Pro tips from my friend the actually good CV player: Always invest in dive bomber HP over torpedo bomber HP. Dive bombers spend more time in AA without the damage reduction provided by being in an attack run, so they need the help more. Also, the 4 point skill that increases bomber speed works on both the B-25s and the dive bombers, making it much better than usual on Hornet. You can almost get the bomber speed up to acceptable levels with this and the 2 point plane speed skill.
Honestly it’s pretty on-brand for the Hornet’s dive bombers to suck. At her next major action, the Battle of Midway, human error sent them and the fighters tearing of in the complete wrong direction, and they never engaged the enemy on the critical first day. It would become known as the Flight to Nowhere.
@@drakeconsumerofsoulsandche4303 no, that was all Enterprise and Yorktown's divebombers. Hornet's were several hundred miles to the north, because in his infinite wisdom Mitscher wanted to catch the entire Japanese fleet instead of just the carriers that had been spotted.
In my experience its been a pretty well rounded CV for ranked. If ur up tiered to t10 it does not perform well at all. Ap bombers great for cruisers, torps have pretty short fuse range and good for bbs, b25s can make dds have a really bad day and reticle is very forgiving. Pretty decent CV, but there are better options at t8. (chikolov) lol
It's good at ranked, but if the enemy CV is Kaga, then Hornet, doesn't have much of a chance. Has almost low health like saipan and can be literary destroyed under 3 min from Kaga. Belive me I killed him that way in 2 matches
yeah.. agreed. i use hornet mainly for ranked. tho my first pick will always be Kaga, Chkalov and Pobeda. Hornet is good, but im not confident to put it as my fave
I think this ship is the definition of Balance 2 of the CV squadron are basically uptiered tier 6 Ranger plane and the tactical bomber hit hard Tbh i'd prefer to have the AP bomber replaced with He
I have a grand total of 6 carriers in my port and only 2 that I like. Chkalov bc it's a Russian CV and it's those are cracked outta their minds, and the Hornet. I actually built a little bit into the dive bombers, and while they still aren't at the same level as say german bombers, they are still usable. The torpedo bombers are still good like you were saying, and ofc the B-25s are awesome. My strategy is to use the main squadrons to spot low health or ships with a smaller HP pool, drop a fighter if available, then drop the current ordinance I have, F back and then use the B-25s. These planes are especially burtal. I took a Halland from full HP to 4k in one run with the B-25s, and only lost one plane to his notoriously good AA. I think people forget what a "good carrier" is after so many lines and premiums of boarder line or just straight up power creep carriers came out.
Commenting as the video is playing. The Hornet historically had the weakest AA of the three, as Enterprise got upgrades to AA due to surviving, and Yorktown, despite sinking first, had AA at the Battle of Midway the other two didn't have, as extra guns were mounted while it was traveling from the Atlantic to the Pacific. As for your build, you made an oof. The bomber module in slot four buffs both the AP bombers and the B-25s. You are correct about the inconsistence of the AP bombers, but the Mitchells are the real star of this ship. They are great for finishing off wounded targets. I didn't realize how much of a difference the module in slot four matters until I saw you attacking without it. That module helps get more bombs through to the target. If you are really good with the aiming, the Mitchells can make destroyers disappear. If anything, Hornet reminds me of Kaga, but with two good squadrons instead of one.
I am honestly kind of dissapointed with the perma camo for the Doolittle raid. I would have hoped that those B-25s would actually have that classic olive drab camo instead of blue and grey.
Well this review was helpful… I almost bought it yesterday. Mainly because I doubt I’ll ever get the Enterprise. Thank you for the review… I’ll save my money for Christmas time and maybe I’ll get lucky and get Enterprise instead of Hornet.
