- Ngā Iwi E is perhaps the most renowned among composer Hīrini Melbourne's protest songs. Hīrini was a member of activist group Ngā Tamatoa. He composed Ngā Iwi E in 1984 for the Festival of Pacific Arts, originally scheduled to take place in New Caledonia. Festival organisers had distributed music to participating countries, inviting them to contribute lyrics in their respective languages. Unfortunately, due to political instability in New Caledonia, the festival was ultimately cancelled. However, the song crafted by Hīrini for the New Zealand delegation has demonstrated remarkable resilience. Ngā Iwi E passionately calls for unity among the peoples of the Pacific, a cause deeply cherished by Melbourne himself.
This version of the Ngā Iwi E song is performed by the Hono Collective featuring Hikawai Te Nahu and Ms Ava Walker.

Lyrics:
Ngā iwi e, ngā iwi e
Nations, tribes
Kia kotahi rā
Unite as one
Te Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa
(Like) The Pacific Ocean
Ngā iwi e, ngā iwi e
Nations, tribes
Kia kotahi rā
Unite as one
Te Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa
(Like) The Pacific Ocean

To your independence
Me te aroha
And your compassion

Nga iwi e is such a good song more people should listen to it
Um its not about how it sounds it's about thr meaning? Obviously you're not an islander
@@user-rk4gh7hd6q who said I was talking about how it sounds?
@@user-rk4gh7hd6q also I know the meaning behind this song. It was written out of an admiration for the music of diverse peoples, both Maori and Pakeha. And how would you know if I'm an islander or not
@@They.luv.Kaitlyn oh? Since you know so much about māori songs what's the meaning and purpose of haere mai?
@@user-rk4gh7hd6q well haere mai clearly means welcome and the purpose is to greet others, Oh and by the way why are you so aggressive all I said was more people should listen to this waiata and here you are saying somethings that practically don't even RELATE to what I'm saying. AND IT WAS A COMPLIMENT JEEZ, LIKE WHY YOU TAKING IT IN A BAD DIRECTION 💀
