Have been looking for a poncho pattern to make for myself and a few other female friends and family members. I came upon this one and I have found the one that I will be using. I love the look and the simplicity of it. The use of different colors will give each poncho its individuality. Your tutorial was extremely easy to follow and I am so glad I stumbled upon this pattern. Thank you so much.
I found that putting a stitch marker at your chain one will help you keep your edges straight. I was notorious for crooked blankets , BUT NO LONGER! HUZZAH!
This looks like the perfect pattern for this yarn. I made a scarf with the mandala and only had a couple of colors in it! I love the look of the poncho.
I am falling in love with this poncho! But I hope you don't mind me giving some tips that helped me make it🙂. It took me 3 tries to finally master it, and that is because the last few times, I dropped a few stitches, and I am not too sure why. Half double crochets, an easy stitch, an easy stitch for many, but for this girl, I know how to do a HDC stitch, but I don't know what happened when I got to the hood part, and one side had less stitches than the other. So, this is what I did to make sure everything was even. Before I would start a new row, I would count 10 stitches in and place a stitch marker inside that 10th stitch. I would continue to do this until I reached the end. When I had 10 stitches left, that is when I knew I was right on track. Also, if you don't have this beautiful multi-colored yarn this sweet lady that did the video for this poncho, and you want to change yarn color. To keep my knots from coming undone, I added a dot of Aleene's clear fabric glue to them. Meaning, you would do the first step as if you were tying your shoe, then add the dot of glue, then tie it in a knot. None of my knots came out, and then when I did the boarder around the poncho, I knew that they were extra secured. PS, I used a 4-ply yarn since it's winter, but I am planning on making a summer one with the yarn that was used in this video. So, thank you so much sweet Lucky Platypus lady for sharing this pattern with us, and I hope you were ok with me sharing some tips that helped me be able to make this beautiful poncho🙂. Happy Holidays to you😊!
Great tip. Wish I had read this before starting. I found myself many stitches out at hood making time even though everything looked even. I have gone with the 40 stitches for the hood hole and divided the other sides by two,
Your channel seems amazing! I am making this right now and I'm only starting my back rows so I have a lot left. I don't have any light yarn so I used medium and so far it seems like a great blanket poncho to chill with at home. Hopefully I will find out how to make a pocket to make it extra good to wear at home when sick and needing a small pack of tissues. I will probably manage to mess my poncho up because I'm a beginner and honestly not the brightest but I'm so excited about it so far, thank you! UA-cam is amazing, an australian woman helping me, a swede, make anything wearable for the first time in my life.
That makes me so happy. 😊 Enjoy the journey. You will learn so much as you trial new things and experiment. Don't be shy to experiment. Happy crocheting 💖
Hi, I came across this tutorial when I opened UA-cam. It is beautiful. I just ordered 4 skeins of Mandala Warlock and 6 skeins of Mandala baby sparkle Nova. I am glad to subscribe to your channel and I love everything I see!!❣️❣️ Thank you! LeeAnne
I just found your tutorial ...what caught my eye was the platypus...I've been in Tasmania for 7 years and the accent gosh I love it...by the way your poncho is fabulous...I hope to find mandala yarn here in Italy 🇮🇹...thank you 😊
I want to make this using my #5 chunky yarn, as I would like it to be a little HD heavier for sitting in front of the fire pit this fall. Any suggestions on adjusting? Also, the dimensions in inches would be helpful. Thanks
The measurements should be the same but the number of stitches will be less. You will need to Google the conversion as I have no idea in inches (I'm a metrics girl 🙂)
I'm making it with #5 chunky also because thats what I have enough of on hand. I started out with hdc but with the #5 yarn it was to thick so I'm now making it using double crochet. I crochet 6 sts times 10 rows and it came to 5 inches, So I adjusted the directions to 8 rows (instead of 10) DC for the same 5 inches. Hope this helps someone.
Love this! Beautiful work! I want to make this for my daughter using thicker yarn; can you advise how to I can follow this pattern but scale it down to a 2 year old size?
Measure the length and width of your daughter and do the start chain to the width and the amount of rows to the length you measured. Keep double checking as you work up to make sure fits. Hope that makes sense.
