    5:30 it's a Gmin11 (flat 3, flat 7). High vocal is on the 11.

      I was thinking the same thing. A Gm11. 6 part harmony…in a soft rock song. Even the Carpenters didn’t do more than 5 parts. Love it!

    You can thank the great Peter Jones who played keyboards on this track as a hired session player. Even though Graeham Goble wrote this song. It was Peter who gave this song it’s cool Jazz sensibility. A very respected Jazz pianist and arranger in Melbourne Australia at the time.

    Hey Chris, if you were a teenager when Reminiscing was released in '78, well so was I, but I have to say that you look way younger than I do now!!
    This is a great song to play on keyboards, I used to play it a lot in the 1980s on the old piano that my parents had. Like you I played by chords. I found a great book titled something like "4400 chords for guitar" and learned all of the fancy jazz chords from that. In Reminiscing I used vanilla Gm9 instead of Gm9(maj7) for "I can hardly wait", I never picked up on that nuance until I heard you just now, had to go back to the original LRB version to check. Otherwise was pretty much identical -- great minds think alike haha. Anyway, many thanks for uploading, certainly brought back a lot of adolescent memories!! Please take care and stay safe.

    First off, Chris… I love what you’ve done here. It’s very expansive, especially the part about the nostalgia note. I play this on guitar and the progression matches precisely to what you are clarifying for us all. The one thing I’d disagree on is that to even suggest this is your typical “pop” tune does nobody any good, even if it’s said tongue-in-Cheek. It is one of the most miraculous progressive songs, created by one of the most profound bands to ever tour the world in the late half of the 20th Century! Also, to neglect the mention of the fabulous harmonies, sung with an amazing blend is a BIG mistake. I can’t go to anyone but The Beach Boys to find anything better from that period. Alas, I think those were things that slipped your mind when bringing us an accurate vision of this incredible harmonic wonder. Great job, Chris! …g

    • @chrisdurhammusicchannel

      Thanks, George!!!! When I made this video, I was just interested in the harmonic progression, and I got some stuff wrong. (Check the pinned comment, Matt corrected me.) I think it would be interesting for a vocalist to make a video on the amazing vocal harmonies in this song. I am not qualified to make that video! This song is too amazing for any one video to be "comprehensive."

      @@chrisdurhammusicchannel Thanks, Chris… I hope you didn’t take my comments too to heart. I just reread them and I’m ashamed of myself. You have my deepest respect for even tackling this tune! When such masterpieces come around, once every blue moon, I love to analyze them. I am a big fan of jazz mannerisms in rock and pop music. This one fits the bill to the tee. Again, kudos to taking the time to acknowledge this one, and for sharing your excellent findings with the rest of us! …g

    New subscriber. I heard this song recently and tried humming along and guessing the changes.. boy do I have some work to do. I need to get serious about ear training. Thank you so much for laying out the changes along with insightful analysis! When working on harmonically interesting or challenging tunes, do you write out the changes or can you hear your way through them? I’d be interested in hearing about your process!

    • @chrisdurhammusicchannel
      @chrisdurhammusicchannel  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks for watching the video!!! I usually write out the changes because I have a lousy memory and I'm easily distracted. My process usually involves learning a song, working on 3 or 4 different songs, suddenly remembering I was working on the first song, learning it again and writing it down! I wish I could hear the chords perfectly on the first listen, but I really need a few times to get the song in my head. To a certain extent, I like to hear exactly what the form of the song is before I even start to write it down. It helps when improvising to see a well constructed "map" of the changes and form. Not sure if I've answered your question, let me know if I haven't.

      @@chrisdurhammusicchannel I love songs with harmonically rich changes. I’ve been working on capturing the feel and stylistic elements of pop tunes from the 70s. I sometimes find myself battling with overdoing the jazz harmony super imposition in pop tunes. I had it hammered in my head to always use fully defined chord forms (3rds and 7ths) and only if melody dictates, sus4ths.. this is a weakness I’m working on along with fully embracing slash chords. The songs from the 70s provide a vast library of tunes to analyze, reharmonize, and just enjoy. Would love to see your analysis on Steely Dans Haitian Divorce! Keep the videos coming!

      @@Guit7Jazz I've been studying and playing jazz for about 45 years, so part of it is a lifetime of study, but one of the best books for understanding jazz is Mark Levine's "The Jazz Piano Book." Mostly just listening to players you like and transcribing their music will help. If you transcribe the chords that Earl Hines or Teddy Wilson used and compare them to what Chick Corea might play on the same song, you can start to build your own style/voice as a jazz musician. I don't know if this advice helps, but just play everything you can and listen to everything you can. Reharmonization specific books may exist, but anything I learned was in the course of music college and listening.
