I noticed that in the Mayweather fight the announcers ignored almost everything Emmanuel did and just kept praising Floyd, i mean floyd was winning the fight even before the stoppage but still
They didn't ignore what Burton did. But Mayweather was hitting him 10 times to every one time Burton hit him. So what did you expect? This wasn't an even fight by any stretch of the imagination.
If this man had the punching power to match his insane ability, he would easily have had worldwide recognition. Incredibly talented, entertaining and courageous…
Emmanuel Agustas is my all time favorite boxer. He is undoubtedly one of the best I have ever seen,I can't believe they kept this man down like they did, he deserved so much more and should be praised more than he has been. As long as he had fun with it and didn't go broke he done well. I only have two thumbs to give two thumbs up but he deserves three.
I'm a fan of floyd and am watching all of his professional bouts from start to finish, and I'm currently on fight 25/50. 24 was his bout with Emanuel... It was stopped in the 9th due to the doctor's concern, but also Emanuel took shots so he could give them back and in the results, in part, FMJ's hand started hurting and I still wonder if 3 more rounds would have made a difference.... No one else has bloodied Floyd like emanuel did in that fight. I still haven't looked into the last time he fought before that bout either yet, but after watching all the fights in a row and also seeing the Diego Coralles fight with FMJ right after and he, being 33-0, didn't even bloody FMJ... it really put Augustus skills in perspective... I plan to watch all of EA's fights (wow EA like EA sports) in a row also to really hone in on his lineage as well, but FMJ is one of the greatest fighters of all time (based on just watching his fights and studying the others he dismantled, this is not hyperbole if you really study) and to know EA had FMJ potentially closer to defeat than anyone else says a lot. He *was* taking a lot of shots, but you can only hit a brick wall for so long before things start to get a little weird and I just could sense a potential intersection if the fight was allowed to continue... EA did look a little frayed, but there's still a chance he could've kept it going and maybe not win but be undoubtedly be the closest person to ever beat FMJ, which says a lot, especially considering the rest of FMJs career.
I don’t know how I’m 3 days late seeing the notification for this... Emanuel is one of my all time favorites. Great video as always, Rich. I’ve always told people to watch him v Ward to see that he wasn’t just the “drunken master.” The dude could box, brawl, slip and move. I personally think he’s one of the boxing geniuses and is slept on by many because of how his career was molded. Took so many fights on a week or less notice. I think he loves boxing and understands it so much that he messes around with rhythm and timing and his dancing and goofing around. I use the chess analogy for boxing usually, but how he would slip while dancing or catch someone with a hard counter hook while in the groove is nothing short of poetry
This guy must have been in incredible shape with the amount of movement he does in the ring plus the volume of punches he throws. Perhaps if he was managed differently, he'd have won a title
His timing and agility were nothing short of phenomenal. Augustus even had an iron chin. The one element he lacked was striking power... from what I remember he had relatively few KO wins (most were TKO or decision). If he had heavier hands, the matches with Floyd and Mickey might have ended quite differently!
One of my favorite all-time fighters. If he had a decent management team that would not keep putting him in shitty situations...he most definitely could have been a champion. Most entertaining fighter of that era...bar none.

When I attended LSU, I lived in Baton Rouge during my college years during 04’ & had joined the same gym Augustus was from, 14th St. Boxing Gym. Although he was long gone by that time. I’ve often heard countless stories about Augustus. They said he would come into the gym. Turn on music & start beating the dog shit out of everyone to the tune of the beat, including heavyweights. I’m not sure how true this part is, but they also said he used to put a licking on the Heavyweight Clifford Etienne.
One of the greatest gatekeepers of all time bout time he got his proper due. Mayweather still says to this day Drunken Master was his toughest fight, and you can clearly see why Floyd had to change his style later. One more time tho Rich would love to see a doc on Eddie Hopson!
One of my all time favorite fighters... a warrior an entertainer a a true master of the drunken style.... wish him nothing but good things and hope God keeps blessing him with many more years
One of the most entertaining fighters ever. He was much better than his record showed. For years, Mayweather said Emanuel Burton was his toughest fight.
I had fighters like Barrera, Morales, Marquez, De La Hoya, Pacquiao, Roy Jones, Tyson, and Vargas as favorites before i watched Emmanuel's first video. I fell in love IMMEDIATELY.
I saw Emmanuel Burton fight many times here in New England including the FOTY in 2001 against Mickey Ward at the Hampton Beach Ballroom in NH. Loved watching Burton/Augustus fight.

