor!
7:12 The nature documentary like voice over!!!!😂
😆
That motion gen software looks amazing
It’s next level!
Loved the David Attenborough impression! Made me laugh out loud more than once!
I bought a hundred pack of skate bearings on Amazon a while back, so I could theoretically make this, but I'm just about convinced that they'd rust away into nothing as soon as they were exposed to sea air.
The PLA on the other hand, that's not going *anywhere!* Just last night, I checked on a chimney I 3D printed for my birdhouse years ago from a 3kg spool of white PLA, and despite being out in the elements for literal years, it looks the same as the day I printed it. (cough "biodegradable" cough)
Yeah those are the bearings I used for this project as well, I give them a full -1 stars 😂
the narrative makes this video hilarious!
Glad you appreciated that segment, took me SO long to make haha
Beautiful and genious conception
Thank you!!
'The local wildlife' /cuts to service dog chillin/🤣
I too love 3d printing and most oftenly with SolidWorks maybe one day I will make a product to take it to woodbine beach 😎💀
Let me know when you do!
I made a strandeest for school a few years ago, it also had two motor but only on pair of legs on each side so it wasn’t very stable
Thats awesome!
I freaking love strandbeasts!
Me too 🙌
Can anyone else relate to Strand-E when it’s just just one of those days where your too tired to do anything but not tired enough to sleep so you just wander around without aim.
Yup…😅
Dude! Nice build
Thank you!!
What a beautiful end!
Haha thank you!
Wow, amazing work
Thank you!!
Well-done marvelous design.been for a while I am following your channel maybe it's not the right place but want to ask 2 questions :
1.how do you design your gear assembly is that with a special soft like geartrax or inventor or what?
2. I know you have a video for you C clips trick but I can't find it could address it for me
By thanks for you beautiful creative features it really makes me speechless
For gears I use a gear library (which you can download for free from my website). Not sure exactly what trick you mean?
I meant the c clips that you usually use for assembling Stuf. Any video or tutorial for printing them in different sizes
Hello I am Canadian too yay
🙌🙌🙌
I always love how clean the white filament you use comes out
What brand do you use?
NGL your channel has me constantly kicking myself for not at least doing a mech minor
Love your work mate
I’m always kicking myself for not doing a Software minor 😂😂 I use esun pla+
Awesome!
Thank you!!
mount on the end rubber stands, so it can go on sidewalks without scrubbing of the plastic
That would be a great idea!
wow this is so sick!!
You really need to get yourself a vice or press, it makes inserting the bearings much easier and less traumatic to the bearing.
Not a bad idea 😂😂
Great Project 🎉
Thank you 🙏🙏
Coolage! I hope the Seagulls didn't give it too hard of a time while cruising around. :D
The seagulls couldn’t care less about it 😂
Next level project boiii!!!
🙏🙏🙏🙏
I think it's quiet impressive that you do say 'Janssen' in Dutch constantly (because you said strandbeest is too hard). Theo Janssen is a hero of mine. I ones look into of I could get an internship from him, but his website says he doesn't work with interns unfortunately
I just picture it as Yanssen and its easy 😂 that would be pretty cool!
@@Engineezy ah yes of course
This is Really cool! When i read the title I thought it was you giving the name which meaned to me that you are Dutch ^^
Haha I am definitely not Dutch! But I do appreciate this Dutch ingenuity 🙌
Love it, I want to print it!
Thank you!!
Love all your work....keep it up!!
Appreciate it! Will do 😀
Such great videos!!!
Thank you!!!
i feel oddly relaxed by this video
I cant help but see an Ender looking at that elegoo
A very large one!
The accounting department is always a thorn in the side of any project, lol
Seriously eh 😐
SO COOL! Now.... MAKE IT BIGGER!!!!😄
😳😳😳😳
Do the files on your site include the places to put the motors as well as the fan?
Would definitely be interested in voth versions, even if sold separately.
Would be fun to learn the electronics parts to make my own unique rc car.
The files are just for the rotor powered version! Maybe I can add that to the files 🤔
Build another one and join them together 1 infront the other, put a platform on top. So you can stand on it or put a chair on it.