I have enterprise and while it’s still solid , the Ap bombs are all over the place and it’s a shell of what it once was. I prefer Lexington. Going to get hornet. Also. Avoid Saipan unless you’re an above average cv dude
I had a Hornet in nearly every match on patch day. In one match I had a 2v2 all-Hornet CV match-up. Another game had a Hornet team-mate with SIX TOTAL account games played. (We lost badly). Good times WG.
Imho Hornet (despite some meh reviews) it's pretty strong. Planes are slow, but honestly faster planes will make her straight OP. At the moment I'm very happy with her: avg 80-90k per game, 2-3 kills, also a kraken. The only problem that has the Hornet is MM... If things go wrong you don't have enough speed to chase and kill people all over the map. At the moment I have a very shitty WR because of that: suicide teams. But it's we time.. so maybe it's normal.
Avg 80-90k is not good stats for tier 8 cv. It's below average, it is bad. The strength meter of a ship uses another average ship to compare. If you compare it to implacable, it will look strong. But Implacable cv is considered the lowest of in strength meter. When there is Lexington, Kaga, Chakalov, August von perseval, Shokaku, Pobeda, Saipan, who in their right mind thinks Hornet is pretty strong?
@@siamshikdar actually my avg is about 110k, but anyway DMG meter is not what I (personally) consider a must for a T8 CV. Kills instead are a good meter, because with the last updates WG prizes more the kills than the avg DMG for the CVs. And Hornet is strong in delivering kills also if uptiered, thanks to B-25's bombers.
Wow not sure what I did different but I got AP bomb citadels easily, no issues. I selected light cruisers and especially island camping light cruisers are perfect target. As for the aiming pattern actually prefer it as it is easier like you said for a player who is not CV expert. And bombers are amazing, very easy to hit and finish low HP DDs. I think you are being too harsh on bombs.
The AP bombs have been really good for me. More than a few times I have landed 4 on people. 20k odd cit damage on a t9 is hilarious sometime. They work really really well on cruisers.
Thanks for the review. I was going to get this ship regardless of how good or bad it was. Real ship and all. Doesn’t matter, I wanted it. So I got it the day of drop. Did a few matches, and had a fair amount of fun in it. Ok.. I’m not a good CV player. At best I’m a lucky mediocre player. My first day, I did pretty well, but only had like 4 matches. The next day was INSANE. I played 7 or 8 matches before having to go to work and all but one was a 2xCV match. I saw several other Hornets, but mostly Lex, Shokaku, and few of the Russian, Big E, and a GZ. I could get (for me) high numbers. I even had a 127k match. But most between 60-80k. That’s awesome (again, for me). But.. BUT.. we could not win. Part of it was I guess I faced better CV players or as a team we got out played. Doesn’t matter if I’m the best player of our DDs get wiped in 5 minutes, or everyone just huddled in the same cap. Biggest thing.. she does NOT up-tier well. Her planes are based off of the 1939-1942 era planes. They had a lot of short comings. Like being slow. I tried to attack a Minnesota with my B-25s. Evidently, he had AA specced and maybe had an AA mod.. he evaporated the planes. Nothing reached attack range. Alaskas obliterated my DBs and Torp bombers. T8 and lower.. they did great and I love the ship. Just hope that your better than their CV driver and your DDs don’t die in 5.
The Enterprise was made before the Hornet, not after. There was the Yorktown (CV-5), Enterprise (CV-6), Wasp (CV-7) a smaller CV then Hornet (CV-8). The Doolittle Raid was it's first combat mission.
I don't play CVs but I did get the Hornet just because of its illustrious history., and the fact that you can fly the B-25's! I guess in order to do well in CVs, you may have to try out the Russian ones, as I am told you can't go wrong there.
MM doesn't really try to bring premium ships on opposite sides. When I play premium ships, I usually see premiums go to the same team even if they aren't in a division. I have seen countless times where Shokaku and Weser get pushed to 1 team against E. Lowenhart and Kaga in the other team.