Thanks a million for making this documentary, I mentioned along with other fans about the drunken master and true to your word you delivered..A truly great fighter, brilliant and so entertaining, a throwback. I remember the Thaxton fight in the UK and promoter and especially the commentators didn’t do their homework because they never gave Emmanuel a chance, he took Thaxton apart (And Thaxton was a decent boxer, did go 10 rounds with Hatton), I think Emmanuel had 3 fights in one month at that time. Tremendous respect, I was distraught when I found out the accidental shooting, but amazingly he survived and although financially not secure he is teaching what he knows best. There really needs to be a secure pension scheme for ex boxers but alas it’s not yet been achieved. Thanks again Rich. 🥊👏

"Jamie pull up that one beat where I beat a bear from it"
One of the greatest gatekeepers of all time bout time he got his proper due. Mayweather still says to this day Drunken Master was his toughest fight, and you can clearly see why Floyd had to change his style later. One more time tho Rich would love to see a doc on Eddie Hopson!
It'll be a while on Hopson but that's a good recommendation.
Big mf factz I just watch on UA-cam Flody talking bout drunk master
One of my all time favorite fighters... a warrior an entertainer a a true master of the drunken style.... wish him nothing but good things and hope God keeps blessing him with many more years
One of the most entertaining fighters ever. He was much better than his record showed. For years, Mayweather said Emanuel Burton was his toughest fight.
God Bless You Brother! I wish You health Peace &. Prosperity to a True Boxing original.
One of Mt heroes. Been studying his fights for years.
One of your very best Rich- thoroughly enjoyed it, thank you.
Keep going and going Sir !!
Thanks so much, Martin.
Viva El Drunken Master...always entertaining to watch
Yes! This is the doc I was waiting for! Thanks so much!
My pleasure, Scott
Talk about underrated, best video presentation on many of yours to date. Really outstandingly done and a very good man , still aptly connecting the words “entertainer” and fighter together.
Thanks so much, Benny
No sad ending. Fought back gave back and lives a life of worth.
What a superb talent!
Thanks for the video, RICH THE FIGHT HISTORIAN
Sure thing, abudujana
He was so awesome. Every time it was him or Micky Ward, or both, it was time to grab the popcorn.
Always loved watching Augustus fight, great job Rich!
Thank you, B Bake
Been waiting for this, great homage to Emmanuel Augustus. Great video rich
Thanks so much.
Lovely tribute again to an underrated fighter Rich. Good work mate 👍
Thank you, Kieran
What was his rating?
@@jumpinjojo man you asked this is every single comment, what the hell is this "rating" you looking for? There is not 2nd place, 7th ranking, white belt, heavenly dragon belt.
people say underrated because nobody ever talks about him or praises him
my IDOL.. we had similar careers.. lost a lot and then lost a lot when we should have won 🏆 My respects brother You're a true warrior
what a tough human being . I remember watching him in many fights and no matter what you knew you would get a good show by him win or lose .I though thought he had been killed and saddened me and was happy to hear he was still alive .Its not the ideal situation but it seems even a bullet to the head couldn't stop him but sometimes these type of things actually save a person .
I had never heard of this boxer before and I was very impressed. Thank you very much Rich for the introduction.
My pleasure, Lester
Thanks for the amazing video Rich
My pleasure, John
Great Video. If it wasn't for these - I would never have heard of Emanuel, and many of the other boxers/fighters. Pardon my ignorance a lot of effluent passed under the bridge in life. I have a degree in it - lol.
Dude, came from a time where kung-fu movie was popular, reminds me of Jackie Chan's Drunken Master fighting
He's a little fella he doesn't have like stone cold power but he was hard to hit and he was very very good he knew fluid dynamics bro. Very talented. It's a shame that someone shot him out here in Baton Rouge
I loved him. He will always be one of my favorites. Good 'ol Emanuel.
Brilliant rich! Thank you.
Sure thing, Patrick.
Always a pleasure, Brett, thanks for the support.
believe it or not, Frank Warren had Ricky Hatton potentially face Burton, as he was called at the time. I've even got a fight poster naming Burton as opponent against the Hitman.
Only watched him fight once against Mayweather. Always wondered what happened to him
Thanks for posting....
Hey thanks, Gerald.
An underrated fighter and a true champion in life...All hail "The Drunken Master"
Love this guy! So fun to watch! I'll never forget watching live that straight blatant robbery in the Courtney Burton fight on ESPN. Teddy Atlas blew a gasket! Rightfully so!
You make some great docs! I've been binge watching the last few days! I'm an old school boxing fan from the early to mid 80s. Not into it so much any more because of the politics and bullsh1t it's mostly turned into, but I'll still catch a fight or two once in a while. Thanks for the great memorable content!
My pleasure, Brock, thanks for checking the vids out.
What a fighter. If only he had a good promoter, he would of been champion.
Legend has it that Augustus actually drank a fith of gin just prior to each fight alleging that alcohol actually increased his awareness in the ring while simultaneously elevating his tolerance to taking punishment!! All hail to the drunken master one of my all time favorite fighters!!
Thanks have been waiting for this one! A true boxing unsung tactician .
Sure thing, Vinny
I always thought he was from Chicago/texas. Learned something new today
I always liked the Drunken Master style from him!!!👍😁🥊
One of my all time faves in boxing as written by my favorite boxing historian. LFG and thank you Rich!!
Hey thanks, Gerald.
So much fun to watch on ESPN 2 back in the day! Gave Mayweather a tough fight! He was never afraid to fight anybody on short notice!
This is awesome
One the Best unorthodox club fighter
I thought he was killed.
I am glad to hear he is alive.
What a good end to the story
