    I always wondered why people would use washes and painstakingly paint the cracks when you can just use that color as a base coat and you don't have to worry about accidentally painter over top layers not to mention it only takes seconds to do. Now I think I have figured it out. I have always used a brush to paint. If I used an air brush I couldn't just paint across the low points, they would get filled in.

    Very nice. I'm definitely in the camp of more battle damage but I like mine to look like they have been running from battle to battle. I also love the Crimson Fists so have huge shot wounds or ripped off arms just get me into the game more. Anyways great video and would love to see any video ideas you have. That base is also awesome if you wanted to do a quick video on that.

      Tbh I think the reason I'm so put off lots of battle damage is that it take so long :D I'll definately put together a video on all the bases I do so I can just refer to that one in my videos

    This is amazing scheme, will definitely try it out for my "Ice scars" :p The chest/shoulder/knee symbol is a bone scheme or NMM gold ? How would you emphasize blue on intercessor without the cloth ? Thanks :)

    • @PaintedLegion
      @PaintedLegion  7 місяців тому +1

      Thanks! Those are actually gold but the Matt varnish makes the look more brown/bone colour. The exact paints I used at listed on my insta somewhere, I think on one of the bladeguard posts. I cheat! I sculpt tabards on most of models. I considered doing blue shoulder pads for those without tabards but decided to have fewer colours for some models.

    Probably a daft comment but with making gradients with your airbrush, how do you avoid mistakes when blocking out shapes with black? If/when you do make mistakes, is it a case of just glazing back over them?
    Love the scheme, keep up the good work!

    • @PaintedLegion
      @PaintedLegion  5 місяців тому

      You just have to do your best to be careful. If I do end up making mistakes i'll cover them up with damage and weathering. If its a really bad mistake ill do my best try and colour match it with brush paints and weathering.

    I'm always looking for new ways to paint white armor, constantly adding more angels in armor to a fantasy army and can't have enough good ways to get them looking great, especially fast. I'm going to add these Tamiya paints to my arsenal - have been using their Flat White for a while, brilliant through the airbrush.
    I'm not sure how much the Tamiya pseudo-q-tips cost, but I'm guessing they are not cheap. My go to for oil wash removal are disposable eyeshadow brushes - in the US they run $10 for 200 double sided; they are spongy and leave no material behind when performing an oil wash reduction.

    • @PaintedLegion
      @PaintedLegion  11 місяців тому

      Love the Tamiya paints, they give you a lot of control. That’s interesting, I’ll give those a go and see if they’re better. You’re right the Tamiya q-tips we’re not cheap 😁

    And an excellent tutorial video aswell. (love the little diagrams you drew). How could i not subscribe after that. Really interested to see what you do in the future. 👍🔔
    More close up of finished mini would be great. Or even another 20% zoom on actual vid. (Maybe, idk)

      Thank you! Funnily enough it did occur to me to move the camera closer about a week ago, but I'm still working through a big backlog of recordings so it probably wont show up in the videos for a few weeks yet :D
      I may do grimdark stuff in the future, it's not really something I've tried before in detail and would like to have a go with some streaking grime. But, probably wont be for a little while yet.

      @@PaintedLegion Dont do anything you really don't want to do. Keep doing what you want at your own pace. I'd love to Grimdark my Eldar but know I'd regret it. I did Grimdark a few squads and Terminators of Lamenters. (Sometimes less is more). But until I win the Lotto, my blood soaked, war torn Banshees will remain in pristine Wraithbone.

    • @PaintedLegion
      @PaintedLegion  9 місяців тому

      Let each step dry before going on to the next. Find a stiff old brush that you dont mind ruining to use to stipple the pigment into the base. Don't use too much pigment, it can get messy quickly. Good luck!@@lambda6799

    Pretty sure the grittiness is because of the quality of the paint you're using. If you really want to eliminate it just pick up a better artist grade oil paint.

    • @PaintedLegion

    • @mikeseaton1920

      W&N oils are just fine quality wise. It's because of excess oil in the wash. Spread the paint on some cardboard and let it sit for a few minutes, then take it from there to mix with your white spirits. Once I made that change my oil washes stopped being gritty.

    • @PaintedLegion
      @PaintedLegion  Рік тому +1

      @@mikeseaton1920 I was under the impression W&N were high quality as well. I'll try this, thank you.

      @@PaintedLegion Don't let it sit too long on the cardboard though or it will start getting gritty again.

    • @charlesfe
      @charlesfe Рік тому

      It depends on the paint and how much you thin it down - for a panel wash with oil paint you are really guessing - you want to make something that flows easily and to get that consistency you are highly likely going to get loose pigment on flat areas which appears gritty when dry. This is why enamel liners are very popular, especially in Gunpla - they are pre-thinned to maximum capillary action and no grittiness (at least Mr. Hobby and Tamiya). But, for our purposes we're removing the gritty remnants anyway so it doesn't make much difference.