The squadrons reminds me of the British T8 CV Indomitable with only getting to attacks. The dive bombers are basically the rockets on Kaga the sacrificial scouts.
Cant wait to se Yorktown return tbh. (yes, Yorktown was a Tier VII carrier, you know a day when Carrier is not annoying) But I wan shinano at somepoint
Can we see a second look at Prince Eugene, used to be kinda crap but I was playing it last night and it was actually pretty good. I just want to know I'm not imagining things.
I find the Prinz Eugen an excellent all rounder. Bow or stern in, it has a very narrow profile which BBs find it hard to hit at range. Unlike its tech tree counterpart it has heals. Play it like a tier 8 hindy without a spotter. Late game, your armour, torps and hydro can carry teams.
The Hornet I think is an okay carrier. I was in an Ohio on Shards. I was entering a small strait leading into the island bound center. I had just recovered from a Halland torp strike so DC and repair were on cool down. There were 2 BBs and the Halland. I sank a low health BB. I then got hit by a B-25 strike. Two fires and 1/4 ship left I burned out before I could load the next salvo. The Hornet performs well for skilled CV players. You also said you do no not use brisk. I have Cunningham specd' for brisk and vigilance. With a speed flag that is a 15% speed boost. If you don't build for secondaries then I look at building brisk and vigilance into a survival build.
Saipan struggles a lot. Sure it’s a tier 8 CV with tier 10 planes but it’s mostly a detriment. Because it has a smaller amount of planes total and the planes take forever to get replenished to run out of planes very fast especially if you get uptiered at all. I don’t recommend it to anyone unless you really like CVs. If you want to have a casual fun CV you can do good in grab the Japanese kaga or the Russian chakolov. I would still take the hornet over enterprise any day I hate my enterprise after all the nerfs
I would say Kersarge is the best USS cv captain trainer.... Lets be honest now all that matter is how much the premium ship is printing EXP - doesnt matter what class of premium ship.
From what i have seen from playing this ship myself i would put it rly high if not (for me) one of the Best T8 CV out there high damage output with Torpedo and the B-25 Bombers the Dive bombers are Meh, but still useable and not as horrendous as the German AP dive bombers. The Torpedo Bombers Are Filthy good 325m activation Range you can basicly drop them onto the Decks of Ships and its rly rly Easy to pick of Destroyers with Cross Striking, also they can do almost full turns while preping for a Attack 10/10 would recommend if you like playing CVs
I think I saw it mentioned in another review, but Hornets dive bomber technique is a nod to the mistakes her flight crews made leveling out too early and glide bombing over enemies. I like the ship personally, but get ready to be reported a lot because you don’t have effective DD counterplay, and your teams will hate you for it. That being said, if you manage to catch a DD with the B-25s, we’ll… They can make effective DD removers. Here’s a question though, has anyone ever equipped hidden menace to their CV captain? It might help with Hornet having such slow aircraft to be able to sneak her a little closer to the action.
I actually have. Personally I like it since as long as you position properly you can get into the action faster to support your team and help obliterate the flank you choose if done properly. Downside is because you're in action for so long if you're not careful with plane management you can get deplaned by the half match mark depending how close you get to the enemy. Snuck behind an island and ended up proxi spotting a Baltimore on the other end (dumbass me) so half my planes shot down coming back. But you can do some pretty fun things
lol Those B-25's are as you'd say NUTTY Sea Lord, don't remember who's video I watched on it the other day but WOW till they nerf the aiming on the B-25's yes they are slow but damn they pack a punch! p.s. GET WELL SOON Sea Lord!
That's because of the patch day magic, remember when Schlieffen was released? We had 3-4 schlieffen's per match. This thing will lose its popularity really quick
Honestly if you save your B25s for striking 1/4 or 1/3 health targets you get the most out of the Hornet. She is meant to be a strike CV meant to maximize the change in CV gameplay where you kill more than damage. using your torps planes as a delay for your B25s and lowering already damaged ships you can maximize your usefulness to your team. Focusing on damage in the Hornet is stupidity especially at higher tiers.