Thank you for sharing! I want to make this for my partner. He’s 6’5” and about 200 lb. Do you have suggestions on how much wider and longer I need to go?
Do you chain as wide as your husband is and work your back panel to the length he likes and repeat the same for the front panel. Hope that makes sense.
I have another question… I’ve been working on my poncho but I’m not sure I got the measurements right (I did start with a chain of 120 but it seems far too wide and too short). Could you tell me the measurements of your finished poncho (length and especially width)? That would be so helpful! Thank you!
I have sold these ponchos now so don't have one to measure at the moment. But roughly, for me who is 5ft7 and size 14 (Australian size) about 100cm wide and 130cm long with it going past my knees and arms to my wrists. Hope that helps.
Love this and love when I come across an Aussie on here doing tutes...Q though...do us Aussies do a decent yarn at all, cause American yarn, delightful as it is, can be FO pricey. I buy online from Craft2U cause they tend to have a better range than spotlight.
Thank you.❤️ Our decent yarns are way too expensive here on Aus. I only buy from spotlight and lincraft when on sale and I spin my own yarn (which I therefore get lovely yarn if I do say so myself😊) Otherwise I buy from Hobium in Turkey as cheaper, nice range and free postage when you spend x amount.
@@luckyplatypus Spinning your own is ideal! I've not bought from hobium, though I like Ice Yarns and Hobbii, though Hobbii takes forever to get here lol I look forward to making this poncho when the weather isn't being so Darwin wet season...even though I'm far from Darwin these days lol
I'm about halfway through the poncho at the moment. It's a great design! However, I'm going to be way short on the length. I'm using exactly the same yarn and a 5.5mm hook and I don't crochet tight, but I've done 67 rows and it's only down to my waist!! I'm gonna have to do probably 90(?) rows to get to thigh level. Are you a very loose crocheter?
I love your poncho and just bought mandala yarn. I was wondering why it’s important to crochet into the back of the loop? Why does it matter whether it’s the front or the back? Is this a special stitch? Would it look differently if using the front loop? I’ve only just started crocheting so I’m not experienced.
Hi there, glad you like the poncho 😁. The way you do your stitch will also affect the way it looks therefore it is important to follow the pattern and when it says front post you do it front post or back post you do a back post and it makes it go in or out. Same with going into the back of the loop which will create what we call rib stitch and the front of the loop will have a different opposite effect. Hope that makes sense. As I always say experiment, experiment, experiment and that's the way we learn😉. Have fun 🤩

Just discovered this tutorial. It's exactly what I need because my husband has always jokingly said he wants me to crochet a poncho (with a hood) every time we watch Emperor's New Groove with our daughter. (There's a crochet joke.) What stitch count would you recommend for starting a poncho for a man who is 6'2 ft and a size XXL?
I would suggest do a chain that measures from one of his arms, behind his neck and down the other arm. Then work as many rows to be as long as his body and the length he would like. Then repeat that length on the other side.☺️ Hope that helps and makes sense.
If you need it smaller width ways do less stitches across, or do more stitches across if you need wider. If you want longer do more rows down. If you want shorter do less rows. But remember to do the same amount of rows on either side (front and back). Take your width and length measurements and use that as a guide. Hope that helps.
Ok u chain 120 every 10 u mark. Now the 40 and mark next and count another 40 and mark. I’m lost here because that’s 80-81 now you say it’s 40 left. Where are u at I’m lost on that part
To make the hole for the neck..... you count 40 stitches and put a stitch markers. It can be the 40th or 41st stitch, up to you. I put at the 41st. From the other end count 40 stitches and put a stitch markers the same as you did before. I do it at the 41st stitch. This will now mean in the middle you have, including the marked stitches, 40 stitches remaining. 40 for the shoulder, 40 for the neck, 40 for the other shoulder, total of 120 stitches. Hope that helps and makes sense.

Sure can. You will end up with a much thicker and heavier poncho but it will be lovely and snuggly and cosy.
Can you use single crochet?
Sure can. It will be a lot tighter, use more yarn and be heavier (and take longer to make) but will be very snuggly, cosy and warm.
