Firefly is still one of my favorite shows. It’s tied with Star Trek: The Next Generation for all-time favorite.
I watched it in 2005 after I returned home from my second tour in Iraq, and unfortunately the show had already been canceled by the time I saw it, but it was still an amazing first viewing for an amazing show.

I’m pretty sure when I finally saw my first episode, it was during a marathon where they played the entire series back-to-back. Firefly was butchered by the studio (the pilot episode did not make much sense until you've seen the whole show), so I was not surprised when it was canceled. I was also pissed off and sad because it had a sort of swashbuckling vibe of the original Battlestar Galactica, which completely blew my mind when I was 7 to be able to see on TV a space opera that resembled Star Wars. That was the time before VCR to put things in perspective for the kids who grew up with streaming.

Nah, that's too tidy. Simon and Kaylee need to have not worked out but still have feelings. Zoe and Wash can't have kids because it would distract from the show too much and add an unnecessary new character that muddles things. It should be Simon having left the ship and becoming a bit less fancy from having to work a hard job in seclusion for years to hide his sister. Inara is off the ship living somewhere in a major planet, but still keeps in touch. River is still River. Jayne left the ship to go work a surprisingly lucrative position, maybe even become the mayor of an outback town. So it's just Zoe, Wash, the Captain and Kaylee running the ship. Joss is accused of essentially being mean and that is not a crime certainly not for a director, who's trying to prove himself, deliver a product and working with a very young cast. While trying to deliver a standard. Plus all this seemed very convenient timing, for actresses that no one's seen on screen for a while. Good timing if you wanna get noticed and maybe a job. That's just in Joss's defence. Not too mention as fan of Buffy and all his stuff for years, seeing the behind the scenes all the gushing they do about Joss and now all of a sudden he's horrible doesn't make sense. He also always tried to get his actors and actresses work. Then it didn't work out they now are turning on him. Thankfully Anthony Head, James Masters, Alan Tudik and Nathan Fillion are just saying that's not our experience but more importantly Anthony Head basically said it was bullshit. He actually said on UK tv over here "Where was I when all this was happening I never seen any of that. We all had fun, it was great. This is very sad. I mean Joss was always very kind but he was the director and boss he was under pressure and of course he had to shout, and you know tell us off sometimes. When we weren't listening or playing around. I think Joss’ biggest mistake was trying to takeover for Zack on JLA.. it wasn’t his hand picked cast and his first script, and I think the actors gave him a hard time from the beginning. I think Joss is a genius too.. and maybe he doesn’t know how to manage those who are difficult to work with, so I’m sure there are moments that didn’t come off right. But for the most part, he did his best and made some beautiful content. Plus he was honest about the JLA cast apart from Affleck none of them can act. Scarlet even said if it wasn't for Joss Black Widow just would've been a background character in Avengers Assemble. Also when you look at things old directors got away with, the way Stanley Kubrick verbally and emotionally abused Shelly she would appear scared and terrified on camera, the way William Freidkin shot guns off on the set of the exorcist to keep th cast frightened. The series run was directly limited to those who either knew the show was airing so they watched it at the time of broadcast, recorded it via VHS cassette to view later, or they missed the episode(s) altogether; ergo, falling through the cracks. Streaming only serves to bolster penetration of an untapped audience thus potentially growing the fan base even further since the series' broadcast run. There are many that worked with Whedon that had zero problems. Anthony Head was also shocked that anything was happening. Plus he probably has some issues but the accusations have been nowhere near deserving the online reaction he’s getting.