The planes of the Hornet are essentially glass cannons. Their speed make you more vulnerable and will eat through your HP in no time but they hit like a truck.
also it would be cool if the b-25 could engage fighters or if you flew next to a enemy squadrons the tail gunners on top would engage since historically only the top and I think front guns were kept on as all the other guns were taken off to save some weight. But they are already good at damage so this would be a kinda useless feature.
looking at this review i think you are selling this cv short. a more capable cv player is gonna use this ship to much better capacity then you are doing. i think for the average joe your review is spot on.
Depends on the ship and when you try to get them. Enterprise isn't available for sale, only through Christmas containers and Super containers (I believe). Hood is still on sale though. Most historical ships are a mix like that, mainly because they were broken and removed from the store i.e original Missouri and Massachusetts
There are quite a few real steel ships available in the armory, Hood is there, HMS Agincourt is available from the Battle of Jutland containers, you can also get Oklahoma via the Always Courageous containers. Both of those are available for coal or dubs. A few of the other Pearl Harbor battleships are available as well. Arizona, West Virginia, California are all there. The lower tiers of the tech tree also have a bunch of famous real steel ships, the higher tiers tend to be paper ships for the most part.
Most of the historic ships are still for sale. You can get Alabama, Hood, Duke of York, Scharnhorst, Tirpitz, Roma and a number of other historic ships in the premium shop for money or in the armory for doubloons, steel or coal. Just be sure to watch/read reviews on them before you buy… just because it’s a historic ship in real life doesn’t mean it’s a good ship in the game with the current meta.
There’s a few historical ships that can’t be purchased: Missouri Musashi Massachusetts Enterprise And some others (someone let me know which ones I’m missing) But besides the few that aren’t on sale anymore, most are available either in the premium shop or in the tech trees
...TBD Devastators???? Those planes alone make me rethink this purchase. The large waves are pretty heavily needed since these were some of the worst planes in WWII, and you're likely going to lose a ton of them by the time you even get to good drop distance.
My first impressions weren't that good mostly because of my team not having more than 2 braincells but both my first and second games were 100k+ so i'm happy
I don't know, with your Mustang reference the Hornet for me is a Mustang but with a Bugatti Veyron W16 engine. I absolutely obliterate everything with it, comically op.
@@sealordmountbatten can't say I've ever experienced being hit by an F-250 nor do I know anyone who has. If you would please, tell me what it feels like?
For the Atlantico, unless you're in a hurry, after the first few packs you're not spending for the ship, you're spending for the steel you get after getting the ship.
@@weabootrash5891 Hornet’s dive bombers never saw the enemy at Midway. They and the fighters went on the infamous “flight to nowhere”. The dive bombers you are probably thinking about are the ones that flew from Midway itself and they conducted level bombing attacks on the Japanese carriers with awful results to themselves.
It was removed from sell because at that moment it was considered OP *which it was not, WG was just trying to cash on players for historical nostalgia*. It is below average CV after all the CV nerfs. You can only get it right now with Christmas Container or Super Container.
I guess you failed to bring up the double CV game on 2 brothers where you did very well during your live stream. GG btw I was in the Haarlem that I shot down 37 of your's and the other CV in that game. Being on the receiving end of being focused. l0l I also saw a Hornet in everygame I was in Thru. and Friday
So as usual WG got it wrong. From everything I have read the Devastator was a POS, and the Dauntless was such a great dive bomber that she outlived her replacement the helldiver.
The Hornet is not as good as Big E, Kaga, or Okachov. But still averaging 80k and 100% win rate. I dropped 27k and 2 fires on a Thunderer last night 🤷♂️
the hornet's b25 is designed to hunt dd... that's probably why you had a bad time with it... seen some other people in youtube using hornet's b25 and they were tearing dd apart with ease like it was paper soaked in water...
