Hyundai and Kia sales haven’t been impacted at all it seems. They have both been on a multi-month run of “record breaking sales” despite the Kia Boyz thefts. Both reported May 2023 sales of $70k for Hyundai and $71k for Kia. The settlement should’ve included more accountability for drivers affected by the thefts, waived fees for anti-theft security systems, reimbursement to those who had to pay for rentals and repairs, and free basic anti theft security upgrades. I have a 2019 Kia Optima and I had a CompuStar system installed last year that has a kill switch with audible impact and tilt detection alert. This system starts at $500 and is very sensitive. It’s called an immobilizer, it contacts the ECU and tells the car whether or not the correct key is in the ignition. If so, it starts, if not, it won’t start.
My situation is that I had this update installed on my Kia Forte about a month ago, and someone tried to steal my car about a week ago. It’s still in the shop from the damage. They smashed my rear window, stripped the ignition and did a lot of damage to my car, but it was in the same spot where I left it so apparently they weren’t able to start my car. I don’t know if that’s because of the update or because I have a manual transmission and the thieves didn’t know how to drive a stick shift, but somehow they weren’t able to start my car (I’d imagine that someone who knows how to steal a car knows how to drive a stick shift, but these are mostly teenagers who are stealing people’s cars, so you never know).

He didn’t say how he locked the car though. Because with the update you HAVE to use either the key fob or lock it with the key hole on the door handle. Locking it with the door lock button on the inside of the car and closing the door doesn’t arm it. I wonder if that is how he locked it.