It's interesting "he probably has some issues" doesn't mean he's thin skinned. But aside from that, your analyst is missing the point. Joss Whedon seems to be fine with actors he wants to work with but apparently bullies those he sees as replaceable or just with less clout than he has. Y'know the way bullies always work. Anthony Head, Nathan Fillion, he liked them and wanted their characters. Same with too many actors to name. But Whedon didn't like Spike and disliked that he was being forced by the studio to keep the character around and so, according to James Marsters, physically assaulted Marsters and threatened him. Which James is willing to put up with but isn't how a normal workplace runs. But I digress, the point is when he doesn't want a character or an actor to stick around then he's not going to treat them the way he's treating his favorites.
You say two sides, there's one side. He treats different people differently depending on the situation. That's not some cunning gotcha, it just means Whedon is able to control himself as needed but chooses not to when he thinks he can get away with it.

As the rationalization kicks in to cover their own shame for overreacting, the delusions set in. They're the victim, they couldn't be wrong, could they? Now the rage kicks in and they retell the story to all their friends to punish whoever made them feel so inadequate. Now a mob takes the reigns of their little temper tantrum and burns the plains of the internet like a brush fire out of control. @@cupguin He’s definitely an asshole and needs to stop that behavior but most of it comes from confrontations or problems on the set with actors not doing what their boss wants them to do. And some seem like perceived slights. For instance I don’t believe Carpenter was fired for being pregnant. That’s her perception of why she was fired. James Marsters said the show was being cancelled. The WB told Joss they would renew the show if he added James Marsters to the cast. Marsters knew this so he demanded big money. This left none for Carpenter so they let her go. Marsters said he felt guilty about it! I think it’s just easier for her to believe it was personal rather than professional decision of being replaced.

@@mrfloosak you saw where I said "Which James is willing to put up with" right? I also heard what he said and that would qualify as an assault and no one would argue it's acceptability in a normal job.
My point also remains the same.the difference between how he treats actors he wants to keep vs those he does not like or does not think are in a position to stand up to him. Joss Whedon isn't an idiot, he's not deranged, from reports he's a bully who picks his targets carefully. All that Nathan Fillion says here just reaffirms that Joss Whedon can treat people better but chooses not to. That's not a good thing.

One of the best 3 Sci-Fis EVER! (yes i spell it the REAL way, none of that Scy-Fy bullshit) No idea why they cancelled it. I want season 2 its been 20 years they need to come with it and bring Wash back. They brought Dan back on Roseanne, (awaiting her return any day) they can bring Wash back too 😭😭

It was most likely cancelled because Firefly is thinly disguised Neo-confederate/KKK fan-fiction.

It's probably too hard/ unadvisable to start the show up again like back in the day but i tell y'all what i'd love to see is a new crew / cast dealing with the fallout of the Miranda revelation, maybe the exposure has kicked up enough fuss for The Brown Coats to rise again and we see the days leading up to a new civil war and a cult of personality springing up around the crew and their exploits. sigh* a man can dream.

I'm both a Castle fan and a Firefly fan. I'm not really a Rookie fan. I should give that one another looksee but I watched the first few eps and I think it was the scene where we cut to Fillion being in bed with some other rookie and I was like the producers just did that for the surprise. It didn't feel organic. Now granted Firefly and Castle each manipulate the audience too but I felt like I was in the hands of seasoned writers and producers who knew how to do it without making me feel like an idiot. It's a subtle thing, but Rookie just doesn't push my buttons in a favorable enjoyable way like those other two projects did.

It's two years later and I revisited Rookie. I'm now a Rookie fan. So when Nathan Fillion says he can no longer gauge a Firefly fan versus a Castle fan versus a Rookie fan, it's cuz so many of us are now just Nathan Fillion fans. All three of those are entertaining. He put his all into all of that and other stuff too. He's just consistently good. There's a short list of names where you see the name and you're like I bet that's gonna be good. Just cuz s/he's in it.

Although Joss Whedon created the show, a reboot could be very capably run by original series showrunner, Tim Minear.

@Stephen Schneider Sometimes it’s good not to say mean things. Joss was entering a hostile environment, with a director and story the cast had liked on the way out and immense pressure to finish the movie by a certain time, he said mean things, he probably shouldn’t have, but he did. I’ve also heard Buffy era allegations.