There's a reason the Hornet is not like the Enterprise is in-game. The current Enterprise version in-game is after her major overhaul & upgrade in late 1942 to early 1943. The Hornet in-game is how she was when sunk in fall of 1942 during the Guadalcanal campaign. You only need to compare the AA defense, planes, and hulls to see the difference. Big E received a major torpedo defense with a large torpedo blister. I used the AP bombers strictly against the battleships, battle cruisers, and heavy cruisers where AP bombs solidly effective.
You keep comparing this CV with the Enterprise and say that compared to the Enterprise, this ship is not recommended. I'm not a CV player and I bought the Enterprise before it was removed. I really do not see why people think it is special, especially when you compared it with the OP CVs that were released since then, between the Russian CVs, and the German CVs and other premium CVs.
It’s because people only remember pre nerf enterprise. All the world wide re works to AP dive bombers and rocket planes nerfed current enterprise to the ground, its torpedo bombers are the only thing that can get consistent damage . I personally hate my enterprise I’d say it’s the worst tier 8 CV in the game except for that one British CV that only has 2 attacking flights
poor AP? come on pro player doesnt know hitting lower armor thickness.... in part training u could exploit where best hitting for citadel.... dropping into conning tower + armored that more likely dumb play....

Base conceal is good. Why would you handicap yourself when you can not recycle planes faster to send attack flight?
I love the hornet such a fun ship, the B-25s slap, it feels like an American carrier with British play style
I'm definitely planning on getting this ship within the next few months
lol Those B-25's are as you'd say NUTTY Sea Lord, don't remember who's video I watched on it the other day but WOW till they nerf the aiming on the B-25's yes they are slow but damn they pack a punch! p.s. GET WELL SOON Sea Lord!
Friday morning it appeared to be selling well, every tier 8 battle i was in had at least one Hornet in it
That's because of the patch day magic, remember when Schlieffen was released? We had 3-4 schlieffen's per match. This thing will lose its popularity really quick
Honestly if you save your B25s for striking 1/4 or 1/3 health targets you get the most out of the Hornet. She is meant to be a strike CV meant to maximize the change in CV gameplay where you kill more than damage. using your torps planes as a delay for your B25s and lowering already damaged ships you can maximize your usefulness to your team. Focusing on damage in the Hornet is stupidity especially at higher tiers.
AP bombs have a 30mm threshold, which is making it overpen several cruisers within its tier spread.
It overpens napoli bruh. Just go for bbs.
if you dont build into ap bombers they are of course terrible , probably better to use them on cruisers
So historically just for accuracy sake Hornet is actually slightly more advanced and a slightly different design then Yorktown and Enterprise
The ap bombers are actually decent agasint majority of cruisers. I’m getting consistent citadels on cruisers across all lines
As a new player I love this game, but can a guy like me still get nostalgic ships like the hood, enterprise etc?
There’s a few historical ships that can’t be purchased:
Missouri
Musashi
Massachusetts
Enterprise
And some others (someone let me know which ones I’m missing)
But besides the few that aren’t on sale anymore, most are available either in the premium shop or in the tech trees
...TBD Devastators???? Those planes alone make me rethink this purchase. The large waves are pretty heavily needed since these were some of the worst planes in WWII, and you're likely going to lose a ton of them by the time you even get to good drop distance.
In the CV lands of SEA, Hornet is plenty popular, I have enjoyed having my stern torn apart by another new plane bote.
Lmao yea people seems to buy it day one in SEA
My first impressions weren't that good mostly because of my team not having more than 2 braincells but both my first and second games were 100k+ so i'm happy
I got the T-10 German CV in a container and it has never left port. :)
No comments? It's 5 minutes people!
I don't know, with your Mustang reference the Hornet for me is a Mustang but with a Bugatti Veyron W16 engine. I absolutely obliterate everything with it, comically op.
