    This style is simply elegant and smart! I best like clothes designed by Tommy Hilfiger, but such Zara has some interesting pieces of clothes like that, too.

    there is something so inspiring about preppy styles :) I'll take a guy in a nice blazer any day over T-shirts and jeans.

    I saw this guy coming onto a bus in Oxford, wearing leather loafers (no socks), a matching belt, a red and white oxford shirt tucked into his rolled up khaki trousers (this was before this look became "in style"), carrying graduation robes. HE LOOKED SO YUMMY!

    ...It's all about an unstudied, relaxed chic. I am not a prep myself; I did however go to an elite prep school, so the aesthetic is forever imprinted in my psyche.

    The foremost advantage of being preppy in my opinion is that you have to be good looking.Quazy Modo did NOT wear Lacoste,he probably wore Converse

  • @preppychrisbou

    Rugby is another brand by the designer Ralph Lauren. Rugby is even more targeted to young teenagers, like the same group of young people that will be more likely to buy in Hollister, American Eagle, A & F and Aeropostale. While it's perhaps the most commercial of the preppy brands, still very preppy, classic, classy and preps wear it with no problem. I don't think it is too different from the traditional brands, and it's quite sporty.

  • @preppychrisbou
    @preppychrisbou  12 років тому

    @turnerc04 Just wear them. As you noticed, preppies clothes don't have to match exactly but they are always cordinated. If the pieces you are wearing are classic and "preppy" then you shouldn't have trouble. One advice I'll give you specially if you are new to this is to look always natural. Avoid wearing a peacoat or wool jacket if you are in a tropical weather for example. Also Searching for advices in color matching is smart but don't take that too seriously, just so you can know the basics.

    I think you've got the clothes all right, but the pictures of regular people are more spot on than the professional/fashion shoot pictures. Preppy girls don't wear much make-up, if any. Finding one sporting a dark, super-bold, smokey eye is akin to spotting a Yeti. Most importantly, preps don't do elaborate hairstyles. My friends barely put a comb through their hair for prom...

    The only problem that preps have with Abercrombie is that it's not preppy. Abercrombie may have durable clothing but they are urban and modern and not preppy at all. As a trendy clothign store I think they are good.

  • @simon5005
    @simon5005 14 років тому

    I've been dressing this way for over thirty years............J Crew, Land's End, L L Bean, Orvis, Eddie, Bauer, etc., and these clothes never go out of style. By the way, Abercrombie used to be a big preppy-source, but they sold out some years back and is a joke now.

    NB: in the middle, I wrote "Brooks, J. Press, etc." What I meant to say (but somehow got clipped out) is that *real* preps wear clothes from companies like those, rather than Polo / Ralph Lifshitz or Abecrombie & Fitch. Tradition, conservative style, understatement, non-status-seeking and non-faddishness are the hallmarks of true preppyness. From Miss Porter's and Deerfield to Winchester and Charterhouse, real preppy students wear that kind of clothing, not this faux-preppy stuff here.

      RareEnigma™ Goodwill. That's where I bought my name brand items for like $2-$5! In the stores, those items would've been hundreds of dollars! It probably helps that my closest Goodwill is near a rich area.

    • @ddl4374
      @ddl4374 4 роки тому +1

      The right charity thrift stores and consignment stores + a skilled cheap strip mall tailor for a frugal but lovely custom fit!
      And YES! the right goodwill. Quality will DRASTICALLY vary from location to location, but the right store can be a motherlode of fantastic classic pieces you'll o e for years ! The more worn the better ! The appeal of these items is that they ARE from years back, they arent brand spanking new, they aren't 'try-hard' - they have that casual unpretentious confident classic carefree 'fuck you' ( as our channel host puts it ) comfortable authenticity. ~ they look like you've had them for years! That's kind of cool!

    The only reason why a prep sometimes can look very similar to their grand parents it's because preppy clothes never go out of style. The preppy style is eternal and many many young people enjoy it and feel as young as the ones that like to wear the ripoff brands. You are obviously not preppy and you are certaintly missing great things you find in the preppy lifestyle.

    @jhkl123456 -- What is prep? Three things: tradition, understatement and (obviously) private education. Without all three of these, nothing can be prep. Prep is all about tradition -- specifically, New England, Ivy League, WASP (white, Anglo-Saxon Protestant) families, (usually) old money, old homes, old schools. What NON-preps today call "preppy" is nothing more than a fashion fad, created by and marketed to people who are NOT from preppy backgrounds. They're just poseurs.

  • @bricology
    @bricology 13 років тому

    @jhkl123456 ...Preppies don't want to be noticed and certainly don't like new fashions. Most wear what their fathers and mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers wore, and often they wear the very clothes they wore. Conspicuous consumption and designer logos are anathema to preppies. Brooks, J. Press, etc. Real preps would rather wear their father's or grandfather's beat-up old watch than a new Audemars Piguet, and their dad's old Izod shirt (with the croc cut off) than anything from Polo.

    Doesn't the preppy trend go hand-in-hand with the lifestyle? I like this look, but let's face it, I can't be prep with my budget and my education. Now how many of us can really say we're preppy. Maybe at heart, but for some of us, never truly unless you really want it and go for it.

    There's nothing prep about ANY of this.
    And BTW, Ralph Lauren's real name is Ralph Lifshitz. He grew up in the Bronx, the son of a house painter, and attended an orthodox Jewish day school and public high school. There's nothing prep about him, despite him trying so hard to refashion himself into an uber-WASP. It's really kind of pathetic, like a white kid trying hard to be taken seriously as a gangsta rapper. I'd have more respect for him if he kept his name and designed leisure suits.

      As a photographer I have always admired RL ads. The clothing and the various models on locations many of us would fit into inspires me to be mindful of what my style could be.
