  • This video is possible because of Wallace Pottery sending me their Footer tool for me to review and record. I tried out the Footer trimmer and found it to be an ingenious device which makes quick work of trimming difficult to flip narrow necked bottles and vases! It has a purpose and serves it nicely. I have always made chucks for forms like this, but I really like the style of the Footer to accommodate many forms. I am using Laguna B Mix cone 5-6 for these bottles, throwing on my Skutt classic wheel using my Giffin Grip Mini.

I made this video for my Ceramics II, III, and independent studyI students at Mason High School. I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 35 years, and I have been teaching for over 33 years, over the past 27 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics.
I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my UA-cam channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

I've been mildly curious about this chuck since it seems to pop up in a lot of social media. The instant centering would be nice because I make a lot of closed forms and trim them on a variety of bisqued chucks I have thrown....it's just that centering consumes time. Thank you for the review!

    Great tool but pricey.

Thank so much for this great video, think I will try one. Now I have a strange question. When you make those oil bottles, do you know what the wet measurement is for the top. Do you have something that you fit into the top to get consistent openings for the spouts. Thanks

Great question!! Actually, I just got these new pour spouts- so those bottles are my first experiment! I was trying to gauge the opening with a couple different sizes/measurements - to experiment and see which fit best after firing! Once I have the magic number - I plan on making a wooden gauge to help me in the future keep them consistent!!

Might I suggest you get yourself a small level?

Hi Sharon- I do have levels- just don’t find them necessarily helpful for this process! 😊

Just a small bubble level you use before placing down the clay lugs. This chuck was already centered so you would only need to check horizontal leveling. @@KaransPotsAndGlass