Please explain your 'hitting like an F250' comment. How does a pickup truck relate to medium bombers?
When you land a good amount of the HE bombs on target, it’s like hitting someone with an F250
Hits like a mother trucker idk about you but I don't wanna get hit by an f250😭😭
Me lord, a squadron of bf250s inbound
@@sealordmountbatten can't say I've ever experienced being hit by an F-250 nor do I know anyone who has. If you would please, tell me what it feels like?
@@billwalker9509 It tends to hurt
So if I were to spend money, should I spend it on the Atlantico or the Hornet?
For the Atlantico, unless you're in a hurry, after the first few packs you're not spending for the ship, you're spending for the steel you get after getting the ship.
Hornet. You would not gonna get Atlantico missions completed in 1.5 months
Are the default line US CVs any good?
It bugs me that the SBDs dont dive bomb... they are dedicated divebombers!
It’s apparently a nod to the fact that during the battle of Midway the Hornet’s dive bomber crews would often times level out too early
@@weabootrash5891 I can understand that but they still should dive i feel like. Maybe have less aim time compared to other cvs?
@@weabootrash5891 Hornet’s dive bombers never saw the enemy at Midway. They and the fighters went on the infamous “flight to nowhere”.
The dive bombers you are probably thinking about are the ones that flew from Midway itself and they conducted level bombing attacks on the Japanese carriers with awful results to themselves.
Where is Enterprise at? I cant find it in my version of the game!
It was removed from sell because at that moment it was considered OP *which it was not, WG was just trying to cash on players for historical nostalgia*. It is below average CV after all the CV nerfs. You can only get it right now with Christmas Container or Super Container.
I once (in the first minute of the game) gave some guy in a pommern all 5 citadels
Nice to know hornet has enterprise's AP bomb problems too.😁
80th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid April 18th. Tomorrow.
From everything I have read the Devastator was a POS, and the Dauntless was such a great dive bomber that she outlived her replacement the helldiver.
ima guess the Yorktown will be a "support cv"
The Hornet is not as good as Big E, Kaga, or Okachov. But still averaging 80k and 100% win rate. I dropped 27k and 2 fires on a Thunderer last night 🤷♂️
*Cries in Saipan*
Wouldn't it be more logical to have "small" bombs be HE and the "big" ones AP?
Thanks for saving my money.
What you think is better? Hornet or Graf Zeppelin?
Hornet is much more consistent than GZ
12,500 dubs= 49.50$. Ok i love and want this ship, but thats a BIT much. Then again Enterprise was 60 bucks according to my steam account.
I'm actually enjoying Hornet
But is this ship $50 good? Is there fair market value here?
I report all CVs, Subs and Superships every game...even my own teammates.
The B25s are disgusting against destroyers if you hit them with a few bombs
the hornet's b25 is designed to hunt dd... that's probably why you had a bad time with it... seen some other people in youtube using hornet's b25 and they were tearing dd apart with ease like it was paper soaked in water...
Oh yeah. I hunted a hornet with my Neustrashimy but didn't know about the bombs. They hurt so much.
I'm still waiting for prem taihou cv and taihou captain azur lane
22:10 *sad saipan noises*
Shame... I was looking forward to this ship.
To bad the aa guns of the bombers don't work.
Yeah I kind of wanted to get this shit because the historical value but T8 CVs are just garbage because of being up teired
So you can reuse the B-25s? Facepalm.
you're on "algae" medicine? lol... 7:20
Idky people still compare anything to enterprise......... enterprise SUCKS after all the nerfs
WoWs doesn’t like American carriers :(
poor AP?
come on pro player doesnt know hitting lower armor thickness.... in part training u could exploit where best hitting for citadel.... dropping into conning tower + armored that more likely dumb play....
you sound a tad off voice wise.
Bad ship and CV gameplay is stupid anyway. couldnt care less how much WG kills the game anymore.
